Her home is in the midst of the famous tulip country that extends from Leden to Haarlem. Holland, often called the Netherlands, is a small country about the size of Connecticut and Massa- chusetts combined. Large dikes have been built to hold back the North Sea, while countless Windmills help to pump Water from this tiny land. Dea arrived in America in early August. After the first six weeks, it was awarded to the homeroom with the highest grade average, but after the remaining six weeks' periods, it was awarded to the homeroom with the highest percentage ct improvement. THE EMBLEM The emblem of the National Honor Society is the keystone and flaming torch, The keystone bears at its base the letters L, and which stand for the four cardinal principles of its organization-scholarship, leadership, char- acter, and service. As the keystone is placed by the builder to hold the perfect arch in perpetual stability, so the structure of our education must be held firm and true to the purposes of life by the virtues represented in this symbol. Scholarship is the power of the mind to dispel ignorance and superstition through scientific investigation. Leadership is the power of personality that blazes the trail for man's upward climb. Char- acter, the composite of all the common virtues, sets the seal of righteousness upon our every endeavor. Service is the begin- ning and end of our education-the altar of unselfishness from which Gods blessings are bestowed upon men. Thus the key- stone symbolizes the high ideals of our society. The flaming torch is the emblem of our purpose. To bear forward the searching light of truth, to lead that others may follow in the light, to keep burning in our school a high ambition for the enduring values of life-these purposes are symbolized by the torch. if 'WH Room 221, the Decanois Staff. won the honor plaque for the first six weeks. 150 ,, , NATIONAL HCNOR SGCIETY INDLICTION MARCH 1. 1963 PROGRAM Prelude Processional lntroduction . . . . . .
