This year DHS's Homecoming had its share of disappointments. We were not allowed to have the traditional pep rally on the square. We were having a losing streak, and of course the price of mums in- creased. Despite all this, students kept their Eagle Spirit glowing, especially when we learned that we were going to have a bonfire for the first time in three years. To find out how much students enjoyed homecoming, we asked a few questions. Ps Atv-' ff! . V..-4 ...Q ' :! I' , jvy. ,V 1 ,.,.'.,.-.. What about another cheer! says julie Waller. E. Getting the footwork right is an important part of cheerleading. Brandy Savage is making sure her feet are in gear. 4. g '10, ' i p 1l? 4,,, -c, a f f ' M srlt , t 1 Through the years cheerleading, which started out by just supporting teams by doing yells, has become a sport in itself. Each year competitions are held to determine the best squad in the nation. Don't let the cheerleaders' smiling faces and bouncy attitudes fool you, cheerleading is a lot of work. Right after elections, the cheerleaders start to work for next years season. Raising money for uniforms, which cost about 35300, and supplies become an im- portant part of the work. During the summer, the cheerleaders spend hours out in the hot sun practicing for evalua- tion. Also during the summer, signs are painted and 2-a-days begin, so that means serving cool-aid. As you can see, cheerleading is a lot of work but the 12 girls that make up the l.V. and varsity squads love supporting the mighty Decatur Eagles. However, the Eagles lacked the one quality that turns the good teams into great ones. That quality was luck. The opening game with Boyd was a sign of things to come as the Eagles let an eight point lead slip away in the last few minutes and lost 14-8. After a scoreless tie with Olney, Decatur led Springtown, a team which would end the year undefeated, 17-7 with just minutes to play, but once again victory eluded the Eagles as Decatur mistakes paved the way for a Springtown win. Decatur then suffered two more heart breaking losses to Southlake Carroll and Graham to end non-district play with a disappointing O-4-1 record. The Eagles opened league play with a tough loss to district favorite Iowa Park, but then the Blue and White got on a roll. And roll they did. After physically whipping Bridgeport 18-7, the Eagles ripped jacksboro 48-14 and shut out Bowie 21-0 to set up a playoff showdown with Breckenridge. Needing a win by 13 points for the district championship the Eagles played brilliantly and took a 17-3 lead into the fourth quarter. But then lady luck once again took a wicked turn against the Eagles as Breckenridge rallied for 15 f points on two fourth down TD passes and a two point conversion with 20 seconds remaining. Decatur lost 18-1 7 to end a disappointing and frustrating year. SS xx,-an f ng. p MEM ws - f - K 3, - ' . im I 3 Q -'ff if if fr gg ? Th B Annllill Staff No Small Affall' 8 5NX uv'f l W ,V ' 1. f wif W W Q l The Annual Staff for the l986-l987 school year are Cfrom previous pagel Kristy Seal, in lower left hand corner, jeannie Fiel, sitting on yearbook, julie Perkins, climbing, Ken- dra Burnett, lower right hand corner, Mary lolley, sitting guru style by camera, Pam Conner and Buffy McCarley in front of camera, Kim Stone, to their right, johnna Britt, to her right, jerry Jennings in air, Car- rie Doss, on top of camera, Janelle Luker, upper left hand corner, and Trista Opper- mann, on film canister. This year the annual staff tried to break the mold of earlier yearbooks by being a little strange. The theme is Dare to be Dif- ferent and we tried to. We wanted to try new things and test our own ideas. We believe that this yearbook will help everyone remember the I986-87 school year. An established truth that we want to shatter is the idea that annual staff is a pass-off-class or an easy A . That's definitely not true. We worked hard to meet each deadline and produce quality work. Each page in this book was carefully thought out and planned. We didn't want to just throw something together and hope for the best. The staff would like to thank the local newspapers for their pictures. We'd also like to thank the businesses who bought ads and each student who purchased an annual. No one summed up our high school career better than she: From the Future Graduate Soon, and way too soon really, I will have to meet the world, because four years of high school doesn't last forever, and has passed too quickly. Time has passed so quickly, from the first time I saw you 'til now, We have been the best of friends throughout the years. Soon we'lI be parting, not just as friends, but as men and women bound for college, career, and life. Our achievements that we have made together and alone Linger with sad and happy justification, And sometimes bring tears. l'll be leaving a life l've known for a decade and light years, This moment will be sorrowful, yet heart-warming, When the crowd applauds and cheers as one after another is dubbed with a degree. 'Tis true this night shall be remembered and should be happy- But for me, a night of tears, Because each of us must find our own way, And have remembrance of the years. Good luck and God abide, Lord help us and be by our side. For the class of '87 and my senior friends and junior friends, sophomore and freshman friends-I thank you for this moment, and I'll miss you. Don't forget me when l'm gone. October 1, 1986 Karen Care Bear Phillips All of us will miss you, Karen, and we'll never forget. 139 -Q 1 M' i 5 V13 BHWWL Rynearson Home Center 1304 Hwy. 51 South Phone: 627-5650 Decatur, Texas giggle READ Custoglcllzfggg Jwelelg Decatur Plaza u C H P.o. sox 659 Decatur, Texas 76234 l817l 627-7144 Hardware Paint Plumbing Sporting Electrical Goods Housewares Tools Wallpaper Lawn and and Cabinets Garden W Q55 'L Wise Electric . , L 324 7 in 7 B-0 Bl Co-Op Inc.
