It turned out to be quite a thriller with Bluffion gain- ing an edge in the opening minutes of the game and winning 6-0. The Jackets showed plenty of power and decided to use it in the next game against the powerful Auburn Red Devils. Auburn went into the game with a twenty-three game winning streak. The score was even at the half 0-0, but the Jackets came through in the third and fourth quarters to win 14-0. With one victory under their belts the Jackets opened their home season giving Garrett a 31-0 defeat. The Jackets scored every quarter and twice in the fourth quar- ter. Quite a few of Decatur ' s subs saw action in this game. The victory was also witnessed by almost 1000 fans. Still going strong, the Jackets traveled to Fort Wayne South Side stadium to meet Concordia. Decatur proved the better though Concordia started a rally in the fourth quar- ter, fell short, and were defeated 19-13. Still going strong, the Decatur Yellow Jackets came through with another victory by handing the Portland Panthers a 13-0 setback. Nearly 1,400 fans were present to ee the Jackets come to life the second half after a scoreless first half. The Decatur eleven came through again to defeat the New Haven Bulldogs 26-0. This was the third conference win for the Jackets against one defeat. The Warsaw Tigers had all they could take care of when they came against the Yellow Jackets but proved to be on top that game by handing the Jackets a 20-6 defeat. This ended a five game winning streak for the Jackets. Not able to get completely on their feet after the Warsaw defeat, the Jackets came 41 Managers: G. Odle and B. Smith up against a team who was playing their best game of the season. Columbia City. Decatur just was not able to click, and the game end- ed with a 6-6 tie. Determined to get back into the win col- umn, the Jackets walloped the Hartford City Airedales 32-7. This was the highest score for the Jackets this season. They scored in all but one quarter. The subs scored the last touchdown of the game. The Decatur Yellow Jackets ended their football season for ' 49 by receiving a 32-0 defeat from Fort Wayne Central, but Cen- tral had to fight for every touchdown. The Decatur squad ended a rather success- ful season with 6 wins, 3 defeats, and 1 tie. The Jackets scored 147 points while their opponents scored only 84. Five members of the team got recognition on the All-North Eastern Indiana Conference team. Kenny Grant and Sam Bogner were first team full back and right half, respectively; Doyle Liby, second team tackle; Dan Freeby and Don Smith honorable mention. Kenny Grant also received honorable mention on the all state football team. There were quite a few Sen- iors on this year ' s team, but some good pros- pects remain for next year. So from all the members graduating this year to the foot- ball team of 1950, Good luck on a successful season: X N.THOMAS liJ.B4SSETT - 5 cn anKoaK ; l .. - ' - ei , ,-g Rf MEYERS Top Row: Lester Sautbine, Jack Petrie, Jerry Gehrig. BASKETBALL Coaches Deane Dorwin Bob Worthman Ihe Yellow Jackets Backetball team under the capable di- rection of Bob Worthman and Deane Dorwin started the ' 48-49 season with a close game in which they defeated the Geneva Cardinals in an overtime, 49-47. The Jackets had not been pressed in that game as was shown the next week when they lost a thriller to the Garrett Railroaders, 56-52. Though the Jackets had their ups and downs through the season, the fans and school were still behind them. One of the slumps in the season came just before Christmas when the Jackets lost three straight games. They did, however, snap out of it in time to win the New Year ' s tourney at New Haven for ihe second consecutive year. The Jackets went on, losing only a few games, to the end of the season in almost perfect form and ended the year by trouncing Portland 64-50. The last week in February Decatur proved it was tops in the county by taking the sectional. The Jackets confirmed this by first defeating the ' 48 sectional champions, the Hart- ford Gorillas. In the semi-finals Decatur met the tough Kirkland Kangaroos. It looked like the last for the Yellow Jackets, but in the last two minutes they began to click and won easily. In the final game against Monroe, Jackets led all the way and were not once threatened. The next week they traveled to Huntington for the Re- gional. Their opposition was the Lancaster Bobcats from the Bluflton Sectional. The game was close for the first few mmutes, but then Lancaster hit a few easy ones and was soon oflf to the races. It was a heart breaker for the Yellow Jackets, who had very poor luck in hitting and were defeat- ed, 53-41. Eight of the first twelve men turned in their last perform- ance in the Regional game. They were: Neil Thomas, Cap- tain, Dan Freeby, Sam Bogner, Kenny Grant, Dick McCon- nell, Don MacLean, Dick Ogg, and Doyle Liby. The under- classmen who will carry on for the school are George Bair, Harold Bohnke, Vic Strickler, and Jerry Gehrig. From the seniors to the coaches and the team of ' 49- ' 50 season, we say, Best of luck and a successful season. This period is handled very well well by Coach Everhart. It is up to him to teach the Junior Jackets the fundamentals of good basketball and also the rules of sports- manship. The Junior Jackets won 10 and lost 8 games this year. Watch these boys, because some of them will be future varsity men. The main contest of each season is the City Series between the Junior High and St. Joe. For the first time in three years, St. Joe won the Wemhoff Trophy, which is awarded to the winner. But the Junior Jackets just did not hand the trophy to St. Joe. No, they put on quite a battle as is shown m the scores of the three games. The first game St. Joe won, 22-20. The second game was really the battle, and the Junior Jackets won in a double overtime, 26-25. St. Joe won the third game by a score of 29-27. The season record is as follows: Junior High 24 Convoy 20 Junior High 22 Geneva 29 25 Hartford 23 12 Monmouth 13 26 Bluffton 23 17 Kirkland 25 26 St. Joe 25 16 Double Overtime 18 10 Hartford 18 22 17 Hoagland 6 23 17 Bluffton 22 6 43 Geneva 22 27 St. Joe 29 18 Monmouth 23 33 Kirkland 23 Berne 20 St. Joe 39 Hoagland 44 Debolt Coach — Sylvester L. Everhart 47 When the first days of this year ' s baseball season appeared, the Yellow Jacket Baseball team, under the coaching of Deane Dorwin and his assistant, Bob Worthman, took to the field to better last year ' s record of 11 wins and 1 loss. Nine lettermen returned from last year ' s team. By the scores of the first six games, it looked as though the Jackets were on their way to set a record of wins for Decatur High. This year, like the last two years, the Jackets have three conference games. Last year, after winning the first two conference tilts, they were beaten by Warsaw. But this year the boys 48 BASEBALL are going to bring home the bacon to Decatur. Of the first six games this year, the Jackets have won all of them by good margins. The following are the scores of these contests and the games yet to be played: Yellow Jackets 4 Wren 1 30 Convoy 5 Geneva 2 3 Ohio City 1 7 Dunkirk 1 14 Berne 2 May 3 Berne May 6 Bluffton May 11-12 Warsaw (Conference) May 13 New Haven (Conference ■ ' May 18 Bluffton (Conference) May 21 Howe May 25 Huntington Coach: Deane T. CROSS COUNTRY The 1948 cross-country team has come and gone, but with us it has left a very impressive record for such a new sport in D. H. S. Their 1948 record is as follows: Victories Garrett Kendallville Elmhurst 2nd in N. E. I. C. meet 4th in Sectional meet Losses North Side (Ft. Wayne) South Side (Ft. Wayne) Roger Johnson and Carl Smitley won 2nd and 3rd places, re- spectively, in the conference meet. With such an impressive record Coach Harry Dailey should have little trouble in building another great cross-country team in 1949. This year ' s letter-men were members of every high school class: Seniors: Carl Smitley, Norman Stingley, and Bob Lehrman. Juniors: Roger Johnson, John Thompson, David Cole, and Clarence Cottrell. Sophomores: Dick Winteregg. Freshmen: James Moses and Bob Sudduth. Such a large group of returning letter-men should make De- catur the future N. E. L C. and Conference Champions. Here ' s wishing Coach Dailey and his 1949 team all the luck in the world in bringing home next year ' s championships. Coach: Harry Dailey 60 SvND TRACK Plagued by the loss of Lettermen, the track team had to go through the process of rebuild- ing this year. Using the eight returning Letterman as a nucleus and the forty-five candi- dates to fill the many vacancies, the 1949 track team as formed. Before the basketball sea- son was ended the track team was working out in the gym and by warm weather most of the boys were in mid-season form. The list of meets that have taken place so far this year is as follows: Huntington and Concordia and Decatur Second Place Bluffton and Berne and Decatur Second Place Columbia City and Decatur Second Place Monmouth and Geneva and Decatur First Place Goshen Relays (twenty-nine teams) Ninth Place There are still four meets to be held this season, N.E.I.C, County meet, a four-way meet with the Fort Wayne Schools, and the Sectional meet. This year ' s returning lettermen were, Stingely, Smitley, Foreman, MacLean, Bogner, Mills, R. Johnson, and McConnell. Congratu- lations to Mr. Dailey and the track team on a successful season. Volley ball, kick ball, deck tennis, red-white and blue, and dodge ball are a few of the games enjoyed by the girls. However, when basketball season rolls around, the girls put all else aside and take an active part in this sport. An intramural league was organized and games were played in the evenings two nights a week. As the basketball season drew to an end, a class tourney was organized with the juniors coming out as the victors, winning over the seniors in their first game, 19 to 21. In the finals, they won over the sophomores, 9 to 12. With spring here. Miss Walters takes her classes out-of-doors to Worthman ' s Field where Softball and tennis are played. Archery, a new activity in our school is also being enjoyed with much enthusiasm. -f m f m T f v k ' m M ri M ■m. t IHTRAMURAIS Heavy Weights Top Left: First Row— Bill Hutker, Ralph Smith, Bob Smith, Max Andrews. The Home Economics Club was reorganized at the beginning of the school year and the offi- cers were elected. The first activity of the club was to sell hot dogs, popcorn, pop, and coffee to the football fans on those chilly nights at Wortlinian Field, Several banquets were well prepared and served by the energetic members. The annual assembly program was an interesting and entertaining concert by an outstand- marimba player, James Dutton. The Home Ec. girls were kept busy learning the various tasks of home- making. During the year the various classes consisted of planning, prepar- ing, and serving meals; selecting, mak- ing, and caring for clothing: furnish- ing the home: understanding young children; and managing time, energy, and money in the home. The activities and projects could not possibly have become completed without the helping hand of Mrs. Lust. Officers: (left to right )- Nancy Krick, -Pat Gause, Sally Ahr, Janet Ruck, 64 COLOR V HEEL Last fall the art class of 36 members organized the Color Wheel Club, under the supervision of Miss Kauffman. As usual the art class is busy all year. Starting with the Christmas program, the class did their share of the work. The repairing of the large staiired glass window made by the art class a few years ago, was the next project. Then, the group decorat :d two of the school windows with Christmas flowers — huge poinsettias. For the sectional the class painted a sign for each school participating in the tourney, showing school colors and emblems. A Spring Square Dance was given by the Art Club and Glee Club for the mem- bers and the guests. The dance was in the Gym and refreshments were served later in the evening. The last project of the class was mak- ing stage settings for the Operetta, The Golden Trail. The year proved to be interesting and exciting for all the students. Kathryn Gold- Phyllis Kohler, D H. S. November 3, as everyone around D. H. S. knows, is the birthday of our talented band director, Albert Sellemeyer. He has been our leader for 16 years. His birthday is cele- brated annually by the band members. Although he acts surprised, we know it ' s all an act. The band supper or Sell ' s Banquet is one of the most anticipated events of the year to the band members and students who take band lessons. The food is wonderful! Bob Doan is our capable and hard-working sergeant- at-arms. He is always there to tell you your shoes are the wrong color or ask you where your black stockings are. He also checks attendance very carefully. The band in full uniform has been participating in a number of activities this past year. They started with the Bluffton Street Fair; then followed the Calithumpian Parade, Mr. Sellemeyer, Director Top Row: Margaret Harris, Dora Brunnegraff, Colleen McConnell, Carolyn Burnett, Luther Schrock. BAND political rallies, basketball games, football games, and the Sectional and the Regional Tournaments. The band also marched in the Sectional Victory parade, but they didn ' t play; the valves and slide instruments froze, and it was impossible to use them. We also gave a concert for an assembly program every year. The band is not idle during the summer, for they present weekly outdoor concerts. We most not forgot our three majorettes, C alleen Lehman, majorette; Carol Baumgardner, and Pat Treon, twirlers. In their attractive uniforms they have performed at basketball games and tournaments. During the entire year the band sponsor; several dances for band members only and others for all students of D. H. S. Twenty-two members of the band form the Drum Corps which gives excellent marching performances at football and basketball games and at the Sectional Tournament. Last but not least are the band officers. D jn Smith, president; Katherine Goldner, vice- president; Phyllis Kohler, secretary and trea ;urer; and Bob Doan, sergeant-at-arms. SPEECH AcnvrnE This year ' s speech class has several inter- esting speech projects through which they gained experience and brought honors to our school. The first was the participation in the Junior Town Meeting sponsored by radio station WOWO. Taking part in this program were Dora Brunnegraff, Robert Hansel with other class members as ques- tioners. The second was the City Desk aired over radio station WKJG. Participat- ing were Sarah Krick, Colleen McConnell, Norman Stingely, Marcus Foreman and Odell Foley in this news discussion program. Later, four students: Barbara Helm, Marcus Foreman, Sam Bogner, and Odell Foley gave a discussion on World Peace before the P.T.A. at the Lincoln School. Each year Decatur is able to have some students excell in speech work. This year Ihere were two. Colleen McConnell, after eliminating Marcus Foreman, Odell Foley, and Alice Langston in the high school con- test, went on to win the county American Legion Oratorical Contest and was not de- feated until she had gone to the district finals. Marcus Foreman showed that he was adept to Mr. Dorwin ' s teaching in that he won the local Rotary Speech Contest and went to Berne to win again in the Group F finals. Marcus went to the district finals at LaPorte on April 30 and gave D.H.S. excellent representation. The club also issued The Gab jest and accomplished a new system of setting-up the various articles. They enjoyed a party on March 25th with refreshments and dancing. These are only a few of the activities which we have been able to accomplish through the guidance of our sponsor, Mr. Hetrick. 77 CHRISTMAXS PROGRAM • ■f-i; i%f: CHICAGO TRif Top Left: The group waiting to go into the Field museum.
