', Senror Class l-llstory In the fall of 1929 two important events took place A group of frightened youngsters entered Central High School only to be dubbed by upperclassmen with the surprisingly suitable title of rats To say that we were driven to our studies would not do Justice to the situation At the end of the first semester we were ac tually panting for breath And thus we struggled on rarely faltering because of the tmely a1d of Miss Penn Miss Ward Miss Rhinehart Mrs Clark Mr Wheat and the others The other important happening of that auspicious year was the enrollment of a group of students equally as frightened at Riverside High School If the truth were told I expect this group was found to have more fertile brains than those of Central High so Miss Smith Miss Russell and Mrs Garren were not quite so burdened with their tasks At length both classes so far ascended the scale of learning as to be proudly called umor III s or that hated word freshmen At this point both groups be gan to appear in classes of the teachers in sen1or high school At Central these were Miss Eich Mr Taylor Miss Pope Miss Reeder and Mr Fuller At River Then came senior high We felt that now we really were up in the world The sophomore class at Riverside boasted forty members At Central we had a large number also With the beginning of our jumor year came the consolidation of the two schools into the Decatur Senior High School Miss Usscry was our sponsor Dur ing that year we put on a play The Spanish Onion The production of this play uncovered heretofore dormant talent among our classmates There were one hun dred twenty four of us and we firmly believed ourselx cs to be more important than the seniors The main objectives of our senior tear have b cn to publish an annual and to graduate Toward these two thmgs we have constantly strived With the aid of our patient sponsor Miss Ussery W have put on two magazine campaigns and have sponsored several picture shows XVe have also sponsored the production of Romeo and Juliet and The Merchant of Venice by the Avon Players One sen1or play has already been presented and we are planning to put on another And now as we stand one hundred eight in number ready to FCCCIVC our dt plomas we can truly say that the consolidation of the two high schools has proved 1 great blessing to the class of 1935 FRANCES ANNE GREEN Hzstorzan THE GOLDEN MEMORIES 1303 f 0 . . . - er as A . . . 1 L 3 I .
