Brown as instructor. Limited to seniors the two classes have a gay informolity that helps to create the atmosphere of the stage. The first principles of dramatic art are acquired, as well as those of public speaking and debating. Besides the experience a student gets in acting and producing plays, he also loses self-consciousness in address- ing an audience. That emphasis is not right. Do it againln Mrs. Brown says as she listens intently to ci student reading on the stage. Always first to volunteer, S. Ellner mounts the steps to read her selection. The glove is thrown, the leap is made as these students enact The Glove and the Lion for the members of the class. C. Gaines, VV. Kemmitzer, F. Petty, J. Pitts, and F. Cshenault take time out between readings to recuperate. Swords flash cis l-loratius defends the bridge. lvl. Worley, E. Little, L. Reeves, and H. Cobb dramatize this famous deed. MU .. Miss Aileen Pope, instructor in this section of our curriculum, teaches first and second year French and second and third year Latin. A study is made of the lives and customs ot the early Romans and the influence their culture and language have upon our civilization today. In the French classes, when students have become relatively familiar with the mechanics of the tongue, they probe into French literature, art, and government in order to understand ond appreciate the people ot that nation, This department provides a cultural background that is ot as much value as the lcnowf ledge ofthe language itselt. Each notebook Miss Pope grades holds new interests and new facts, J. Weaver tells us that French is interesting. Try it. in the sentence she writes on the board. Miss Pope shows members ot the Virgil class a bust ot this famous poet. What charming French city do you prefer? S, L, Meinhart and B. B. Beatty can show you iust where to find it. TAGE TRUTTER To be or not to be f- members of this club wander up and down the halls of school with far-away looks in their eyes and recite with varying degrees of emotion these famous lines. The group is organized from the dramatics classes and has been in existence since I932. They meet twice a month in the auditorium where their business is conducted and pro- grams are presented to give the members in- formation about drama, acting, and how to be at ease before an audience. Each year the club has some worth-while undertaking which they sponsor. This year's project was to help in purchasing longeneeded scenery for the stage, This is a great benefit to the whole school and will remain useful for years to came. Pag Toward the end of this semester the club held a sports banquet. Leaving their dra- matic art behind, they motored outside the city limits and enjoyed the infcrmality of the occasion. Mrs, Brown, the sponsor, is a pro- motor of good will and fun as well as an excellent dramatics instructor and under her direction all the group's activities are affairs of interest and entertainment. For this year they chose as president, Frank Richards, vice-president, Madge Eustace, sec' retary, Eugenia Hodges, treasurer, Marie Lconey, and scribe, Faye Lewis. Since this club is a strongehold of laughter and good cheer the students of high school feel fortunate in having it as one of their or- ganizations ancl hope that it will never change in spirit or endeavor. Page Forty-nrm' GLEE CLUB The students' desire tor more school music was answered in part this year by the organ- ization of a long-hoped-for Glee Club. Under the able supervision of Mr. Kenneth Hennessy it has proved most successful. A large group of interested students ap- peared on the day of organization. The first step was a voice test given to each individual in order to place him in the proper section. Then came an extended study of the funda- mentals ot vocalization, including scales, har- mony, and sight-reading. All this was neces- sary before the club was ready to make a public appearance. One of the mcst enjoyable as well as worth- while projects the club undertook during the year was that of singing carols a few nights before Christmas. Armed with candles and hymn-books they carried out their plans and brought happiness and cheer to many shut-ins. Part ot the membership dues was used to pay for the placing of the picture in our Golden Memories . The remainder of the money went for the purchase of music books which are to become the property of the club itself. Although the Glee Club is but one year old, it shows promise of becoming one of the most helpful and constructive clubs in school. to Right, First Row: M. Buchanan, J. Wohl, B. B. Beatty, N. C. They have made a distinct place tor themselves both in our school and in the community. Theirs is a dual purpose: to maintain ci high standard ot ethical conduct among its member- ship, and to practice the art of public speak- ing. To become ci Lambda Pi Sigma one must be able to qualify in religious interests and per- sonal habits. Neophytes pass through a period ot rigid testing before they are admitted to the rank of tull-fledged brotherhood. Mr. Carlton Kelly organized the fraternity in T929 and has been its faculty adviser since that time. The Decatur Rotary Club has re' cently accepted the sponsorship ot the club, an honor which is highly appreciated by its mem, bers. Olticers tor V939-40 are the following: grandmaster, Leon Reeves, assistant grandmas- ter, NN. T. Jordan, Jr., secretory, Edgar Selt, treasurer, James Hoseapple, sergeant-aux- arms, Harold Lichtenstein, chaplain, Williaiit Reed, and scribe, Gilbert Stewart. During this year, Lambda Pi Sigma has been outstanding in its activities. Members have appeared in public debates both in our school ond in other schools nearby. They have made speeches before civic groups and over our local raftio station. In every way Lanfbda Pi Sigma has tried to live up to the purpose and high ideals for which it was founded, Page Fifty-uilm ' fa4 .. .,. u vig k A , . 6 P In 4 W '-9. What a record! This football season was the pride and ioy of Decatur, Crowds swarmed to Benson Field despite rains and blustery nights. The town turned out in its best regalia to watch history being made on the Raiders' grid- iron. The faint aroma of pop corn added spirit and zest to the colorful atmosphere. Enthusiastic cheers rose from both grand- stands and excited faces peered over the sidelines. The thrill of the first kick-off was surpassed only by the grandness of a touch- down. The score board told stories of vic- tory and success while a throng of specta- tors praised the Red Raiders' record. On Friday, September 29, l939, De- catur's Raiders opened the season by play- ing Jacksonville High School. Our boys made six touchdowns and three extra points, while the Jacksonville squad failed to score. A week later the strong Huntsville team beat the Raiders l3 points. Joe Bradley, our third opponent, gave the Decatur sub- stitutes a chance to see service. When the whistle blew the Red and Black eleven had four winning touchdowns. In the uncertain game with Cullman, Decatur made three touchdowns in the last quarter and finished with a score of 39-O. Athens, the Raiders' next victim, went down in defeat to the tune of 25-O. Then on our schedule came Florence. The Raid- ers, playing hard ball, did all the goal- crossing and made 39 points. On November lO Elkmont fell before the strong Decatur team with the latter making an appreciated 31. The Signs above were placed on our fair campus by Huntsville fans before our game with them. Here is a picture at our now-famous gate flooded with foot- ball advocates. While below, O. D. Tucker and S, Gamble watch eagerly as Decatur scores another touchdown. Pane Sixty-av Wm, am cw Saw .... They played with pep and vigor, but their lock of experience kept them from running up scores high enough to beat the opponents. Despite the team's bad record, we are proud of them because they are all iuniors and sophomores and have never played on a regular team before. It's only the beginning, folks. Just think what our record will be next year when the same boys pound the hardwood, Since they gained experience this year, we are looking forward to several Decatur players making the all country team in '4l. They always put up a good fight and never stopped trying until the final whistle had blown. ln view of this fact we know that the following ten boys are true basketballers.
