Text from Pages 1 - 108 of the 1946 volume:

Spotlight On D. R S. This is a spotlight on the students of Decatur High School, whose activities are so im- portant to the life of the school. The spotlight ' s broad beam now catches the thrill and excitement of our favorite sport, then falls quickly on the serious side of that famous proverb which might be stated thus: All play and no work makes Jack of D. H. S. a dull boy. Thus through the misty spotlight at the back of the stage, we see useful lives molded accurately to a form prepared by diligent study. Through the Ravelings we will guide the spotlight so that you may obtain a thorough pic- ture of how Decatur High School prepares its students through work and play for anv walk of life. Miss Elzey and Miss Pumphrey were chosen as our co-sponsors and the following officers were elected: Barbara Hoblet, president; Mary Leitz, vice president; Bon- nie Schieferstein, secretary; and Sally Smith, treasurer. In no tirne at all we were off to the ball games. What ball games? It doesn ' t matter to the Pep Champs. Be it football, basketball, or baseball, we support them all with the utmost enthusiasm. However, our enthusiasm reached the point of hysteria when we won the blind tourney by one point and were defeated, also by one point, in the sectional tourney. All winter long we tramped faithfully through rain, snow, and sleet to support our players. We even pleaded tearfully with boys who had auto- mobiles to take us to the out-of-town games. (If anyone ever tells you that a man can ' t resist a woman ' s tears, don ' t believe him.) Where there ' s a will, there ' s a way, however, and many of us managed to attend most of the out-of-town games. Our contributions to the year ' s social activities were a combination Valentine party and dance and a hayride. We enjoyed the activities immensely this year and are confident that the up-and-coming under- classmen will continue to lend their full support to our various athletic activities Top Picture, Bottom Roiv: Mai-gene Bauer. All of us have gained a general knowledge of such impor- tant phases of publishing as engraving, printing, and organizing material for a yearbook. Many students not pictured gained a new experience in writing articles for the book. However, all the Staff heartily agree that the assistance of Miss Worthman, Staff Advisor and director of the af- fairs of business, Mr. Smith, director of photog- raphy, Mr. Hetrick, typing director, and Miss Weidler, proofreader, were invaluable. We of the Staff hope the splotlight has given you a clearer picture of D. H. S. and that its beam may never fade from your memory. r Commercial Club , . Again this year, the Commercial Club met for its twenty-fourth year of organization. The first thing ac- complished was the election of officers. Those elected were Mary Alice Bein- eke, president; Bill Whittredge, vice president; Wanda Busse, secretary; and Lois Chronister, treasurer. Some of the activities for the year included the publishing of the gossip column, better known as the Gab- Fest. Those in charge of presenting this little tidbit were Mary Lou Robin- son, editor-in-chief; Ted Hill and Phil Thomas, assistant editors. Also the sponsoring of a chapel program, fea- turing Jesse Phillips Robertson and his Song Hits of 1945, B. C, was an enjoyable feature of the j ear. Then too, one of the nicest activities which the Commercial Club with the aid of the Glee Club presented was the semi- formal dance held March 22, in the auditorium. The music was furnish- ed by Woody Neff ' s orchestra frcrn Fort Wayne. This eventful and prosperous year was further made possible by the club ' s sponsors, Mr. Hetrick and Mr. Millikan, who so capably guided our ways in the business world. Busy. Girls? At the beginning of the 1945-46 school year, the art class of thirty-three members reorganized the Color Wheel Club, under the supervision of Miss Kauffman. The members elected the following officers: Pres., Hubert Feasel; Vice President, Bar- bara Roop; Sec.-Treas., Onalee Zimmerman. The club members planned an interest- ing year and waded into their work. One of the first activities of the year was to stencil the kitchen cupboards, curtains, and screens with beautiful morning glory designs. This project was done by Hubert Feasel and Bill Eichhorn. Marjorie Moser, Betty Baumgartner, Richard Saylors, and Jack Harker helped with the Christmas decorations, which were large religious chalk panels at each side of the stage. The club also helped with the decorations for the Spring Revue. On March the 14th, a Come-as-you-are- Party, was enjoyed by all the club mem- bers, and prizes were given to the most comically dressed. Thus ends another eventful and exciting year for the art stu- dents. The Home Economics Club was re-or- ganized the first week of school and the following girls were elected as officers: Phyllis Hoffman, president; Evelyn Fisher, vice president; Betty Baumgartner, secre- tary and treasurer. Some of the projects that gave us new and added experiences this year were the setting up of the canteen for the football games, preparing and serving a number of banquets throughout the year, and the re- making of a number of the costumes for our spring revue. Each month a different group of girls were responsible for the club ' s entertain- ment, which also proved to be an interest- ing project. Life for young and old takes on a richness of purpose, a tender- ness of love, and a warmth of understand- ing when it is enriched with music and song. The art of music is the sunshine for a more abundant life. It is for this reason that more than sixty students of this school found it a pleasure and privilege to gather for Glee Club re- hearsal three hours each week under the capable direction of Miss Helen Haubold. Much time and willing devotion was al- so given by the accompanists, Marelyn Schultz and Richard Saylors, to aid in the success of this undertaking. At the beginning of the school-vear, the Girls ' Glee Club and the Boys ' Glee Club voted to combine and elected the follow- ing officers: Marelyn Schultz, president; Richard Saylors, vice president; Mary Lou Robinson, secretary; and Ted Hill, treas- urer. Early in November the Glee Club pre- sented its annual concert. It was given in the high school auditorium and was enthusi- astically favored with a capacity audience. A dance sponsored by the Glee Club and the Commercial Club was held March 22. Everyone had a very enjoyable time. The musical review, America Sings, presented on April 11 and 12, was a grand success. The Baccalaureate services for the grad- uating class was enriched by appropriate selections from this singing group. And then came the Commencement Exercises when these song lovers made their final appearance in splendid form and true no- bility. Oh, How We Love Our Dear Old D. H. S. was not just the usual song of de- parture, but to the Glee Club it signified appreciation and high regard for the school that so richly taught and gave them also the power o: : music. After the loss of so many seniors last year, we were a little handicapped until we got started under the able direction of Marelyn Schultz and Mr. Sellemeyer. Officers were elected for both the Combined and the High School Bands. The officers elected for the Combined Band were Medford Smith, president; Barbara Anspaugh, vice president; and Kristine Striker, sec- retary-treasurer. The following peo- ple were chosen to guide the ways of the High School Band: Dorothy Koh- ler, president; Richard Saylors, vice president; and Phil Thomas, secre- tary-treasurer. ' Stf iM The drum corps was organized again with six- teen members. They played first for the Blind Tourney on New Year ' s Day, and again for the Sectional Tournam-ent. The band, as well as everyone else, was very proud of them. Again this year, Selly gave a chicken dinner for the members of the band on November 7. The dinner and dance that followed were enjoyed by everyone present. Some of the band ' s activities for this year in- cluded playing for the Blind Tourney, the Sectional Tournament, the basketball game at Bluffton, and all of the home football and basketball games. Even though the war is over, we are still un- able to get those long awaited treasures, our uni- forms. We are still trying very hard anyway. The band will lose quite a few very good mem- bers by graduation this year. They are Marelyn Schultz, Ann Maddox, Barbara Roop, Lois Chron- ister, Barbara Bracey, Geraldine Andrews, Jerry Ketchum, Karl Kolter, Phil Thomas, and Richard Saylors. These people have done a fine job and we shall miss them next year. Many seventh graders were started on the band road this year by Mr. Sellemeyer, so next year ' s band should be equally good or better than the one this year. The Howling Hosts In the year of 1923 there was an organization started known as the Howling Hosts made up of D. H. S. boys for the purpose of promoting athletic enthusiasm. This organization has been carried on by the D. H. S. boys until the present time. To become a full fledged member of the Howling Hosts, each boy must purchase a season ticket for either the football games or the basketball home games. The first part of the year officers were elected. These were the results: Gene Myers, president; Paul Bucher, vice president; Herb Johnston, see- To? Picture, Bcttovi Row: Merlin Lister. Nevertheless, you culd count on the Howlers being present at eech game to help to create a spirit of victory in our teams. Co c For four years, at Decatur High School, there has been a group of athletically-mind- ed students who have worked, played, and sacrificed much for the bettennent of sports in our school. There are quite a few of these Senior Lettermen . . . fellows in school, and if it had not been for them, sports, which play a great part in our school, would have been neglected, forgotten, and maybe dropped. These fellows are the Senior lettermen. Next year the school will have another group of these athletes; un- doubtedly this group will be as big as the one this year. These fellows are all seniors, who have helped further the different sports in many ways. They will undoubtedly be missed. Most of these fellows have been looking for- ward to getting their honor sweaters and let- ters since they first knew about the sport. The lettermen of 1946 wish the lettermen of future years the best of luck in their sports careers. D Football . ♦ . Two weeks before school started Coaci Dan Periy issued a call for foctball can- didates. He wes faced with about thirty-five prospective football players. The first few days were used for calisthenics and the fundamentals of football. Then came the difficult task of selecting the players for the varsity. The inexperience of the players hindered him; therefore he used many underclassmen on the first eleven giv- ing them the needed experience for the next few years. Those clawing Tigers from Bluffton opened the season by taking home a 19-6 victory. Decatur had one consolation scoring its first touchdown since 1943. The following Friday the Jackets were baffled by the deception of the Portland Panthers and were defeated 68-0. Auburn came to V crthman Field and took home a very decisive 60-0 victory. The Decatur eleven invaded the lair of the Portland squad and were sent homo Paul mmmond with a bitter 53-0 defeat. The Jackets then journeyed to Garrett where they put up a great battle, but were beaten 14-0. Decatur was then beaten by the V arsaw Tigers, a new team in our confer- ence, by a sjcore of 26-0. Columbia City ' s undefeated team came to Decatur and beat the Jackets 37-::!0 with Decatur scoring all its points in the final quarter. The Jackets then met New Haven here and were beaten 14-0. New Haven is also a new team in our conference. Decatur closed the season by holding Bluffton, their arch rivals, to a 26-26 tie. Bottcm Row: Stanley McBride. Two days before spring thirty-two candidates turned out for their initial baseball workout. Among these were nine returning lettermen: Steiner, Taylor, Knittle, W. Arnold, L. Yellow Jacket fans will see their first home game since 1943. We now have a new diamond at Worthman Field. The Hi-lite of the season will be the NEIC tournament which will be held at Worthman Field May 25. Decatur won the tournament the la t time it was held which was in 1943. The Decatur nine opened the season by walloping the Geneva Cardinals 25-5. The Jackets couldn ' t seem to focus their batting eyes and Berne shut them out 3-0. Enraged by their defeat at Berne, the Yellow Jackets trimmed Convoy 12-3. Here is the remaining schedule: Geneva, here; Willshire. there; Berne, here; Bluff ton, there; New Haven, here; Wil- shire, here; Bluffton, here; Hartford City, there; and the NEIC tcurnamcnt, here, Track . . , Last year track was talked about as the baby sport of D. H. S., but this year it is running shoulder to shoulder with the rest. At the be- ginning of the season about 50 industrious high school athletes were ready to test their skill in the various track and field events. After about the second week of track Mr. Perry, the coach, de- cided he needed an able helper to assist him in instructing those who needed instruction. For this job he chose Mr. Dailey, who has now become a regular figure at the track in Worthman field and an indispensable instructor. The nucleus that was made up of last year ' s returnees consist of Bucher, Myers, Cottrell, Baughn and Lundin. A very promising senior miler who is out for the first time this spring is Jerry Ketchum. He has been running the mile in 4:40; this is quite good for a high school distance man. Next year Mr. Perry and Mr. Dailey will have a much bigger nucleus from which to work for their winning D. H. S. track te£.m. After learning to cut, pivot, to drib- ble and to shoot under Coach Everhart, they were ready to play under the name of Junior Yellow Jackets. Coach Everhart had quite a job this year to make future Yellow Jackets. He had only one player, Bob Dague, left from last year ' s squad. With twelve other hopefuls he put together a winning combination. The feature of each season is the City Series between St. Joe and Jr. High. For the second straight year the prized Wemhoff Trophy went to the Jr. High. The Jr. High took two straight games, 20-14 and 25-15. In the remaining scheduled games Jr. High won 12 and lost 4. If you want to mess with paints, here is your chance. Incidentally, the result of the class ' s work can be seen on the stage of this year ' s revue, which had excellent stage set- tings. Since Mr. Brown ' s duties as principal are so limited, (don ' t let the light burning late at night in his office fool you) he has the added responsibility of teaching civics. Do you understand our complex system of government? You will after a course in civics under Mr. Brown. What can be more practical than a course in typing. If you ' re tiring of the one finger tech- nique, Mr. Hetrick guarantees you ' ll learn to use them all be- fore he gets through with you. There ' s a good opportunity in business for those who take a course in bookkeeping and busi- ness English under Mr. Millikan. This is the foundation for all those future Henry Fords. Interest in sports around De- catur High School is very en- thusiastic. The reason for this can be none other than Coach Perry. He is the coach for basketball, football and track. Besides his coaching he has a hand in teach- ing Biology, and Shop. Art , . . Civics Commercial .  . Shop . ♦ ♦ English . . . History . ♦ Speech . . Mr. Ross Mr. Dorwin Mr. Smith Miss Wsidler Although he teaches history to the Sophomore and Junior classes, Mr. Dorwin is better known for his excellent work in speech. Through Junior Town Meeting Radio Programs and contests, the members of the speech class have gained new experience under Mr. Dorwin ' s expert guidance. Who could ask for a clearer picture of history and geography than that given by Mr. Smith to the seventh and eighth grades. He also acts as director of that difficult job of getting pictures for the annual. English is Miss Weidler ' s spe- ciality. In her classes we get a background of all English litera- ture besides writing themes on anything from family history to newspaper articles. It ' s Mr. Ross ' s responsibility as teacher to give the junior high and Freshman English classes, a thorough basic training in Eng- lish grammar and literature, and we do mean thorough. Music ♦ . ♦ Mathematics . . ♦ Mechanical Drawing . . ♦ Mr. Andrews Mr. Sellemeyer Miss Haubold Mr. Ketchum Here is you chance to sing to your heart ' s content under the capable direction of Miss Hau- bold. The glee club can be heard in concerts or programs several times during the year, and we think you ' re making a big mis- take to miss any of them. Calling all musiciansi This is the chance to show your musical talent. Mr. Sellemeyer is justly proud of his band which has contributed so much to the life and spirit of the football and bas- ketball games. Anyone planning engineering or some kind of construction wor-k as a vocation will be inter- ested in Mr. Ketchum ' s course in mechanical drawing. Mr. Ketchum also teaches mathe- matics and shop. Also on the list of needs for those aspiring to the field of engi- neering will be many courses in mathematics taught by Mr. An- drews. Many students received training under him in solid geometry, a course not offered in many preceding years. This is truly an age of science. Many believe the future of the world will be based on the theory of atomic energy. Through our course in chemistry you may learn many new facts about atoms. If you desire a knowledge of the things about you, from a course in physics under Mr. Al- ger you will learn about mechan- ics, heat, electricity, light and sound. Fresh from teaching in the Navy is Mr. Dailey, who will give you the newest theories in science. Any kind of mathematics does not stop him either. Now and then certain odors permeate the school indicating that the home ec class is cook- ing up something very tasty. Be- sides her duties as home eco- nomics instructor, Miss Worth- man carries the added responsi- bility of Ravelings advisor. Miss Worthman Mr. Dailey Chemistry . , ♦ Physics Home Economics An important part of any one ' s education is physical develop- ment. Miss Pumphrey makes sure that the girls in Decatur High School are not slighted in this phase of education. Mr. Everhart is the instructor in physical education for the boys. Physical fitness is empha- sized especially in his commando class. He is also the Junior-High basketball coach. Decatur High School is fortu- nate to haveamodern, well equip- ped library. Miss Elzey not only acts as librarian but also gives special help to the younger stu- dents so that they may find books more easily. In the foreign language de- partment we have Miss Godfrey, who teaches first and second year Latin. She also directs the activi- ties of the Junior-High English classes.
