Miss Kauffman, our sponsor, advises the officers β Sam Gilbert, Sally Ahr, Merlin Johnston β and our class of 39, with our many activities. During the year we have been very busy. To start off with a bang, we drew and paint- ed the pictures on the window at Christmas, sponsored a Valentine Dance, made the tour- ney signs, and at the present, we are work- ing on the posters for the Poppy Contest. Being introduced into our school this year for the first time, is the Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio Art Alliance Contest. We have three students participating in the contest. These drawings will be judged here and the winner, with the winning picture, will be sent to Fort Wayne. Future Artists! Have fun and join our club. 36 Economics The Home Economics Club was re-organ- ized the first week of school under the super- vision of Miss Steller. The first activity of the club was to sell hot dogs, popcorn, pop, and cofi ' ee to the foot- ball fans on those chilly evenings at Worth- man Field. Several banquets were served during the year by the more enthusiastic members. A few of the banquets were a teachers ' ban- quet, band banquet, football banquet, and the F. F. A. father and son banquet. Our first engagement was the Ju- nior Town Meeting of Radio Station WOWO. We met with Rock-Creek High School of Wells County. The top- ic was Is Teen-age Chivalry Dead? George Bair and Helen Mowery were our speakers. They made a fine show- ing. Next, we had our elimination con- test for the Legion Oratorical Contest in which Marilyn Hoblet won with her convincing speech. Ann Deitsch was named alternate. Others in the contest were George Bair, SaralynSu Braden, Marjorielu Hill, Helen Mowery, Mary Anne Owens, lona Smitley, and Grover Odle. Harriet Gerber was the chair- man for the event. Marjorielu Hill, Harriet Gerber, Mary Anne Owens, and SaralynSu Braden spoke before the Dramatic Sec- tion of the Woman ' s Club on the topic, Is Teen-age Chivalry Dead? lona Smitley served as chairman. Others in the speech class are Nan- cy Callow, Betty Johnson, Bob Lane, and Curtis Jones. Another event of the year was the participation of the speech class in a Junior Town Meeting with the Fort Wayne Central High School. The Rotary Discussion Contest be- fore the Decatur Club was an out- standing event. Those taking part were George Bair, Su Braden, Mary Anne Owens, and Marjorielu Hill. Marjorielu Hill won first place and was placed third in the Zone Contest. Speech class has been a lot of hard work, but we of the class will never forget our year with Mr. Dorwin. The Commercial Club, open to all students who have at least two years ' work in the commercial department, was organized again this year. The following officers were elected at the first meeting: Agnes Werst, president; Amy Lou Reynolds, vice-president: Dick Winteregg, secretary; SaralynSu Braden, treasurer. Our most interesting project of th e year was issuing the Gab Fest. For the first time in its history the front page, back page, and cartoons were done in color. This fact, combined with the co-operation of the Commercial Club and our supervisor, Mr. Hetrick, made this issue of the Gab Fest a great i-uccess. History was also repeated by our Commercial Club. A plan, used several years ago, enabling pupils to earn typing award pins was revived. All club members who were able to write fifty words per minute, sixty words per minute, or seventy words per min- ute with a minimum of five errors were given one of these awards. We were proud to see our supply of pins disappear fast. The Commercial Club sponsored a very interesting assembly program, The Holland Company. These ac- tivities and many more helped to make this year a most enjoyable year for our Commercial Club. Top right: Working on the Gabfest. The Choir has sung for numerous activities during the school year. The first appearance was the annual concert in November, during the open house for parents. The second ap- pearance was the program during Spiritual Emphasis Week. Appearances to the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and our Christ- mas Play were the pre-Christmas activities. The Operetta Jewels of the Desert, Bacca- laureate, and Commencement are programs yet to come. The choir sponsored a dance and two won- derful assembly programs. The programs were the group from the Cincinnati Con- servatory of Music, and the Singing Hoosiers from Indiana University. The officers elected this year were Jack Petrie, President; George Bair, Vice-Presi- dent; Harriet Gerber, Secretary, and Bonnie Simons, Treasurer. Much praise and many thanks go to Car- ol Elzey, the Choir ' s able accompanist. Although many seniors will vacate their places, we are sure the underclassmen will fill in and strive to make the Choir next year as fine as it was this year. H. S. is going to seem rather empty next year when our very able and tal- ented director retires. We are certainly go- ing to miss Sell. We will never forget the many favors he has done for us, the patience he has had with us, and the many dimes he has passed out to us at the games and pa- rades. Our activities this year were a lot of fun, especially one. Our band visited Indiana Uni- versity and participated in one of the larg- est band parades ever held with 5,500 musi- cians participating. This group was made up of 112 high school bands. Believe me, that was an experience we shall never forget, and it was a beautiful spectacle to see. We felt very sad because Mr. Sellemeyer was not able to go with us due to his illness. Nevertheless, Lois White did a fine job of keeping order. We are proud of Lois, Pat, and Carol for their fine perform- ances. Our drum corps gave a fine showing at the Sectional Tournament. The Band gave a surprise party for Sell this year and Jacquie Hite, our president, presented him with an engraved plaque as ? gift of our appreciation to him. The Jackets threatened the Tigers in the fourth quarter, but their threats were turned into the first defeat of the season. In the following game the Jackets traveled to Auburn. The Red Devils, having a definite size advantage, beat the Jackets 27-6. The Jackets marked up their first victory of the season against the Garrett Railroad- ers. Coach Bob Worthman and his Jackets proved they were not going to quit. In the next game, matching the Jackets with Port- land, Coach Worthman inspired in his boys confidence and the necessary fight to play a good game even though the Jackets were defeated 13-7. Decatur ran into some tough teams the next two games and lost to New Haven by a score of 27-0. Then traveling to Warsaw, they were handed another harsh defeat. Even though the Jackets were small and inexperienced, they proved again their de- termination bestowed upon them by Coach Worthman. They fell just short of defeating Columbia City. Doing even better in the next game, they gave the tough Hartford City eleven all they wanted. Although the Jackets were beater by a score of 27-13, they played their best game of the year. They demonstrated tn - passing and running offense splendidly an- proved to have a strong defense as well. They carried this spirit and fight with them against Concordia of Fort Wayne, but again proved to be just short of victory. Next came Central of Fort Wayne and old man winter. It rained, snowed, and hailed; yet the game went on. The fans were few, so few you could count them on the fingers of your two hands. Gradually, the fans became daring and they drove their cars up to the fence surrounding the field to watch the game from there. The Jackets having their poorest season as far as scores go, provided many thrills for the fans. They showed a never-dying spirit for which Coach Worthman and his teams are known. The season ' s record is as follows: Bluffton 12, Decatur 6. Auburn 27, Decatur 6. Decatur 12, Garrett 7. Portland 13, Decatur 7. New Haven 27, Decatur 0. Warsaw 34, Decatur 7. Columbia City 12, Decatur 6. Hartford City 27, Decatur 13. Fort Wayne Concordia 15, Decatur 7. Fort Wayne Central 25, Decatur 0. 59 The champions of three consecutive Sec- tional crowns have set a new record in Sec- tional standings. The previous record was two Sectional championships in a row. This was followed by a victorious first ,same of the Regional. The Jackets defeated kendallville in the afternoon game, 78 to 65, but they were defeated by Auburn in the second half of the evening game. Bob Worthman ' s hopes were high the en- tire season, for he had an experienced squad of six men. These were: Bair, Bohnke, Moses, Petrie, Sautbine, and Strickler, all lettermen of 1950, returning to play some of the best basketball of their careers. Yet this was not the only reason for Bob ' s confidence. In this year ' s team he had the mental attitude he had been working to de- velop for three years. This was the attitude to work and play together to the best of their ability as a team of ten boys and not as one boy. This feeling of co-operation and sincerity was first in each player ' s mind, and the play- er thought of himself last. In the dressing room after one game, the comment was made, You didn ' t get many points tonight. The answer was, I didn ' t get many points but I helped win. The boys practiced together and worked hard, individually and as a group. As a re- sult when the team won, all ten boys felt that they had won. When we lost, all ten shared the defeat. At a basketball meeting Mr. Brown made this comment, You boys must love each other like brothers on the basketball floor and leave your personal differences at home. ' This was the spirit and feeling with which every boy played. The team as a group set many scoring rec- ords for future teams to work for. Through- out the entire Sectional the team scored more than sixty points in each game. Then moving to the Regional, they still remained above sixty by setting an all-time Ft. Wayne Regional team scoring record of 78 to Ken- dallville ' s 65. Not to be let down the team Row 1: Vic Strickler Row 2: Les Sautbine, George Bair, E wight Sheets Row 3: Gary Erekson, Harold Bohnke, Roger Fru ' hte Row 4: Jack Petrie, Jim Moses, Gene Morrison 60 scored 61 to Auburn ' s 76 in the final game of this season. To let you know how Bob felt about the team, here are some of his comments. At Ft. Wayne Bob was asked who his starting five were, and this is his answer. I have no start- ing five; my team is built around ten fine athletes. The boys, being very nervous about the Sectional games, were told this by Mr. Dor- win: No matter what happens today the sun will rise tomorrow. Thanks to comments like these and bril- liant coaching and the correct attitude, the team established many basketball records, and developed a good sportsmanlike attitude never to be forgotten. The weatherman, as usual, is causing Mr. Dorwin and his team a lot of worry this year. As yet, the team has not been snowed out. In fact, they have had fairly good base- ball weather. The Jackets lost the first game of the season to Berne, but they came roaring back to defeat Woodburn. The third game of the season sent the Jackets to Bluffton for their first N.E.I.C. baseball game of the season. The Jackets came home victorious from their first N.E.I.C. game. Mr. Dorwin and his baseball teams are well known in the Northeastern Indiana Conference. They have won the N.E.I.C. championship 10 out of 13 times since 1938. During the other three years the champion- ships were won by Kendallville, Warsaw, and Hartford City. Coach Dorwin and his team are striving to bring home another N.E.I.C. championship this year. The lettermen returning this year are Petrie, Pollock, Busse, Sautbine, Strickler, and Bohnke. Moses, another letterman of last year, is on the track team. Other squad members are named under the picture. Mr. Dorwin has arranged a good schedule with the following teams: Berne (2) , Wood- burn (2), Bluffton (2) (N.EJ.C), Geneva (1), Marion (2), Willshire (2), New Haven (N.E.I.C), and Warsaw (N.E.I.C.) 64 f iM Coach: Deane Dorwin Row 1: Kneeling β Don Aurand, Tony Custer, Jim Carter, Bob Baker, Gary Simons, Jim Raw ley, Roger Blackburn, Phil Krick, Jim Engle, Bob Lobsiger, Don Lehman, Roger Pollock, Allen Cole, Paul An- drews, Larry Hutker, Dick Gaskill, Jim Nelson, Merlin Johnston. Track Forty-seven hopefuls answered the call of Coach Bob Worthman and Assistant Coach Harry Dailey when track season opened. Of the 47 hopefuls only five were lettermen. These were B. Doan (mile) ; G. Bair (shot put) ; and D. Winteregg, D. Sheets, and R. Fruchte, dashes. These boys formed the nu- cleus of the team. Along with these were a few underclassmen who formed the rest of the team that carried the banner for D. H. S. this year. This year ' s schedule thus far: Victories Bluffton (Dual Meet) Huntington, Hartford City (Triangular Meet) 66 Portland (Dual Meet) County Meet South Side (Fresh.-Soph.) Defeats Central (Dual Meet) Columbia City (Dual Meet) Central, Central Catholic (Triangular Meet) Bluffton, Columbia City (Fresh.-Soph.) The boys are now looking forward to the Sectional which is to be held at the South Side track in Fort Wayne in the near future. Next year Mr. Worthman and Mr. Dailey are going to have a year of rebuilding, but they should have a good season since a group of promising trackmen are returning. Country The 1950 cross-country season has gone into history, but its record was good for the compe- tition afforded. They had only a few meets, but their record was impressive in every one. The record is as follows: Victories Central Catholic North Side (Fresh.-Soph.) Losses South Side Kendallville Coaches: Harry Dailey, Bob vVnrthinan By losing to Kendallville, the ' 50 team thereby lost the N. E. I. C. crown too, since they were the only two teams fielding cross- country teams in the conference. The boys getting letters this year were: Dick Winteregg, Bob Brennan, and David Owens β seniors; Kent Koons, Don Reinking, Jerry Carter, and Ronnie Secaur β soph- omores, and Dick Gaskill and Harold Norris β freshmen. With a lai-ge group of returning letter- men. Coach Dailey should have no trouble in producing a good team next year. Qirls Athletics While reading about athletics, we come again to the section on girls ' sports. This year, as usual, Miss Walters, the girls ' instructor, kept us busy with games such as kickball, deck tennis, volleyball, and, of course, calisthen- ics with their rhythmic ups and downs. The favorite sport, however, is basketball. Each year, as the basketball season begins, the girls in each class form teams and battle back and forth during the season. At the end of the season, a class tourney is held. For the second year the girls of the class of ' 51 won the tourney, V A ' X 1 Girls ' Athletic Director: Miss Rebecca Walters 68 defeating the juniors in the first game and the sophomores in the final. Now that spring is here, the class- es will be going to Worthman Field or Lincoln playground for softball which is entered into with as much enthusiasm and interest as any of the other sports. Fur- nishing the nucleus of this year ' s team were: Hancher, McDougal, Eley, Dull, and Neireiter. Others came along towards the end of the cam- paign; these are going to be the backbone of next year ' s team. These were: D. Strickler and Roger Strickler. Each year the City series is the feature attrac- tion. This year it was no different. Although it proved very disappointing in the first game, (we lost it by the score of 50-30) they came back strong to win the next two games in great fashion, 32- 24 and 24-20. Next year ' s team will have a high goal to reach if they expect to do as well as this year ' s team.
