With this 13-6 triumph over Bluffton, the arch rival of the Jackets in all sports, Deca- tur avenged five years of football defeat from B]uffton s Tigers. The hard-charging Auburn Red Devils, de- termined to reverse last year ' s set-back at the hands of the Jackets, did just that with a 26-0 victory. Decatur lost the capable serv- ices of halfback Jerry Gehrig, who sustained a broken leg in the Auburn tussle. Central ' s mighty Tigers were the Jackets ' next foe; they proved to be a little too elusive for the hometown boys. At half-time the score was Central 6, Decatur 0. The last stanza proved that reserve strength counts, and the Tigers pushed over two more touch- downs but were stopped cold on both extra point attempts. Convinced they could better their 1-2 standing, the Jackets moved to meet the Garrett Railroaders. The game put togeth- er two teams very evenly matched in size, but Decatur definitely had the edge in abil- ity. This 13-6 victory proved the Jackets could come back from defeat to the victory column. Concordia ' s Cadets, certainly one of the largest teams the Jackets met all year, were sent back to Fort Wayne with a 6-0 defeat. Again spirit proved the winning factor in this victory. Every year seems to have a heartbreaker; our game at Portland was certainly it this year. After marching all over Portland ' s Panthers the first half and gaining a 6-0 lead, the Portland team came to life for two vital plays. The first play after the kickoff netted the Panthers a 60-yard touchdown and the next play the extra point which ultimately won the game. Staving off a Jacket rally in the final minutes, Portland won 7-6. A safety proved the deciding margin in the New Haven game with the Yellow Jack- ets bringing home their last victory of the year 9-6. The Eagles of Columbia City, another pow- er house on the grid iron, gave the Jackets the worst trouncing of the season, 45-0. Al- though the Decatur lads played hard all the the way, it just wasn ' t their night. In the season ' s final battle the Jackets moved to Hartford City to engage the Aire- dales, only to be turned back 12-0. Although defeated in their final effort of the season, the Decatur Yellow Jackets football team played well and hard all year. Their con- ference record was three won and three lost. In closing the 1950 season the team would like to wish the team of 1951 a very success- ful season. l 0f i  = .. --v - ix-4 ,n %A ffmd£fflifffi C3 : ' i 0 A MA. 4i ir Mfy£ s m w . •• ' aiffW Front row: Lester Sautbine, Jim Moses. Seventy boys reported for basketball at the season ' s opening: fifty boys from the freshman and sophomore classes and 20 upperclassmen comprised this group. The lack of returning lettermen was quite a problem to solve, but through hard work and using the three returning lettermen — Bnhnke, Bair, Strickler — as a nucleus the ' 49- ' 50 team was formed. Naturally it was necessary to cut the squad, regardless of how many boys were disappointed. Thirty-four of the seventy boys were kept to compose the Freshman, Second and First teams. The varsity, composed of many underclassmen, compiled a splendid season ' s record of 12 games won and 8 lost. USaSeoall Our baseball team was met with un- usually bad weather this year. The day of a game Mr. Dorwin would say, We will have a game today provided that it doesn ' t rain, hail, snow, or freeze us out. The Jackets, winning the N.E.I.C. title last year, are looking forward to protecting the championship this year. The team will try to uphold its record of nine champion- ships out of eleven attempts for the N.E.I.C. title. However, the Jackets will have diffi- culty improving last year ' s record of 13 vic- tories and one defeat. Although being hard hit by the graduation of six regulars, Mr. Dorwin is rebuilding the team and giving them the fighting spirit which he has so capably instilled in the past seasons. Other boys who made the squad are shown and named in the picture. A good schedule has been arranged with the fol- lowing teams: Geneva, Berne (2), Anderson (2), Bluff- ton (N.E.I.C), Marion (2), New Haven (N.E.I.C), Warsaw (N.E.I.C.) and Huntington. The games that have been played have given the Jackets a 50-50 aver- age. They split a double header with Anderson, iost to Geneva, and defeated Berne. 45 Jv ' ack avid Coach Bob Worthman and Assistant Coach Harry Dailey issued the annual call for track men and 57 aspirants reported. Of the 57 prospects who reported 9 were lettermen from last year. These boys were: Roger Johnson, Dan Mills, Rich- ard Peterson, Dick Johnson, George Bair, Dick Winteregg, Marvin Stucky, Jerry Gehrig, and Bob Doan. Roger Johnson and Dan Mills are the four-year lettermen on the year ' s squad. Roger Johnson was the defending N.E.I.C. Conference champion in the half mile. The Jackets track squad placed sixth at the Goashea Relays out of a field of 23 teams. The Decatur lads placed 6th in the N.E.I.C. Meet with Roger Johnson winning the 440 yard dash. Dan Mills placing second in the 100 yd. dash and Bob Doan finishmg 4th in the mile run. This Year ' s Schedule Decatur, Berne and Bluffton 1st. They defeated Garrett, Fort Wayne Central, Fort Wayne Central Catholic, Angola, and COACHES: Harry Daile ovin u i Union Township. Decatur vi as defeated twice during its regular schedule. The defeats came from two very good teams — South Side of Fort Wayne and Kendallville. Decatur lost the N.E.I.C. meet to Kendallville by one lone point. They were not discouraged for they placed fifth of the ten teams entered in the Sectional at Fort Wayne. They were paced by Roger Johnson, their captain. Roger, a four-year letterman, won top honors in the N.E.I.C. meet and the Sectional meet. Roger then entered into the state fina ls and placed 22nd. The lettermen were: seniors; Roger Johnson, Clarence Cott- rell, John Thompson, and Dan Mills. The juniors were Dick Winteregg, Palmer Johnson, and Bob Doan. The freshmen were Kent Koons and Don Reinking. Several boys look like good prospects for next year. They are Carter, Ailerson, Kohne, Cole, Owens, and Jones. Of course, we musn ' t forget the routine of calisthentics with its rhythmic 1-2-3 str-r-re- ee-tch, up-down, right-left. Later in the season, however, when the basketball craze rolls around, the girls put all else aside and take an active part in this sport. An intramural league was organized and games were played in the evenings. As the basketball season drew to an end, a class tourney was organized with the juniors coming out as the victors, winning over the seniois in the final game. Spring is here and Miss Walters takes her classes out-of-doors to Worthman Field or Lincoln playground where softball or tennis are played. When any decorating is to be done or props to be made, Miss Kauffman and her Art Club are called upon. The club organized by first electing officers. They are Norma Brown, president, Norman Kohne, vice-president, and Jim Bassett, secretary- treasurer. Soon Christmas time rolled around and the first of many projects for the Art Club be- gan. The stained glass window had to be repaired and the stage setting arranged. The top corner windows in the north of the build- ing were docorated with scenes from the Christmas story. This is an annual tradition at D.H.S. which the Art Club enjoys to carry on. Sectional tourney time came and we painted a sign for each participating school with its respective colors. Another important project that keeps everyone busy is the background and other scenery for our operetta, Princess of Virginia. Prom time shows the juniors of the Art Club busy v orking on decorations and trying to keep it a secret. Of course the Art Club doesn ' t work for nothing. They made pompoms and gold and purple streamers to wave at the Regional. They sold them; with the profit they enjoyed a delightful party. OFFICERS: Norma Brown — President Norman Kohne — Vice-president Jim Bassett — Secretary-Treasurer 58 OFFICERS: Sue Baughn — President Betty Lehrman — Vice-president Winona Miller — Secretary Virginia Koenig — Treasurer J4. owie C cowowilcS The Home Economics Club was reorgan- ized at the beginning of the school year under the supervision of Miss Newcomb. The first activity of the club was to sell hot dogs, popcorn, pop, and coffee to the foot- ball fans on those chilly nights at Worth- man Field. The annual assembly program consisted of The Ambassador Male Quartet which proved quite entertaining. The more enthusiastic members prepared and served six banquets during the year. The Home Economics girls were kept busy ■learning the various tasks of homemaking. During the year the various classes consisted of planning, preparing, and serving meals; selecting, making, and caring for clothing; furnishing the home; understanding young children; and managing time, energy, and money in the home. The finale of the club was the Mother ' s Tea where the members of the class modeled be- fore their mothers and guests the garments they had made in class. Again this year we had eliminations for the Amer- ican Legion Oratorical Con- test. Nine members of the class partcipated, and from this group the very capable Margaret Harris was cho- sen to represent us in the countv contest. Althou ?h she didn ' t win the contest, she gave a fine speech, and we are all proud of Mar- garet. We have several boys en- tering the Rotary Discus- sion Contest this year. We are sure that all the boys will do a fine job. Our class again appeared on two Junior Town Meet- ings this year. The four speakers were Barbara Beehler, Marvin Stuckv, Phyllis Kohler, and John Doan. These programs gave the class the expe- rience of being on the radio as well as speaking for a large crowd. The discus- sions were interesting and the programs successful. Several students have presented programs for the Lions Club and the Women ' s Club, and we presented two assemblies during the Legion Contest. All of these programs have been won- derful experiences for those who particinated, and we all owe Mr. Dorwin a thank you for his help. 60 c ommeraa The Commercial Club, composed of students with at least two years ' work in the commercial department, was organized again this year. At the first meeting the fol- lowing officers were elected: Kathryn Goldner, president; Phyllis Kohler, vice-president; Helen Smallwood, secre- tary; and Tom Gaunt, treasurer. The biggest project of the year for the Commercial Club is issuing the Gab Fest. The articles are written by the students of the high school, and are then passed to the Commercial department. The artic ' e . are edited by our capable supervisor, Mr. Hetrick, and are then tj ' ped. All the typing and mimeographing is done m the classes by students. In this way we can put our typing skill into practical use. We wish Mr. Hetrick and his future Commercial Clubs much success in their future undertakings. The band played at the Sectional Tournament; the Drum Corps played at the football games and one night dur- ing the tourney. The people held their breaths as Lois White threw her flaming baton into the air as she led the drum corps at Worthman Field. Lois also twirled at some of the basketball games as a special event — and a special event it was. The two small twirlers with their colored batons added a lot, too. The Band had its annual chicken din- ner that Selly gives for them. They participated in the parade at the Bluff- ton Street Fair and the Decatur Cal- lithumpian parade.
