It is a whirling, colorful pattern . . . abundant in the organizations, customs, and unquenchable spirit which make a school live for- ever in the hearts of students, faculty, and alumni. There is strength in the pattern, for it has a recognized foundation of high standards. The old elements such as Student Council, May Night, 'Ghurning the mid- night oil, and a championship football team mix easily with the newness of co-education, the mixed Writers' Club, and a re-written alma mater to make the school life of Decatur High, 1954, a truly living pattern. faculty page 6 classes page 12 organizations page 52 athletics page 72 miHtary page 88 features page 96 adverHsements page .114 dedication A superlative teacher and a true friend. an enthusiastic supporter of all school activities and a serious believer in thorough preparation for the future-this is the description of an outstanding man with a unique personality. Jimmy, Ann, and Sue practice for the Senior Fashion Show. The senior's big year really began at the end of their junior year when they received their gold and blue senior rings. Before they knew it they were in the midst of the busiest and most exciting year they had ever experienced. The first class meeting was held to start on plans for money-making projects and graduation details. Co- operation was the by-word as the girls sold charm brace- lets, and everyone chipped in to help with the Senior Fashion Show and ticket sales for the senior movie. At Stunt Night the class received a second place tie for its original cave-man spectacle. After spring holidays time flew until Graduation Night. As the processional was played, the class realized that it was breaking up-an important phase of life was over. The boys and girls said good-bye to the school which had been their second home for hve years. In parting they gave the wish that all future classes at Decatur High may have a year as hlled with enrichment and pleasure as the class of '54. Class mascots. Sally Williams and Knox Dobbins added so much tolhe May Night and Class Night activities. I C z 1 w l JANE BRASWELL JANE BRASWELI. -'1 Imp., llle Bmw. W... 'rm-.fmcu :mm Northside High 2. H. Owen This year our band started out with several strikes against us. We were handicapped by the loss of many members through graduation. This condition was soon remedied by a great number of new members joining the beginners' band. By Christmas most of them were playing like veter- ans. The dilapidated state of our uniforms limited the num- ber of our members, and prevented our appearing in many activities. The ever-loyal Decatur Lions' Club came forward, however, and through a number of fund-raising projects, including a concert by the Decatur Civic Chorus, donated 353000 to the band for the purpose of buying new uniforms and repairing the old ones. We are exceedingly grateful to them and the people of Decatur for their fine support. When the band stepped out for the St. Patrickis Day parade and Military Night, every member had been personally fitted with a new uniform or a completely repaired old one. Mrs. Cottie Clark, who has directed this group for many years, works tirelessly to give to the school and community a band of which they will be proud. She is on call always for per formances. She says that the band will soon sound l than ever because of the enthusiastic eighth-graders future is really looking bright for your Decatur High . , ,, . . The choral department is proud of the versatility of its organization, for it has successfully presented an entertaining and varied program of music for the school this year. Tiny Mrs. Dashiells, director, who gave so much of herself to perfect each detail of the group's performances, climaxed the year with the annual Christmas ' program, to which the entire city was invited. First was the beautiful religious presentation, and then a rollicking , rendition of T'was the Night Before Christmas. As a breath-taking conclusion the Mixed Chorus sang the Nut- cracker Suitef while a ballet group portrayed tiny toy flutes, sugar plum fairies, whirling Russian dancers, and swaying flowers. Individual talent cropped up in the various assemblies, P.-T. A. programs, and other outside activities. The group completed its 1954 season with its appearance at the Baccau- laureate exercises held the Sunday before graduation. Front-D. S. Mackin, Pres., and C. Two plays were given before Christmas Holidays, one a hilarious comedy, the other a serious drama. The former was repeated for the Fifth Annual Drama Festival in Athens, and the president took part in a panel dis- cussion there. During club meetings point- ers were given on make-up, diction, and stage presence. This busy year was con- cluded by a delightful party for the mem- bers. Art Lovers Throw uRecl Hot Ball This year the Art Cluh had as its first project the Beaux Arts Ball. The theme was Dante's lnferno, and the costumes add- cd to the devilish atmosphere. Students deemed the affair an overwhelming success, and plans are to make it an annual event. The money made from the sale of the dance tickets is to he spent to improve the art department and to buy special materials. Miss Sarah Hancock, head of the art de- partment and advisor, reports a growing enthusiasm among the club members. They have taken part in a full year of exhibits, trips. guest speakers, and parties. One of the main duties of the Art Club is to plan eye-appealing improvements for the high school campus. Besides providing good practice for the first squad, the B-Team also played several out-of-town games against the varsities of small high schools. Although their record stands at hvc losses and one tie. the boys played hard and showed a lot of promise. HB Spirit Pepped UP This year, for the tirst time, the B-squads had their own cheerleaders. Luckily, however, they received no serious in- juries and were regarded as an endurable squad by all opponents. The hrst five men-Charles Maynard, Earle Fuller, Jimmy Webb, Tommy Scarbrough. and Sam Wells -proved very able and were backed by a strong second team. As a whole the team did better this season than in the 1953 season. XX ll Veterans Lead Good Diamond Season With the returning of many of last year's players, Decatur was able to boast of a suc- cessful baseball season. Earle Fuller, who has made the Atlanta All-Star team for three straight years, sparked the team at varied positions. Little Don Critchett, a veteran of two seasons, was voted one of the best short- stops in Region 4AA. Other experienced play- ers like Bill Boland, Bob Mathews, Jimmy Newsome, and Randy Hudgins continued in their usual good form. The pitching staff at first looked like it might be a weak spot, but Larkin Waller with the help of some infielders cleared that up. Decatur's Girls' Swimming Team holds the most outstanding record in the school's history. The team has received the winning trophy at every Southeastern Swim Meet in which teams from all over the southern United States com- pete. Only once has it had to take second place in Atlanta's Metro- politan Meet. Arch-rival North side High took that one by a single point. This year the girls took first place in both events, winning the Metropolitan by an over- whelming score. Where do the girls get their skill? Several of the stars belong to Atlanta Athletic Club Team and get plenty of practice participating in meets over the country. A large number of the promising back- stroke, hreastroke, and freestyle artists trained at the Y. W. C. A. during the swimming program of- fered there. Everyone, from diving specialist Nancy Erickson to breastroke champion .lo Holland, had to keep in shapei' over the summer by frequent trips to a neighborhood pool. Decatur should be especially proud of these girls and their fine work. Boys' Rifle Team Keeps High Record The Boys' RiHe team has a long record of victorious seasons. This year the team remained among the top ten of the Inter-Collegiate League and was eligible to fire in the National Rifle Match. The members of the team participated in practice matches with Athens, Mar- ist, and Russell to prepare for competition in the Georgia Athletic Matches. It takes long hours of practice and strong determina- tion to be good in this activity which is a branch of the high school military program. Decatur boys can be proud of their hard-earned skill. Girls' Prove To Be Excellent Marlcsmen The Girls' Rifle Team was organized at Decatur High School in 1952 under the supervision of Maj. Carl H. Bell, then P.M.S.ST., and lVlfSgt. John B. Jowers. Since that time the program has expanded until there are 30 girls capable of upholding the motto, Decatur girls usually get whatever they set their sights on. Betsy Green is still the Annie Oakley of the outfit, maintaining an average in the l70's. Almost all the others are right behind posting consistent scores in the 16O's. The girls are as accurate as the boys in the sitting and prone positions but lack the necessary strength to measure up in the standing position. The girls have enjoyed their matches this year and hope to find more competition next year. 1 First row-L. Cole, J. Holland, L. Hornbeck, M. Holland, D. Threl- lceld, J. Holland. Second row-B.
