We're looking forward to our graduation with eager anticipation, but not without a certain degree of sadness for we realize that our ways are about to separate. Do you recall that September day in 1950 when we entered our new high school for the first time? We were freshmen then. Our sponsor was Coach Charles Smith and Billy Joe Doss was our president. We recognized Bill's ability for leadership and elected him president of our Sophomore Class, too. Miss Kilgore was our sponsor. We had already begun to look forward to the Junior-Senior Banquet and our class trip. With this in mind, we sold magazines in the spring to build up our treasury reserve. With Richard Lee as president and Miss Garrett as sponsor we set out to do great things our Junior year. We sold magazines in the fall and gave our play The Fighting Littles in the spring. We selected Eugene Glenn as president and Mrs. Harvey as sponsor of our Senior Class to guide us through our final year in D.H.S. We broke the record of the school in our magazine campaign. Although our schooldays will soon be over, we shall always cherish the Golden Memoriesv of our Alma Mater. Here's hoping that each member of the class will be successful in every way but may we always remember those wonderful days! A Journey By Eugene Glenn Being a man of worldly ease, and having little for which to spend my great fortune made in the dairy business I decided to take a tour of the world. I was accompanied by my wife, the former Eleanor Chenault, and our four children. The editor of Life Magazine, Ted Solomon, had requested the right to publish an account of my journey and had sent his two ace photographers Stuart LeCroy and Ray Norris, each to be with me on half the trip. Bright and early one spring morning we left Decatur. Mayor Mike Jonas and his wife Martha fWilliamsj were at the airport to bid us good-bye. The hostesses on the plane were Carolyn Drake and Nancy Namie. When we landed in New York, we were met by the mayor of New York, Blan McBride and some of the city officials including Billy Jackson, Jimmy Tucker, and Billy Joe Doss. We had three days to wait before our ship sailed for Liverpool, so we had made reservations at the Waldorf-Astoria. Earl Ferguson was the manager of the hotel, James Fowler was his assistant manager, and Kay Lane was his secretary, and Nancy Carau was the desk clerk. During our stay in New York, Cecil Timberla-ke, president of Ford Motor Co. provided us with a new car, which was inspected by the mechanic Joe Thomas. While we dined in the ballroom, we listened to music from Hoyt Sherard's famous Rhythm Masters orchestra. Ronny Humphrey and Ronald Seibert were in the orchestra and Sedama Lanier was the vocalist. After dinner we went to see South Pacificv in which Catherine Hayes, Colleeon Lawrence, and Gary Rodgers were starring. It made me recall the years gone by to see those names in the bright lights. After the show, I was surprised to run into Roy Sudhoff the eminent scientist. We had a pleasant chat. The next day my son, Eugene, Jr., had a tooth- abhe, so I took him to the dentist Jackie William- son. His assistants were Nell Hooper, Ethel Ann Biles and Mary Frances Sewell. Jackie told me that Sue Clements, Louise Dungy, Orpha Sue Melton, Shirley McBride, Joyce Holmes, Vernie Fay Grizzard, and Sue Francis were all married, living in New York and were regular patients of his. Aurelia Hastings, Peggy Slaton, Sue Trotman, and Barbara Sims were patients, too. By afternoon the toothache was better so we went to see the New York Yankees play the Chicago Cubs. Playing for the Cubs were Tim Baker, Howard Busbey, Billy Ray Mulligan and John Tanner. On the Yankeels team were Edward Knob- lock, Jack Lenz, and Earl Marshall. Manager for the Cubs was Louis Little and for the Yankees was Bobby Patton. On the way home from the game we were struck from behind while waiting for a traffic light. Naturally, it was a woman driver, none other than Ann Wheat. We were glad to see each other, but we wished that the circumstances had been differ- ent. Although nobody was seriously hurt, we thought it best to have a check-up at the hospital. An ambulance driven by Lewis Carroll picked us up. At the hospital we were met by nurses Betty Chenault, Mary Joyce Gardner, and Barbara Garner. Gayle Walters was the receptionist. We were examined by the noted physician, Dr. Shannon Turney. He said that we were all right and could go. Driving through New York we passed billboards with smiling faces of movie stars on them. They were surprisingly familiar. Betty Hazel Hamilton was Lux Lovelyfi and Ann Teel uses Halo Shampoo. Eloise Privett says Fresh up with 7 Up and Jerry Carr, world tennis champion smokes Viceroys. About noon the following day we were ready to embark on our ocean voyage aboard the S. S. Luxury. James McCutcheon was the customs in- spector. While strolling around the deck, I was surprised to see Floyd Sherrod and his wife Doe Doe Morgan. They were taking it easy in their deck chairs, so I stopped to chat. I learned that they were living in Chicago where Floyd was now a successful politician. He told me that several of our former acquaintances were his constituents includ- ing Betty Reeder Banks, Betty Fay Butler, Carolyn Davis, Faye Franklin, Norma Prator ,Evelyn Glover, i Dorothy Meherg, Rebecca Steenson, and Barbara Vincent, all housewives. He said that Pat Odom was chief cartoonist for the Chicago Tribune, and that Tommy Royer owned a chain of shoe stores in Illinois with Vero Wright as his top saleswoman. Three days later, we docked at Liverpool. The first person we saw was Roland Jenkins, customs inspector. He was ably assisted by William Pullen and Malcomb Ray. Phillip Stinson whizzed us through town to our hotel. Bobby Holder was the manager of the hotel and Claudelle Griggs was his efficient secretary. After we had rested, we dressed for dinner and descended to the luxurious dining room. Among the score of attractive waitresses we noticed three familiar faces, Marlene Goebel, Joyce Greenwell, and Joan Hutchison. Our mouths water- ed when we saw the luscious meal prepared by the Chef Eugene Shelton. Following the meal we were entertained by Janis McCant playing the piano, Gayle Maddox and Chris Cassimus were vocalists. The next day we arrived in London. We were met by Richard Lee, who conducted us on a guided tour of the city. We stopped for a few minutes at Oxford University where we were pleasantly sur- prised to find Walter Dunnavent, an advanced music student, Jimmy Kelly who was studying oratory, and Jon Hall was majoring in psychology. Regretfully we left England. On the way across the channel to France we found the cause of a great deal of excitement to be the English Channel swim completed by Larry Murdock. His coach was Bill Holland. When we landed in Calais we went straight to Paris. While shopping we passed a department store. ln the window we were surprised to see Sue Gail Lee, Betty Gaye Hamilton, Louise Thrasher, and Joan Turner modeling the exquisite creations of George Thomas Seaton. On our visit to the Eiffel Tower we met another group of tourists. Among them were Bobby Cox and Opal Hudson who were honeymooning and Federal Judge Richard Penn and his legal staff Tommy Caddell and Charles Smith. They were accompanied by the American ambassador Marilyn McBath. On the way to Spain, we stopped at a tourist lodge in the Pyrenees, where we found the wealthy oil magnate Kendall Sively recuperating from a lung disorder. His valet and boon companion was Milton Herrin. Kendall told us about the Voice of America Broadcast which he heard weekly narrated by Mitchell Self. One of its recent programs was a motorcycle race won by Harvey Jeffers. The famous motorcycle was kept fit by Lloyd Copeland. Kendall said that his rapid recovery was due to the expert massage of Kenneth McDaniel ably assisted by James Anderson. We moved on to Madrid and arrived in time for the bullfights. George Davis was the most popular matador and Billy Allred was his picador. We crossed a lovely new bridge over the Ebro River. The bridge was engineered by Jimmy Hunter and William Hermes. From Spain we went to Africa where we visited a laudable mission station in the Congo, which was ably staffed by Stanley Clark, Millard Teal, Margaret Taylor, and Opal Garner. Following this visit we toured the Johannesburg Diamond Mines which were owned jointly by Otto Nebrig and Wayne Vaughn. Two of their operators were Doug- las Blevins and Gerald Standridge. Otto asked us many questions about the success of Sonny Ogle as head coach at Notre Dame. We told him that all the good reports he had heard were true as Sonny's team had been undefeated for five years. Our voyage back to America was uneventful ex- cept for the week we spent in the Bahamas. We enjoyed watching the deep sea diving of Kenneth Marion and Billy Wright. Although we enjoyed the trip, we were glad upon arriving in Decatur to slip back into regular rou- tine. The first stop was the bank. The president is Mary Louise Morris and her secretary is Anne Lois Ridgeway. At the tellers' windows we noticed Fay Lott, Mary Elizabeth Milam, and Patsy Moore. Also in the bank looking after financial matters were the housewives Faye Taylor, Myrtle Shingle- bar, Ruby Webb, and Patsy Storey. After such a long hard experience we decided to relax and try our luck at fishing. Of course we bought our minnows from Dora Clark at Clark's Fishery. Eleanor caught all the fish so we had to listen to her boast all the way home. Delicious fish makes the perfect end for a perfect story. When the Seven New Teachers Included ln Faculty At Decatur High School This Year We would like to acquaint the student body with our seven new teachers in this article and to welcome the teachers to Decatur High School. Mr. Leeman, the assistant principal, is a graduate of Hartselle High School. He attended college at Florence, Athens, and the Uni- versity of Alabama. He has his A. B., M. A., and B. S. degrees. He has taught twenty-two years in Morgan county and for the past six years has been Superintendent of Morgan County Schools. Here at Decatur High his du- ties are: registration of pupils, counciling, guidance, keeping at- tendance records, teaching two Senior social problems classes, and the over-all organization of the school. By this we know Mr. Leeman is a busy man, but when he has time he enjoys camping and fishing. His wife is a sec- ond grade teacher at Somerville Road School. Their thirteen- year-old daughter, Charlotte, is a seventh grade pupil here. Mrs. Wooten was born in De- catur. She, her husband, and Carol, their eleven-year-old daughter, have just recently moved back to Decatur. Mrs. Wooten got her B. A. degree at Judson College, where she ma- - Work Begins On '54 Year Book Work on the 1954 Golden Memories has already begun. The Senior Class elected part of its staff for the yearbook last May. They are: Editor, Ted Solo- mon, assistant editor, Betty Ha- zel Hamiltong and business man- ager, Roy Sudoff. With the assistance of Mrs. Harvey, the sponsor of the class, and Mr. Tanner, the representa- tive of the publishing company, the staff hopes to turn out one of the best yearbooks ever pub- lished here. To make it the best, everyone must have his picture in the annual this year! Dentist: Sorry, I'm out of gas: Girl in Chair: Good heavens.
