The Tennessee has been a wonderful mother, sometimes cruel, often menacing, but always mighty and watchful of her children, So that we might have food, she swept down rich mud, pay dirt, for our farm land, so that we might have power, her mighty rushing waters and sprawling network of dams have furnished us electricity, so that we might take our place among the leaders of the nation, she gave us manpower and that manpower has led and 'will continue to lead. We, thelchilclren of the Valley, face the future with a rich background of traditions-tradition richer than the Southern plantation owners who made their fortunes with King Cotton, oldert than the darkies whose chants and melodious voices once made the Tennessee echo with the music of the Old South. Now, as the South faces total war, the 'Valley of the Tennessee is making its contribution. lts tousle-haired youngsters who only yesterday fished for lazy mud-cat and fat perch in its deep streams are the same serious-minded, yet still soft-spoken, determined men who today drive deeper into Ger- many and tomorrow will advance steadily against the Japanese. ' The'ValIey today throbs with the drums of war and power. Tomorrow that power will be turned toward peace and the some rich, progressive life th at the Valley, her river, and her children have known when there was no war, when the South smiled proudly up at her Valley-the Valley of the Tennessee.
