I have trained all my days to protect you to give you comfort in your time of need. I have watched my loved ones cry on the pier, I have shed a tear at the pain and sacrifice they share with me. May their sacrifice not go unnoticed. But I do it for a greater cause, I don ' t do it for the money; I don ' t do it for the medals or the benefits. I do it for the promise I made to you. A promise to keep our land free from all evils. A promise to give your family a peace of mind. And your children a future with no fear. This book is filled with all of our memories some good, some bad, but all for the cause. It ' s filled with memories of our sleepless nights, few port visits and great shipmates. It ' s filled with the pain of being away and tears for our fallen shipmates. We did our job and we are proud of it. But when the time came we were properly relieved to go home to our loved ones The ones we sacrificed the most for. Enjoy our memories. We are your DECATUR Sailors Written by: 0S2(SW) Aumack 03 Qj o CD E o nipmates Operation Enduring Freedom (2001-2002) s hipmates, I can ' t express how proud I am of you and what you accomplished these past seven months. On November 12, 2001 we deployed two months ahead of schedule to join the Global War Against Terrorism and support OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. We did that and more. We guarded the Amphibious Ready Groups off the coast of Pakistan, escorted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, conducted Leadership Interdiction and Maritime Interception Operations including numerous boardings, worked with many foreign Navies, and provided presence, stability, and support for the birth of the world ' s newest nation. East Timor. Our success in each of these missions was due to a total team effort - outstanding technicians, operators, cooks, engineers, etc. striving to achieve a common goal. We were combat ready and the Battle Group could always count on DECATUR to be timely, accurate, and reliable with even the toughest tasks. You are our nation ' s and Navy ' s finest and I am thankful and proud to have sailed with you on this different and historic deployment as your Captain. This deployment was a short-notice call to service where our job was to take the fight to the terrorists, disrupt their planning and organization, capture them if possible, and deter their escape by sea, among others. We did that and still found time to enjoy some very nice places around the world representing our Navy and country. I hope that you enjoy the many faces and places highlighted in this cruise book. It ' s a compilation of Sailors at war, relaxing at sea, working hard, playing, enjoying liberty, and showing the Flag - memories for a career and a lifetime. MERCADO COMMANDING OFFICER CDR Vic Mercado was bom in Portsmouth, Virginia on February 20, 1961. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in May 1983 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Computer Science. His first assignment after Surface Warfare Officers School in Coronado, California was Missile Fire Control Officer and later Combat Information Center Officer in USS LEFTWICH (DD 984). Next, he served as the Damage Control Assistant in USS VALLEY FORGE (CG 50) where he participated in the re-flagged Kuwaiti oil tanker escort operations in the Arabian Gulf. Rotating ashore, CDR Mercado earned a Master of Science in Systems Technology in Joint Command, Control and Communications from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, completed Department Head School with distinction, and returned to sea as the Weapons Officer and Combat Systems Officer in USS ANTIETAM (CG 54). During a 40 month tour in ANTIETAM, he oversaw the first ever installation, test, evaluation and deployment of the Joint Tactical Information Distribution System (JTIDS) with the CARL VINSON Battle Group. Additionally, during the deployment, he assisted in the enforcement of the no-fly zone over southern Iraq in support of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH. CDR Mercado s most recent sea assignment was with the Forward Deployed Naval Force as Executive Officer in USS CURTIS WILBUR (DDG 54) homeported in Yokosuka, Japan. His most notable accomplishments during this tour were the planning and execution of CURTIS WILBUR ' s homeport shift from San Diego to Japan and deployment with the INDEPENDENCE Battle Group as the Air Warfare Commander. CDR Mercado ' s significant shore assignments include Washington D.C. tours with the Navy ' s engineering and acquisition community, the Navy Staff, and as a Congressional Fellow. He was the Command. Control, Communications and Intelligence (C3I) Warfare Systems Engineering Manager for the AEGIS Program Manager (PMS 400) and served as an Action Officer and as the Vice Director, Navy Staff for Staff Operations and Special Events (N09BX) on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. Prior to reporting to DECATUR, he served as the National Defense Legislative Fellow for Senator Edward M. Kennedy, the Ranking Member on the Senate Armed Services Seapower Subcommittee in the 106th Congress. CDR Mercado ' s decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, four Navy Commendation Medals, three Navy Achievement Medals and various individual and unit campaign medals. He is a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College (ACSC) at Air University in Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama and is also a former Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Shiphandler of the Year award winner. CDR Mercado is married to the former Ms. Suzane Balan. They have two children - Daniel (12) and Melinda (9) and call Oxnard, California home. LCDR MICHAEL L. BENO EXECUTIVE OFFICER LCDR Mike Beno was born in Las Vegas, NV on November 18, 1966. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. Upon completion of the Surface Warfare Officer School Division Officer Course he reported to USS WILLIAM H. STANDLEY (CG 32) and served as Electronic Warfare Officer, Naviga- tor, and Administrative Officer. Ashore, Lieutenant Commander Beno attended the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA where he earned a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. I Returning to sea, he served as Operations Officer in USS BARRY (DDG 52) and as Assistant Sur- face Operations Officer for Commander Carrier Group EIGHT (THEODORE ROOSEVELT Battlegroup). LCDR Beno graduated from the U.S. Army Com- mand General Staff College, FT Leavenworth, KS in 2001 . His personal decorations include three 2 Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals Ji4 and the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He is married to the former Carmen Nicomedez. The couple has a five year old son. CMDCM NORMAN PRETLOW COMMAND MASTER CHIEF Master Chief Pretlow was born in Baltimore, Maryland on November 22, 1964. He entered the Navy in June 1982 and attended recruit training at Great Lakes, Illinois. Master Chief Pretlow ' s sea duty assignments include: USS DURHAM (LKA 114), CAPE COD (AD43), USS CLEVELAND (LPD 7), and USS KINKAID (DD 965). His shore assignments include: Recruit Training Command San Diego as a Recruit Company Commander (RCC) and Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois as Recruit Division Commander (RDC). He attended Instructor Training and both Recruit Company Commander and Recruit Division Commander C Schools. Adams 8 Stephen Decatur 1779-1820 Our hero dies, and yet his name emblazoned On the naval role of fame Shall live till yonder bright star to seamen dear Shall cease to brighten the northern sphere Till winds no more shall rage nor fires roar And Freedoms sun shall rise and set no more. ( {C : CA ccCn, This is just one verse from one of the poems written following the tragic death of Commodore Stephen Decatur on March 22, 1820. What is it about the man that inspired such words? Heroism, Charismatic leadership, Patriotism, Honor and total devotion to his country, and bravery in battle where some of the things that defined who Stephen Decatur was. Decatur was only 41 years old at the time of his death. Stephen Decatur ' s first moment of glory was in 1804 were he led 74 men aboard The Intrepid into Tripoli harbor and burned the captured American Frigate The Philadelphia. Within 10 minutes of the encounters beginning. The Philadelphia Has ablaze. For his efforts he received his commission to the rank of Captain. In February 1808, he was appointed a member of the court martial that tried Com. James Barron for surrendering his ship to the British man-of-war Leopard. In The War of 1812, while in command of the frigate. The United States, Decatur and his crew defeated the British Frigate, The Macedonian, and brought her back to the United States where she was refitted and commissioned in the American Navy. Following the War of 1812, Decatur obtained treaties from Tripoli and the Pirates of the Barbary Coast which eliminated the United Sta tes from paying tributes for safe passage. As a member of the Navy Commissioners, Decatur made remarks against Com. Barron who then challenged him to a dual, which in those days was how men of honor settled disputes. And so it was that his naval career ended as heroicly as it had started. When the word fire was given, Barron was wounded in the hip where Decatur said he would shoot. Decatur was shot in the abdomen, fell soon after, and died later that night. The United States government first obtained exclusive use of the inlet and the right to maintain a repair and coaling station for ships here in 1887. The harbor was surveyed then and later, but improvements were not begun until after the United States annexed the Hawaiian Islands in 1898. In 1911 the work of dredging a wide channel from the sea, across the sandbar and coral reef at the mouth of the harbor, was completed. The channel is 1 1 m (35 ft) deep, and the harbor has a maximum depth of 18 m (60 ft), making the harbor available to the largest naval vessels. Early in the morning of December 7, 1 941 , Japanese submarines and carrier-based planes attacked the U.S. Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor. Nearby military airfields were also attacked by the Japanese planes. Eight American battleships and 1 3 other naval vessels were sunk or badly damaged, almost 200 American aircraft were destroyed, and approximately 3,000 naval and military personnel were killed or wounded.
