R Wa School akes pproved List With enrollment up to 1342 students in the school district, the school board, under the direction of Neal Sattawhite, had its hands full with the problems of overcrowding and taxes. For the first time since 1968, the Decatur school system was fully accred- ited with no qualifications from the Texas Education Agency. The school system had been on advised status because of some flaw in the district's programs or facilities, primarily be- cause of the conditions of the junior High gym. This year the gym was completely renovated. The board also established a five year plan for improvement in several other departments. t Ts ,bw . Bud Enis, former principal of Holliday, took over the duties of principal at DI-IS. Because of this increase in students, Mr. Enis saw his first year plagued with the usual pro- blems, plus new problems of over- crowding and material shortages. A strong believer in the stu- dent, and in student discipline, Mr. Enis established a system which allowed the students some freedom, but helped the school to run in an orderly fashion. E Q E 2 7e A r r Injuries Plague Football Team The Injured List -a tally of casualities before, during, and after a football game-continually lengthened as the 76-77 season progressed. As a result, the Varsity Football team suffered as much as the indi- vidual players. When the season began, 25 healthy, strong players suited out. But by the end of the season, the team had been reduced to only 18 players. Muscle injuries, eye injuries, knee injuries, shoulder injuries, and even car wreck injuries became well-known. But the team, consisting of only three returning senior starters with the help of determination, did not disappoint the fans. at Altogether, footbal1 was a good word at D.H.S. as the Varsity finished with a season record of 6-4, the j.V. with 4-6, and the Fresh- man with 9-0-1, which gave them the district championship. On the average, air conditioning accounts for about half of summertime electric bills. Here are ways you can hold down the cost of air conditioning and still enjoy its comfort. Central Systems 1. Set thermostat on 780, or higher, during the summer. Turn unit off if you'll be away from home several days. Keep equipment at top operating efficiency. Have it checked seasonally by qualified serviceman. Check filter every 30 days. Dirty filters cause equipment to use excessive electricity. lf filter is permanent, clean by manufacturer's directionsg if it's disposable, it should be replaced when dirty. Keep furniture, draperies away from air outlets and returns. Clean grills often. Close draperies and blinds to keep out direct sunlight. Keep fireplace damper closed. Proper home insulation keeps the heat out, cuts energy use. Insulation questions? Call TP8.L. Shade on roof and walls can reduce energy needed to cool. But trim trees, shrubs away from outside compressor unit. Keep it free of leaves, debris. If air flow is blocked, unit uses more energy. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Weatherstrip doors and windowsg caulk cracks to prevent drafts and cool air loss. 10. Keep windows closed. Open outside doors as little as possible. Window Units Follow above suggestions, plus these: Buy units with highest energy efficiency ratio QEERJ. Uses less electricity to cool. If EER is not on sales tag, ask for it orfigure it yourself. Divide wattage into t'BTU capacity. Both figures are on unit. Place unit where it'll get as little direct sun as possible. Aim air outlets at lower half of doorway to next room to allow warm air from that room to enter at the doortop for recooling, recirculation. Never vent air conditioner into garage. Ventilation is usually too poor fortop performance of your unit. Conserve electricity and you help conserve one or more of the fuels needed to produce it. Conserve fuels and you help assure that there will be enough to meet essential needs for electricity in the future. When you pass a TP8tL office, warehouse, generating plant or other facility, you'll see that we've turned off all non-essential lighting. And, in as many other ways as possible, TP8lL is reducing its own uses of electricity. lf you would like additional information on conserving electricity, call the Customer Service Representative in the TP8lL Office. 11. 12. 13. 14.
