t-1Ei?3llil :I5fQh'lST.Qll.U' PIQIECQS--1 Debate This past year has seen the renewal of a. forin of activity that was fornierly Decatur's niain stock-in-trade. Mr. Hubbart was responsible for the organization of the teanis, and he lined up some interesting de- bates. The first debate scheduled was with Gibson City, dated for Deceni- ber 23. After a great deal of trying-out, John Robbins, John Ditto, Denise Hugenburger, Royal McClelland, Edwin J okisch, and Gertrude Redwitz were picked to argue for Decatur, on the question Resolved: that all innnigration into the United States be prohibited for a period of tive yearsf' Our affirmative four, consisting of Robbins, McClelland, and Hugenburger, with Davenport as alternate, worked niightily, and drew a unanimous decision from the judges. The negative team, however, was not so fortunate and was beaten 2 to 1. Ditto, Jokiseh, and Red- witz, with Heffernan as alternate, inade the trip to Gibson City. The same two teains debated the saine question with University High on January 13, and drew two 2 to 1 decisions. The last debate on the schedule was a triple debate. Due to the fact that the senior play interfered with the old two teams, new try- outs were held. The teains picked were: negative, Otto Sutterer, Syril Hastiiigs, and J. B. Austin: atiirinative, Mary Heffernan, Frank Shef- tler, and Robert lYayne. The negative teani went to Pontiac where it was defeated 0 to 3. The atiirniative teani debated University High and was also defeated 0 to 23. The question debated was Resolved: that the federal governinent own and operate the coal ininesf' It is hoped that the iinpetus given this year to debate will carry over into next year so that Decatur will again attain the high position that she once held in this line. Although there is a great deal of hard work for the static, it does not seem hard because it is so engrossing. The staff of this year has been unusually good. It is made up of those who write well, and those who take an aetiye part in school life. At no time has the staff failed to get out an issue on time. This shows that the mainstay of the organization is eo-operation. Yet, if it had not been for the timely advice and help of the staff advisors, our little literary ship might have run aground months ago. I-V'-,Q?3IliEiQfQhlISl'-'flfltfl klgizzgigljfgl Poster Club The Poster Club, organized in the high school in 1918, has proved an essential factor in the artistic life of the school. This club makes posters for the various activities, current movements, and drives. The art of poster making and lettering are studied in the club meetings. All exhibits at the Art Institute are visited by the society. The club meets regularly on the first and third lllednesdays of each month during the academic year. The work of this club has al- ways proved eminently successful. Orpheus Orpheus is the musical society of the high school. To be a mem- ber, the student must have an interest in music, and give an evidence of this interest. A program is given by the students once a month. From time to time, the Conservatory and the Decatur Musical College send tal- ented pupils and teachers to appear before the club. This outside talent adds much to our programs. However, the main object of this club is to give the students an opportunity to appear before the public. Our subject for the past year has been the Opera. The members have made Very thorough preparation for the programs, and the work has been extremely interesting. It is hoped that under the lead- ership of our advisor, Miss Louise Bear, the following years will be as helpful and interesting as has been this last Year.
