And although they tried hard, they couldn't live up to those unreasonable expectations. Early triumph was followed by let- down as the reality of being in one of Texas' toughest GA football districts set in. The Eagles compiled an unexpected- ly good, 7-3 season record, but with Vernon and Iowa Park down from 4A ranks, couldn't do better than 2-3 in district 4-SA. Early predictions had Decatur in for a lackluster season, but by the time district play had rolled around, the Eagles had defeated five opponents. And they made it six straight by stop- ping Bridgeport in the district opener. Sports 83 A. Phi Bishop a I Luker struggles for an Eagle first down as Scott Oates, Kevin Downe, Sam nd Derrick Boyd look on. B. Tony Meador, Kevin Downe and Marty Mooney celebrate another Eagle victory. 84 Sports Eagles win first six Decatur's non-district victims included Boyd, Olney, Jacksboro, Graham and Breckenridge. lronically, both Graham and Breckenridge made shortlived trips to the playoffs, to be shot down by Iowa Park and Vernon, the expected winners in 4-SA. Actually, Springtown, Iowa Park ond Ver- non had tied for first place. A coin toss decided who would advance. Then came two losses and a controversy over Head Coach Bobby Ac- tkinson's speaking his mind. Decatur lost to Iowa Park, then arch-rival Spr- ingtown. Actkinson's comments to the press set some fans and parents ablaze, although several players sent a letter to the MESSENGER in support of their coach. The Eagles' slim hopes for a second-place finish revived after they defeated Bowie, but those dreams flickered and died on a cold November night in far-away Vernon. But in football, there's always next year, and Decatur returns a crop of players who showed considerable talent in a season when they were predicted to go nowhere . . . and fooled the predictors. They opened the season with a loss to a highly-ranked Northwest squad. The Eagles then reeled off five straight wins before a loss to top- ranked Krum. The highlight predistrict play was winning the Eagle Invitational Tournament. Decatur finished preseason play with a vic- tory over Northwest. The Eagles started their district play with a loss to Bridgeport. Decatur then defeated Bowie and Springtown before losing in over- time at Vernon. The Eagles rebounded with district wins over lowa Park and Bridgeport. A hard-fought, triple-overtime loss at Bowie hurt the team's chance for a share of the district title. This was follow- ed by a loss to Vernon sandwiched between wins over Springtown and lowa Park. Decatur finished 17-10 on the year with a 6-4 district record, giving them third place. It was a season of near misses and disappointments for the six senior cagers as they ended the season with a 17-10 record. The team tasted disappointment early, losing the title game in the Decatur tourney to Lake Dallas 51-48. This disappointment followed the team throughout district play. Facing the defending state champions in the first district outing, the Lady Eagles managed to lead at the end of each quarter only to let Vernon tie the score at the final buzzer. The Eagle team lost 57-54 in overtime. A slow start plagued the team against Iowa Park, and the Hawks led the first half. The Lady Eagles rallied to tie the game at the end of the third quarter only to fall behind 43-40. The team's first district win came against Bridgeport. The Lady Eagles held a 39-19 lead at the half and were able to stifle a third-quarter Bridgeport ral- ly to win 69-57. Fresh from their first district win, they managed to outscore the Bowie Jackrabbits for the first half. This edge disappeared in the third quarter when the Decatur team could only put four points on the board. Bowie went on to defeat Decatur 54-47. Bouncing back from that defeat, the Eagle team took an early lead against Springtown, winning 62-53. The cagers continued their win-loss pattern as they came back to edge Iowa Park 52-46. The Lady Eagles failed to maintain their winning streak the remainder of the season as Bridgeport revenged their loss by halting a Decatur comeback and winning 52-47. This was followed by a 56-43 loss to Bowie. After leading at the half, the Lady Eagles lost the game at the free-throw line the third quarter as Bowie put in 24 of 32 shots compared to Decatur's 3 of 8. The season ended with a 53-41 loss to the Porkies at Springtown, giving the cagers a 1-4 record for the second half of district and a 17-10 season record.
