HEAVY WEIGHTS 47 Junior High BasJ etball The Junior Jackets of 48 made a good record for themselves by winning 14 games while losing only 4. Coach Everhart had four players from last year ' s squad who formed the nucleus of this year ' s team. Those four are: K. Everett, N. Pollock, G. Kolter, and J. Moses. Others who filled out the rest of the team are Bell, Carter, Engle, Brokaw, Custer, Foor, Schieferstein, Secaur and other second stringers. Coach Everhart had the difficult task of whipping into shape the inexperienced players, but after weeks of practice they were to start their basketball career. Each year is featured by the city Series between St. Joe and Jr. High, and this year was no exception. The championship was won by Jr. High for another year. Jr. High took two straight games, 25-14 and 40-28. This year ' s Jr. High team has made a good record for themselves which will give the teams of the future something to work for. The season ' s scores are as follows: ■i , , Jr. High 16 Hartford 19 Jr. High 23 Debolt 21 Jr. High 25 Convoy 17 Jr. High 45 Berne 19 Jr. High 39 Monmouth 17 Jr. High 36 New Haven 8 Jr. High 13 Bluffton 17 Jr. High 28 Hoagland 31 Jr. High 36 Berne 13 Jr. High 38 New Haven 15 Jr. High 25 Kirkland 15 Jr. High 23 Hartford 28 Jr. High 39 Geneva 24 Jr. High 29 Hoagland 28 Jr. High 25 St. Joe 14 Jr. High 40 St. Joe 28 Jr. High 23 Bluffton 17 Jr. High 34 Geneva 19 Standing: Don Metzger, Robert Ailerson, Ferris Kohne, Luther Shrock, Lowell Engle, Norman Pollock, Burdette Custer, Norman Schieferstein, Jerry Carter. Junior High Intramural 49 Baseball Safe Enough Home Run Out Strike Three The Yellow Jackets baseball team got started in the win column by defeating Convoy 5-3 and continued in that column until the final appearance when the Jackets were defeated for the N.E.I.C. championship by Warsaw by a score of 13-4. Sporting new baseball uniforms the Yellow Jackets had six regulars returning from last year. They are: Jim Helm, Bill Gaunt, Herman Everett, Ralph Jackson, Ronald Ballard, forming the base of this year ' s team. Because of the weatherman this season was somewhat shortened to 12 games. The feature of this season was the trip to Marion where Decatur won a doubleheader by scores of 2-0 and 7-1. The team will be injured somewhat by the loss of 6 regulars. But there are several other prospects who will try to fill these vacancies. Those who will be back next year are, Chalmer Plumley, Paul Busse, Larry Jennings, Kenneth Grant, Don Wefel, Harold Bohnke, Don Smith, Dick Ogg, Lester Sautbine, and Jack Petrie. Step- ping out of the spotlight to let new talent step in, the Seniors of this year ' s team wish the teams of next year and all years to come, Good Luck. No! No! No!, in the Home Economics rooms the letters F. H. A. don ' t stand for Federal Housing Administration. To us they refer to Future Homemakers of Amer- ica. We are proud to say that our Decatur Home Economics Club is now an Official member of that national organization. The President of this organization is Evelyn Gerke; vice president, Nancy Krick; secretary, Juanita Zimmerman; treasurer, Shirley Mitchel. The girls prepared and served the following banquets: Football Banquet, Band Banquet, Speech Banquet, F. H. A. luncheon, and the Teachers Banquet. In addition to the banquets, we prepared and served teas. The money which we derived from the Football Canteen is used for our assembly programs. The kitchen is now very neat with the neat Bendix Washer, Bendix Dryer and Bendix Ironer. A new electric stove has also been added, so the girls are kept quite busy. However, with all this we couldn ' t get along without Miss Steury, our teacher. All the girls enjoy working with her in both regular classes and in 4-H work. Kristine Striker, President; Marcus Forman, Vice-president; David Moore, Sec- retary-treasurer. As usual the art club members were doing their share for the Christmas play, painting and designing certain things that were needed. The Music room and Library windows were decorated as always by the art club members. The art club participated in making ready for the tournament by drawing and painting signs for every school in the tourney. Again this year we were very busy painting scenery for the Operetta Chonita. There are a few of the members who will enter the county American Legion Poster Contest advertising the sale of Poppies. On March 12, 1948, the Art Club entertained with a St. Patrick party. Each mem- ber brought a guest, which made a rather large group when together. Entertainment consisted of a treasure hunt, in the school. Games and dancing were held in the Music Room. A delicious luncheon was served. Thus ended another exciting year for the Art students. 63 icers Jane Daily - _ - President Bob Smith - - Vice-President Medford Smith - Secretary-Treasurer The D is for Decatur. The Glee Club made records which were played along with others over the loud speaker in front of the building. Plans were made and re- hearsals were held for the annual Christmas program. The choir, in robes, furnished the background music and the Christmas story was carried out in pantomime. A large crowd was in attendance and all left in silence showing their reverence and appreciation of the Christmas season.
