Dear Diary, today 49 of us enter- ed the ever familiar doors of the Decatur High School to begin our final year of high school education. We organized our schedules and planned for the Friday night football dance. Oct. 2. Dear Diary, we had our Hrst class meeting this afternoon. We elected officers and a class psonsor. Sponsor-Miss Vera President-Marilyn Kirchenbauer Vice-president-Bob Baker Secretary-Carolyn McDougal Treasurer-Don Aurand Nov. 20. Dear Diary, we've set a record! During this Whole month We've worked hard on the Student Day Sale, and today We had a report that 129 merchants are participating. This is the highest ever. Dec. 24. Dear Diary, today was the last day of school preceding our Christmas vaca- tion. We sang carols and made arrangements for transportation to Alexandria for the holi- day tourney. Jan. 10. Dear Diary, our class is planning some visits to the Courthouse in order to be- come more familiar with the county offices. We were invited to the Courthouse today to see a naturalization ceremony. Feb. 6. Dear Diary, today our class voted on invitations. We chose a very neat one with an etching of the school on it. March 19. Dear Diary, tonight the senior girls won the girls basketball tourney. After the game We had revue practice. April 2. Dear Diary. we gave the final performance of our spring revue last night. We had reports that Steppin' Out was the best revue ever given. May 14. Dear Diary, tonight we attended The Prom. We were all greatly surprised by the clever decorations, Tonight is a night We shall never forget. May 23. Dear Diary, tonight we were honored at Baccalaureate Services. May 27. Dear Diary, this is it! Tonight we are going to graduate from Decatur High School. We are all very proud to say that we were members of the D.H.S. student body. M. Dear Diary, can you believe it '?-We're actually juniors! Now we're in! Things are almost the same at school this year. We have a few new teachers. Nov. 1. Dear Diary, we elected officers today. I'm sure they'll do a fine job. Our president de- cided at the end of the first semester that he would try his luck at something else, so our capable vice- president took over his duties. Nov. 20. Dear Diary, we're very well repre- sented on the football and basketball teams. We haven't been winning many games, but you wait, dear Diary, we'1l go! Oh! I almost forgot to tell you -we're going to sponsor the first dance of the basketball season. Dec. 24. Dear Diary, today, while Miss Hau- bold played the organ, we all sang Christmas carols. You know, dear Diary, I think that is one of the nicest traditions we have here at D.H.S. After we finished singing, Mr. Andrews wished us all a Merry Christmas and we were off! Feb. 2. Dear Diary, you know, the highlight of the second semester is the Prom. We have some real good ideas. I'm sure that with all the kids helping, plus Miss Weidler and Miss Kauff- man, we'll have the best Prom ever! Feb. 11. Dear Diary, another big event is the spring revue. This year the name of it is Steppin' Out. We're working very hard at it. I wish you could see it, dear Diary, I'm sure you'd like it. And so, dear Diary, until next year-goodby. S. Dear Diary, with only two letter- men returning from last year's team Coach Worthman's job of rebuilding the team has been a tough one. Tonight the Jackets opened their '53-'54 basketball season by taking a home stand against the Geneva Cardinals, but we came out on the short end of a 76 to 52 score. Dec. 5. Dear Diary, the Jackets have had tough luck on their past two gamesg we lost to Bluffton by a 48 to 86 score and then were dropped by Concordia 64 to 44. Dec. 8. Dear Diary, tonight the Jackets got their initial win of the season by defeating the Berne Bears 59 to 51. The Jackets took the lead in the first quarter and held it throughout the game. Dec. 24. Dear Diary, the Jackets continued to have tough luck after winning over Berne by dropping three games-the first to the undefeated South Side Archers, next an over-time battle with Warsaw, 46 to 42, and the third a conference game with Colum- bia City. Dec. 26. Dear Diary, today the Jackets took third place in the Alexandria tourney. We dropped the first game to Alexandria 54 to 34, but won the consolation game by defeating Bluffton 55 to 52. Jan. 8. Dear Diary, tonight the Jackets showed their ever-constant fight and spirit, but were dropped in a close game with Fort Wavne Central Catholic 47 to 45. Central Catholic won in the final seconds ofthe game. Jan, 20. Dear Diary, the Jackets ran into another losing streak in the past three games. Dear Diary, tonight the Jackets, showing plenty of improvement over the start of the season, played by far their finest game of the season so far and dropped Kendallville in a closely contested game, 67 to 64. Feb. 12. Dear Diary, the Jackets, still play- ing good heads-up basketball lost another three games. In the first game the Jackets were edged out in the final seconds by the Bluffton Tigers, 55 to 54. We were defeated by the New Haven Bulldogs 51 to 41. and by Portland, 76 to 46. Feb. 19. Dear Diary, in the final two games of the regular season, the Jackets won the first by a 71 to 44 score over Winchester and lost the final one to Garrett. 58 to 48. Feb. 27. Dear Diary, the Jackets went into the Decatur Sectional to win the first game from the Hartford Gorillas by a score of 66 to 50 in an afternoon game. That night the Jackets played their best game of the season and upset the Geneva Cardinals, the Sec- tional favorite, with a score of 59 to 49. The Jackets drew first blood in this game and were never headed: they played with the fine team spirit known to the Decatur teams. We placed second in a meet with Pleasant Mills and Monmouth, lost to Concordia and New Haven, and took third places in triangular meets with Hun- tington and Lafontaine, Portland and Win- chester, Bluffton and Columbia City.
