Beautiful waters. SUBIC BAK R. 1? Subic became our home away from home, where we returned for much needed repairs. After six stops there we began to wonder if our home port had been permanently changed. For those men who were so inclined, the base offered just about every form of recreation imaginable, from horseback riding to deep sea fishing. Places like Grande Island, B-6 and the Sampaguita Club occupied our spare moments. For those braver souls with strong stomachs who dared venture across the bridge outside the main gate, Olongapo held many new and strange sights. With over 300 bars and nightclubs within a 2 mile radius, it was not hard to find one or two to our liking. It's doubtful if anyone will forget places like the East End, New Jollos, and the alligator pit outside Paulines. A popular pastime.

GUAM Another of our stepping stones across the Pacific, Guam was a welcome respite from shipboard activity. For many of us, we had our first swim in the waters of a South Pacific island. Guam was a very picturesque place, though the old Guam is good slogan didn't really convince many of us. . - -A ,...-.....,-. rf- ,,,:. ,....,-an-.f... --L .,, X ,...., . . ,..- . . , , Y G ,,.:-L N v,,,,,,,,,.47,-qs, -4 ,Y :,- ,.,...,.- . 4 , A ...ur- . . . . - M IDWAY An island, barely big enough to shelter our ship from the elements, Midway was the epitome of a BSF, Brief Stop for Fuel. During the few hours we were ashore, we were entertained by the antics of the Cooney Bird, something' that must be seen to be believed. We gladly returned to the ship for we felt more secure aboard than ashore.
