DEDICATION WE, the class of Nineteen Hundred Thirty- Three, dedicate this, our 1933 Ravehngs, to the people who are responsible for the beautiful trees in Decatur for: The groves were God ' s first temples. ' Ere man learned To hew the shaft, and lay the architrave And spread the roof above them., — ' ere he fram- ed The lofty vault, to gather and roll back The sound of anthems; in the darkling wood, Amidst the cool and silence, he knelt down And offered to the Mightiest solemn thanks And supplication. — Bryan — A Forest Hymn.

m f m FOREWORD THE theme, Trees , chosen for 1933 Ravelings perhaps can be best explained by the words of Charles Lathrop Pack: Knowledge of trees is more than a duty of good citizens. It is a joy to the one who has this knowledge. The tree is a living thing. It grows as we grow. It pushes upward as we push upward in life. It spreads its branches outward, as we spread the branches of our minds, broadened by experience in life. The tree is a constant lesson to humanity, — a lesson in erectness, in courage, in dignity and in steadfastness. It serves us in thousands of material ways, so should we know that it may serve us in many ways as a guide and a friend.

I think that I shall never see, A poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed Against the earth ' s sweet flowing breast A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray.
