Another recovery. Chasing birdfarrns faircraft carriers to those not tuned in to Navy slangj occupied surprisingly little of our time this cruise. At the start of each launch or recovery cycle we had to man our plane guard stations in case a plane ended up in the water. This made for long days standing 8 on and 4 off Qwatchy especially if it cut into our sleep, but no one was disappointed when we were not called upon to rescue any downed flyers. It is a tribute to the quality of the pilots we Worked with, that there was never any accident while we operated with the carriersf ,

Operations with a helicopter can be hazardous, whether it is only the holy helo bringing us the Chaplain for Sunday services, or it's a full scale VERTREP from the NIAGARA FALLS, The 'helos generally brought us our mail when We were at sea, so we knew when we heard Now station the helo detail, Mail call wouldn't be far behind. Watching the helicopter pilots in action confirmed the rumors We had heard about all ' ' airdales being crazy, but we couldn't help admiring the skill they had in maneuvering those big birds.
