SENIOR Ill HISTORY Now that we, the Class of '43, are about to graduate we look back over our twelve years of school and recall many fond meni- aries. ln l932, we started out in the various grammar schools of the city and in T938 came together as a class for the first time in Central High School. During our three years there, we attained high scholastic honors but had lots of fun too. ln l94O, we successfully presented the play, The Bashful Mr. Bobbs , under the direction of Miss Lucile Chenault. Finally that momentous day in September of l94l arrived---we entered Decatur Senior High School. That first year we organized our class as follows: President, James Monk, Vice-President, Martha Scales, Secretary, Robert Jones, Treasurer, Fletcher Eddens, and Sponsor, Miss Lillian Odom. In our Junior year, after electing Miss Aileen Pope as sponsor, we conducted a very successful magazine campaign. We then elected class officers. President, Pom Kyle, Vice-President, Carl Arantz, Secretary, Ann McEntire, and Treasurer, Horace Dry- den. Our last activity as a junior class was the very successful presentation of Flying High . When our senior year rolled around we quickly organized the class as follows: President, Carl Arantz, Vice-President, Hor- ace Dryden, Secretary, Peggy Wilds, Treas- urer, Margaret Whitmire, and Sponsor, Miss Mary Robertson. Our first activity was a magazine campaign in which we quickly reached our goal. We then made plans for the production of the '43 edition of Golden Memories and elected the staff, headed by Brad Bailey as editor. After much good-natured debate we next selected class rings and invitations. Thus is the history of the Class of '43 up to date. Soon we will graduate to go our separate ways-some of us to college, others to work, and still others into the armed forces. But wherever our paths may lead, we shall always keep bright in our hearts many golden memories of our high school days. KEY TO BABY PICTURES l. Ben Teal and Helen Kitchens . . . 2. We learned to say our ABC's and to add and subtract. Then after six years of hard labor Mr. Benson gave us our diplomas in the auditorium at River- side, certifying that we had successfully completed our first six years of school and were ready for junior high school. Another school-and what a thrill we thought that would be! The first year we were nothing but rats , as the older stu- dents always called the freshmen. The next year, when we were in the eighth grade, we didn't feel quite so bad, and by our last year, when we were all working to publish the Junior News and to get it out every Friday morning, we had come to love Central and dreaded the thoughts of going to another school. Once again, how- ever, the time came, and Mr. Riley gave us our diplomas in the newly remodeled gym- nasium of the school. Then we were sophomores, and were we proud! Our first year in Riverside we elected Miss Poer as our sponsor. Under her leadership and that of our officers-Ned Anderson, Lillian Houser, and Martha Ann Gregg, we had a most successful magazine campaign, and purchased a S75 War Bond, which we gave to the school. Now that we are iuniors we have had another successful magazine campaign with Miss Garrett as our sponsor, John Lyle, president, Gil Crane, vice-president, Lillian Hauser, secretary, and Elmer Loyd, Jr., treasurer. We feel that we owe our success as a class to all our teachers from grammar school, Central, and Riverside and to Doc , who has been our constant guide the past two years. i -Q 7 . f L, VV V V ' .' x 1 V311 ' .1 ,i Q rg 1' 1 J -vt! 5 Q 4 I 'Q '3'l'fi .7 'V M, 'SQ' A .pr4.'f1' - Q ifiE 'x? ffm , x ,EL V in A V 9 1 x f ff' 3 ' ' Qu 1. No sooner had we entered than we knew our search was ended, for the first day was spent in learning that c-a-t spells cat. Armed with this amazing fact, we trudged homeward, our heads heavy with the never- to-be-forgotten memories of our first day at school. As the days passed, we began to acquire additional information and by the time we had reached the sixth grade we all felt capable of joining the Quiz Kids. ln September of I938, we entered Cen- tral High and like all other rats , our chief ambition was to be junior threes. At last the great day came! It was our turn to rule the roost and look down our noses at the poor green freshman. This we did with great enthusiasm. As junior threes we found it necessary to assume many responsibilities. The members of our class published The Junior News , the bi-weekly paper sponsored by Miss Frances Nungester. When we were called upon for entertain- ment, we responded with Toby Helps Out a comedy in three acts. And so time passed until today we find ourselves senior ones at Decatur Senior High School. Our first week here was an end- less haze of schedules, classes, and unfa- miliar facesg but we soon became acclimated and were ready to choose our officers. For president we chose Judson Hawthorne, for vice-president, John Hamilton, secretary- treasurer, James Carl Osborn. As our spon- sor we elected Miss Poer, and with her help we are well on our way to a successful high school career. ir KEY TO SNAPS I. Don't run off . . . 2. Off guard . . . 3.
