It is the fifth Navy ship to carry the title, but was originally comissioned as DECATUR IV CDD-936D in 1956: following a severe collision with an aircraft carrier in 1964, DD-936 was converted to the first of a new class Guided Missile Destroyer, and was recommissioned as DDG-31 on 29 April 1967. The primary mission of DECATUR is to operate offensively with a fast carrier strike force, providing anti-air and anti-submarine defense. Another mission is to provide shore bombardment in support of amphibious assault operations. Associated tasks include the protection: and screening of support forces and convoys against submarine, air and surface threats. USS DECATUR is 420 feet in length, with a maximum beam of 45 feet. The ship's draft is 23 feet for a displaycement of 4200 tons. The ship is powered by four 1200 psi boilers that drive two steam turbines, creating 35,000 shaft horsepower each. Under full power, the ship can maintain speeds over 30 knots for an extended period. Armament includes a single arm TARTAR CAAWJ missile launcher, an anti-submarine rocket CASROCJ launcher, two triple-tube torpedo launchers, and a single 5-inch 54 caliber gun mount. .-al' ,wmwqg -XX A AW, Q,-xv , M f,NfT3S'4i, wyr 0 gk bf, W' Commander Michael J. Believe me, after the crossing from Hawaii, we were ready for a little foreign exchange. Money was awful tight, though: only 220 Yen to the dollar, with a Kirin beer costing 450 Yen. Also, we were but a hop across the bay from Nagasaki, and there were not just a few ol-timers around who still remembered. Perhaps the best times in Sasebo were spent at the brand new base club that had just opened a week before our arrival, and complete with a bandit hall and swimming pool, that is where most of us ended up after blowing our wads in town. 60 I l l f i l , i '1 l l l l l l l l ' l i l 'a 1 l 1 i l .44 i J I l Z N'-.I L g. if Let the Wmd Blow Lanky and proud I triumphantly strode Up the gangway saluted the flag And at the top set down my bag As if that in itself could relieve the load Of so portentlous a moment a load Accumulated from weeks and days and hours at From months and years of tedious care Here I was about to step down on a road In Japan land of saki and Shogun and tea Of childhood dreams and dissolute fantasy, Japan, and here I was. A royal fanfare Should have been my welcome: hear the blare Of a hundred horns, followed by the roll Of a thousand drums, even the toll Of distant church bells would have satisfied My sense of ceremony. But alas! no toll, No peal, no pomp and pageantry for a dignified Ambassador: just the wind, blown high and wide Here as before, no different. I sighed, Stepped-down upon the shore, swung low My bag, and struck a measured stride. Here as before - so let the wind blow. - Craig Thomas Niedzielski Korea W3 SNS 9 f 0 ,. eau, W QQ ejbg - Fl! , N 1 V .,..,,-1 U ff 3 K ft 1 rl . ,' . Whoever let them and their infamous leader and his inglorious sidekick on board, anyway? Us wogs were just cruising along in the lower latitudes, soaking up sun and having a most magical time, when out of the blue-black deep came an untidy herd of unscrupulous shellbacks to commandeer our ship. After a rather spineless effort on our part to repugn their effrontery, we submitted to their nefarious demands, and now all live together the reprobate ways of the crusty Shellbacks. See, we had planned on stopping for fuel, just a quick pit stop to fill our gas tanks and maybe get out to stretch our legs - nothing, but then when they were not ready and made us anchor out an extra day, our Skipper hired a couple of tugboats to haul us all into town so we could do our thing for six hours. Believe me, the tugboat ride was the highlight of the evening - the place was worse than Toledo on a Saturday night, only the long stares from the reputed cannibals kept us quite alert. Oh well, an extra something to write home about. 3 1 9 l i i l l f I l 5 X X S426 iff x X r ustralia The dream of every American sailor is to pull in down-under in the land of kangaroo and eucalyptus. We pulled in thrice, the first time in Brisbane Cshown here, and site of the 1982 Commonwealth Gamesl and then two times in Sydney fnext pagel, before and after ops with the Royal Australian Navy. CSpecial thanks, by-the-bye, to HMAS Melbourne for the raisin dinner rolls she sent over via helo.l Despite the poor exchange rate with the Autralian dollar, we all had plenty of good times, thanks to the many fabulous people who took us to their homes and out on the town. It was all we could do to keep up with them - not so easy when it came to playing football or soccer, or when drinking beer afterwards. Aussies are famous for inhaling huge quantities of ale, but we humored them and drank our lot, and by the time we left for New Zealand, our newly acquired British accents were thick and sloshy. 75 mu i 1 Q 3 15 V LI 'vwg K Lf r J if , 5 5 1 -I 1 .2 3. 5 51 g. 5 1 .5 1. i 1 i s i Y I 1 .Q-K V-HP - ,-:-J Q. 1, -,QR H. 033' , M. if , 3 ,.. ,V W... -.4 A EZ? .. fwrj f F W, . ,.,X-- H w .., '- A '- , fl: 1 -2 N ' , 'W Tx x , Q VM! .S ,e: . Since they are our first contact with Homeport America, we are quite elated to see them and to spend time together. It is, after all, their freedom we have been out preserving ever so diligently, and it is nice to see that it has all been worthwhile, being underway for six months can dull the memory of our raison d 'etre., The 1981 Decatur Tiger Cruise was orchestrated by LTjg Mark Kershner Cwho had his father aboardl and a special thanks to him for making it a success.
