E IUR ULUSE SUGCESSF L YEAR AT DECATUR The senior class of 1955, looking back over five years, remember participating in varied athletic events, a multi- tude of extracurricular activities, and gaining worthy knowledge. From the class came actors, athletes, authors and artists who joined hands in producing championship football teams, plays at stunt night and articles for the Scribbler and Indecatur. Memories of May Day, Macbeth, Military Night, and the Alma Mater will not soon be forgotten. Neither will those events like the Christmas dances, the Senior Play, Kid Day, or the Senior Fashion Show leave our fondest recollections. The Class of '55 leaves Decatur with their lives having been made richer by her halls of knowledge. 18 MARTHA ABBOTT Have you heard my jungle noises? With the same boundless enthusiasm the freshmen participated in the school events. Their class spirit was displayed by the B-team football players and cheer- leaders representing their class' sportsman- ship and vitality. Jimmy, Donalyn, Jerry, and Marcia have carried on this year's activities with the help and cooperation of a won- derful group of homeroom representatives. They started the year off with a bang by forming a welcoming committee and edited the Decatur High Handbook. The student store has also served the school from the first of the school year. After a talent show, in which much hidden talent was discovered, and a very successful magazine sale, the Council was on its way. Delegates were sent to the state and southern conventions, Kim Yung Gil and Chung Joe Sung, the two Korean war orphans, received much needed money, and Aid- more children had a Merry Christmas with many toys and clothes which Student Council sent. The council has initiated a number of lasting programs which will prove highly valuable to the school in years to come. Among these are an intra- mural sports program, a president's council, a safety patrol, a clean-up campaign, and a program to help raise money for the March of Dimes. Mrs. Thorn- ton, Mrs. Folger and Mr. Purcell have helped im- measurably as advisers. TWELFTH GRADE REPRESENTATIVES-Kneeling: M. RuH', J. Bibb. Standing: B. Parr, J. DeFoor, D. Wages, C. Evans, and B. Yet, molded through the capable hands of the new faculty adviser, Mrs. William Cole, and through the leadership of the editor, Chris Davidson, the Scribbler has attained a new interest and popu- larity throughout the school. Vast improvements and advancements have been made since the first edition appeared in 1938. The paper is operated by the members of the Writers' Club, and the staff is made up of representatives from various school organizations and others with unusual writing abil- ity. For those people responsible for it, the Scribbler was more than a monthly publication. Into its pages went long hours of hard work on everyone's part. This required a great deal of cooperation. S0 successfully did they work together that the traditional projects of the depart- ment, such as the annual Christmas Program, were carried on, while at the same time many original ideas were initiated. Several ensembles and an eighth grade chorus were among the newly organ- ized groups. The department has had an extremely busy year, singing for numerous assemblies, P.- T. A. and G. E. Outside the school, this group per- formed at the fall program of the Decatur Civic Chorus and entertained at the annual G. E. A. meeting. With nearly twice as many members as last year, the orchestra played at the Music Festival in Rome, where it proved that quantity had the quality of the best in the region. The band also increased in number, since it lost very few members last year and was strengthened by an infiux of eighth graders. The girls seemed su- perior in every way on the court, as they consistently defeated their able opponents of the region even though they were not always favored to win by the experts. The school was very proud of the girls when they came back from Macon winners of the State Tournament. 96 Fnntn1en et Up ew llennrlls The Decatur High Track Team, which stressed top condition and long endur- ance, finished the season with considerable success after facing many top-performing teams of the area. The story of dancing through the ages imprinted an ever to be remembered scene in the minds of many Decaturites. More than a theme was needed to pre- sent such a performance in which over a thousand students participated. Planning, practicing, and staging were the jobs allotecl to the majorettes, coaches and Military De- partment. The supervision and organization was effectively handled by Mrs. Tucker Pin- ner, Mrs. Claire Thornton, Mr. Frank Jones and Major Tallent. Adding to the color of the May Court, supervised by Mrs. Clive Folger, were music offered by the band, orchestra and mixed chorus, calisthenics, and drills by the cadets.
