I SENIOR CLASS WINS THIRD STUNT NIGHT TROPHY Lady luck has followed this class throughout its high school career. For the third consecutive year the class has placed hrst in Stunt Night winning the coveted trophy . . . this year for the production Make the Best of Mlhat You Are. The stunt was the result of many hard but fun- filled hours of work. A great deal of talent was discovered among the boys when they presented the senior minstrel to a receptive audience. As spring arrived the seniors stepped out in a colorful array of fashions, ranging from Bermuda shorts to formals. The girls and their escorts were. all dolled up with somewhere to go . . . for they were going to Follow the Sun. After the spring holidays came the last step of the seniors career - the thrill and excitement of graduation which the seniors has so long awaited. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS BEN FLADGER . . . ..... Tlreasurer YVe saw our first glimpse of Decatur and its hospitality during the latter part of the summer when we were so graciously entertained by the Student Council. The difficulty of learning our new surround- ings was made easier with the aid of information directories which helped us find our way through the maze of halls and rooms. As the strangeness wore off, we made new friends and entered into new activities. One of the events in which we participated was Stunt Night, and for the first time the sub-freshmen formed their own dramatic society, The Spot- lighters. Through the year we have become accustomed to high school life, and we are sure that the next years will hold even greater thrills. 2 ...+... C 1 Sub Freshmen learn lilst course in how to study. The staff immediately set to work to gain experience. There were countless things to learn . . . how to make a lay-out, how to plan pictures, how to accept responsibility, how to raise money and many others. In the fall came the first big undertaking, that of planning and taking pictures. It took quite a bit of organizing to take the more than eight hundred individ- ual pictures and much bargaining with the elements so that we could get the club pictures scheduled for outside, Eventually we did finish, and we began putting the book together. Lay-outs were changed . . . then re- changed . . . pictures were cropped . . . copy was written . . . John rewrote it all . . . and finally the book was sent to the printer. After it was gone and the business stall assured us that there was enough money to pay for it, we relaxed for the first time and so did Miss Norton and Miss Stewart, our advisors. The climax of the year was Class Night at which time all of the secrets that had been so carefully guarded were revealed to the students. A Li+'rle Worry and a Loi' of An+icipa1'ion Gives Us The Scribbler The Scribbler is out! Have you seen it? These were familiar words around the campus this year. YV ith work as the motto, the l,'Vriters' Club started the month-long cycle of selling ads, assigning articles, and rushing to complete the copy before deadline each month. But it was all for a good cause - the satisfaction and pleasure of the student body. Guided by the able hand of the advisor, Mrs. lfVilliam Cole, the staff shaped the raw material into the new, improved, 1955-56 Scr1'bI1Ier, but not entirely without a little worry and a lot of anticipation. lfVith a new face, and other modifications, the Sm'ibble'r was the pride of this year's staff and reporters. And so, if the Scribbler period and the Writers' Club meetings became exuberant, it was because the staff was trying to put into this pub- lication twice as much satisfaction as it did in the last issue! is 'x X Left to right: N. Na+ional Honor Socieiy I pledge myself to uphold the high purposes of this society to which I have been elected, striving in every way by word and deed to make its ideals the ideals of my school and of my life. VVith this phrase of the National Society ritual and the four cardinal princi- ples-character, scholarship, leadership, and service constantly in mind, the members of their organization strive to maintain and instill in others these high standards which guide them. Membership in this society is an honor to which many aspire, but it is bestowed only to those who have worked faithfully to attain this honor. The Chairman is K. Head, the Secretary is Juanita Cochran, and the faculty advisor is Mrs. Clive Folger. Bela Clubs Character, achievement, leadership-these are the requirements of our largest honorary organization, the Beta Club. The Junior Beta Club and the Senior Beta Club functioned as separate units, and Illet regularly to plan projects of interest to the entire school. Throughout the year the clubs offered their services to the faculty. Both clubs sponsored the Valentine Dance which afforded a great deal of fun to the many who attended. A spirit of cooperation Was evidenced by the par- ticipation in the State Beta Club Convention which was held in Atlanta. The delegates attended meetings which olfered many new ideas to them. These were eagerly accepted and carried back to the school with the hope that they would be used successfully there. Mr. Lexton Buchanan and Miss Rozelle Shirley are the sponsors for the clubs. Busy hands molded the clay into attractive vases, lamps, trays, and fashioned the copper into colored pins, earrings, and cuff links. These were exhibited at an Art Bazaar in one of Decatur's department stores and the public was able to purchase them. The paint brushes went to work when the Beaux Art Ball rolled around. Office Workers Aoi as lnier-Com System An important, hardworking group in our school which re- oeivm little recognition is the office staff. Running errands, an- swering the telephone, typing, filing and calling classes to lunch are a number of their duties. There is no inter communica- tion system therefore these stu- dents must go to each of our buildings to carry messages. They render a necessary service to the students and faculty. Not only do they serve the school, but they receive valuable experience for themselves. Lei: to right, jim row: A. Woods, D. Kegley, N. Harris, P. Minor, C. Blanch- ard, M. J. Foy, J. Ham, E. Choral Department Presents Gperetta for the First Time Mas. DALE CLARX, Director From the beginning of the year to Christmas a tinge of excitement hovered over the Choral Department . . . for they were going to present, for tin: first time, an operetta - Babes in Toyland. The Mixed Chorus and Glee Club, combined their forces in one of the most enjoyable programs ever presented at Decatur High. The story was a colorful, fast moving one which centered around Mother Hubbard, her many children, and a cruel old man who was after their fortune. However, all ended well, and the entire performance was su erb. P During the remalinder of the year the Choral Department excelled in many other endeavors. ln the Music Festival they earned seven superiors and six excellents. They sang for the Miss DeKalb County Beauty Pagent, for the GEA, as well as for numerous programs in assemblies and around Decatur. The Choral Department is under the capable direction of Mrs. Dale Clark, well-known for her work in the field of Choral music. Mrs. Clark and her Civic Chorus have been invited to YVales to sing. The Mixed Chorus and Glee Club generally function as separate unites. Accompanist for the Mixed Chorus is Loye Greenaway who has served this group so willingly and well. Nancy Matthews, accompanist for the Glee Club has rendered a valuable service. A lovely program was presented on April 13, when they gave their Spring Festival. The year ended with a farewell to Seniors at Baccularate. GIRLS ENSEMBLE First row: P. Baker, A. Ament, V. Gibson, R. Dashiell, S. Bailey, M. Hddges. Team Spirit High Despite 3-7 Record There probably has never been a team with more spirit and determination than this year's team. Due to the fact that the team lost 19 lettermen, the Bull- dogs started the season as a young and inexperienced team. Later, they held the Russell lfViIdcats who were con- sidered one of the top teams in the state, to a score ol' 6-7, also they prevented Rossville, another fine team in the state, from scoring in the first half. Coach Clyde Earhardt and Coach Garvin Miller direct the boys through their paces. At the end of the season they were ranked among the top teams in the region. J sifE'fF-...z - 111 il 1 . L . In addition to the boys who returned from last year, there were many new faces on the team. Despite the overall lack of experience, the team completed a very successful season. Girls Mainiain High Ranking in Tennis The Decatur High Girls tennis team was composed of extremely good players. Due to the lack of depth in the team, they were unable to gain enough points to win as a team. However, the girls who played did an excellent job in represent- ing Decatur. 99 Left to right: P. One ofthe most important things that is taught is military discipline. For those who work hard and do their best, promotions in rank are forthcoming. In addition to military disclipline and courtesy the cadet learns a basic working knowledge of several weapons, including the Color Guard-Left to right: T. Pless, C. McNeil, H. Brecht, K.
