Over the loud speaker a voice returned us sharply to reality. The President of the United States is dead. After the awful silence of unbearable shock, each returned to his own thoughts. Friday. November 22. had dawned clear and pleasant in Dallas. A colorful presidential procession had moved gai- ly through the Texas city. Meanwhile. fifth hour classes had progressed nor- mally in Stephen Decatur High School. Then at 12:52 p.m. Mr. Fox's voice had resounded over the speaker. President Kennedy has just been shot. As every- one had waited and listened. further word had come. The President has been rushed to Parkland Hospital. At last, as we had feared. had come the fatal announcement. Students seemed to move mechanical- ly through the long afternoon classes. Many were in tears: all were silent. At the end of the day. we paused for a period of silent meditation to pay trib- ute to an American leader who had been assassinated. Throughout the next few days we watched TV broadcasts of history in the making. including the funeral pro- cession with the six white horses drawing the caisson which bore the casket, followed by the riderless horse: the interment in Arlington National Cemetery: and the lighting of the etern- al flame. But that shock was not enough. We also witnessed the murder of the accused assassin. All of these terrifying events made up some seven- ty-two hours of unforgettable memories in the year of 1963. , i -fwz'-HBV P ,Ugg nscswbatvzgas iienlggx P . - 1, sxnivfzfmlxii Critically K 0?
