JUNIOR PLAY BECOMES ANNUAL CLASSIC We, as upperclassmen for the first time, began the school year eagerly, resolv- ing to work together to benefit the school as well as our class. This year for the first time since entering Decatur High we placed in Stunt Night by winning second place for our stunt, Any Numbskull Can. Also among the accomplish- ments Ior the junior class was our play, A Roomful of Roses. Mfhen it came time to say good-by to the seniors, we did it in fine style with a wonderful party. Each year adds new memories to our class, and we think this year we received some of our best. Next year our class will be the leaders of Decatur High, and we think that we are well prepared for this responsibility. The thrill and excitement of touring the big high school inspired us to make good founda- tions for the rest of our high school life. As we looked to teachers and older students for help and guidance, we resolved to do our best so that someday we might set an example for others. STUDENT COUNCIL B .. 75. w-, we-s In Members work on the Student Council Convention program. Student Council sponsors first Homecoming at Decatur. The Student Council, is the governmental body at De- catur High Qwhose oflicers are elected by the students in a highly competitive spring election.j One representative and an alternate were elected from each homeroom in the fall for one year's service. Their scholastic and con- duct records had to be approved. In 1956-57 the Student Council kicked off another big year by giving a talent show. There was an air of excitement as the annual magazine sale drew to a close because of the contest between Decatur and Grady, to see who could sell the most magazine subscriptions. We won and the Curtis representative, who had promised he would roll a peanut across the street with his nose, partially fulfilled his pledge by rolling it across the gym floor. The Student Council, with other groups, worked to improve school spirit, and the crowning event to everyone's efforts was Homecoming Day. Also, food was collected before Thanksgiving to be distributed by the Department of Welfare. For the first time at Decatur, there was a Twirp Week, February ll-16. Dances, such as the ones alter the football games, were fun. All in all, the past year has been a very fruitful one for the Student Council and Decatur High. The members worked constantly to maintain the character- istics by which they had been selected and to which they had pledged themselves. Although this honor came only to about fifteen per cent of the senior class and five per cent of the junior class, all high school students should have these qualities. The Chairman this past year was Allen Cadora, and the Secretary was Elaine Merrell. Mrs. Clive Folger served as the faculty advisor. Several projects were planned during the year, such as the Clean-Up Campaign, on which the Junior and Senior Clubs worked together. Since these clubs operated separately most of the year, the projects gave them an opportunity to work as one. The most outstanding highlight of the year was the State Beta Club Convention in Atlanta in March, and Nancy Mat- thews was Decatur High's nomination for the State Secretary. BAND PARENTS CLUB IS ORGANIZED Our Decatur High Band, as is customary, added spirit and excitement as they played long and tunefully in the stands at the football games this year. The sparkling, original half-time shows, led by the smart-looking and high-stepping majorettes, kept the spectators thoroughly entertained. The band this year took part in military inspections and Honors Night , and when they paraded through Decatur in parades, the community felt a surge of pride in their band. The band members practiced long hours. This year for the first time a Band Parents Club was organized for the promotion of the programs and projects of the band. They cooperated with the band in the candy sale and the sale of tickets to the Variety Show. Co-Captain Eugene Bothwell, Alfred Mason, and Roger Couch were other key factors in bringing the big trophies to Decatur. Although Rothwell Q92 ppgj and Couch Q82 ppgj were Capable scorers, they took over defensive and rebounding Chores. Coach Frank .Iones's Bulldogs showed their power by becoming 4-AAA South Champions. The defensive-minded team held region opponents scoreless throughout regular season play. A fine team represented Decatur well, with a 9-2, win-loss record. VVinter-The big event of the sports year came in with the winter season. Neutraliling the cold weather was a hot basketball team that ended a spectacular season by becoming the first state AAA basketball champions. Under the leadership of Coach Charlie Hall, the never-say-die Blue and Gold continually turned on steam in the last half to overpower their opponents. The girls' basketball team had a winning season under Coach Abe Palmer, taking third place honors in the region. B-team girls and boys basketball stressed fundamentals in preparing for varsity ball in future years. Spring-The opening of the leaves and the sprouting of the flowers brought about the opening of spring sports and the sprout- ing of future stars. The baseball team, under Coach jim Lowery, improved with every gameg and although they did not win the region, they were a constant menace to their opponents. Coach Clyde Ehrhardt's track, Coach W. E. Purcell's tennis, Coach A. I.. Fisher's golf, and Coach Aubrey I1Vhelchel's swimming teams, all represented Decatur well. It was the efforts of each and every team mentioned above, that made and held Decatur as the team to beat for all their opponents. One closing word, had it not been for the cheerleaders keeping the spirit high and the students supporting these teams, the record Decatur established would not be possible. Thus sports through this year from fall to winter to spring have become another memory. D-CI.l'B MEMBERS: Left to right, first row: G. Karnett, P. Meyer, N. Dougherty, N. Erickson, N. Pennington, G. DEVELOPS LEADERS OF TOMORROW Once again this year many boys answered the call of the Reserve Officers Training Corps. The cadets were taught many things that would be useful to them in their military careers and in their civilian lives later. One df the most important qualities developed by this course was leadership. The cadet was also taught military discipline, courtesy, and tactics. An- other lesson learned by the cadet was the operation and care of the M-l Rifle, which was issued to him at the beginning of the school year. The cadet also learned to get along with his associates and to co- operate with them. The R. O. T. C. was, is, and will be important in developing the leaders of tomorrow. Forty Fathoms Fantasy was very entertaining as the physical education stu- dents brought the sea animals to the surface around the S. S. Calamity. The program was under the capable leadership of Miss Ann Boiter, and the majorettes taught the dances, all of which were very original and entertaining. The dec nralions, in keeping with the theme, were provided by M rs. Dorothy Cal- der and the Art Department. Mrs. Cottie Clark and the band afforded lilting music for the dances.
