SWARZTRAUBER commenced his Navy career in May 1952, graduating that year from Officer Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island. He served in Beach Jumper Unit Two from 1952 to 1954 as Navigator and Operations Officer. From 1954 through 1955 he was Operations Officer and then Supply Officer in USS LANINC CAPD-559. From 1955 to 1957 he served as Main Battery Officer in USS CORAL SEA CCVA-435. He was then assigned to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations COP-435 from 1957 to 1959. From 1960 t0 1962 he Served in USS BRADFORD CDD-5455 consecutively as Operations Officer, Executive Officer, and as Officer in Charge, DD 545 Transfer Team, which delivered the ship to the Creek Navy. From 1963 to 1966 he completed another tour in the Office of the CNO with assignments in the Strategic Plans Division COP-605 and the Politico-Military Policy Division COP-615. From 1966 to 1967 he was assigned as Executive Officer Of USS HALSEY CDLG-233. During 1968 and 1969 he served in Vietnam, successively as Commander River Squadron Five, Chief Staff Officer River Patrol Force CTF-1161, and as Commander Task Force Clearwater. He assumed command of the DECATUR CDDC-315 in Hong Kong on 14 July 1970. A Commander SWARZTRAUBER was horn on 23 June 1929 in Zion, Illinois, a suburban town north of Chicago on Lake Michigan. He was married in 1953 to Beryl Stewart of Haworth, New Jersey. The SWARZTRAUBERS have four children: Sayre, Jr. 055, Beryl Ann C12D, Heidi 005, and Holly 123. ALLEN, ,son of Mr. and Mrs. George I. Allen of Caruthersville, Missouri, was born on January 16, 1930. After completing the local schools in Caruthersville, he attended Southwestern at Memphis before entering the Navy Officer Candidate School. Following graduation from Officer Candidate School, in December 1952, he reported to the USS MCCOY REYNOLDS CDE-4403 and served as Gunnery 'Officer during operations with the Seventh Fleet from January 1953 to December 1955. ln January 1956 he reported for duty on the Staff of Commander Destroyer Flotilla 6, where he served as Aide and Flag Lieutenant. In October 1958 he completed the General Line Course at the Navy P.G. School at Monterey, California. From Monterey, he reported for duty in November 1958 as Assistant Secretary in the Office of Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, D. C. As a Lieutenant he returned to sea duty in March 1961 as Executive Officer of the USS BORDELON CDDR-8813. In August 1962 LCDR ALLEN took command of the USS ALACRITY CMSO-5205. The two assignments carried him to the Mediterranean for deployments in support of Sixth Fleet operations. After' completing the course at the Armed Forces Staff College at Norfolk, Virginia in January 1965, he re- ported to the Office of the Chief of Naval.Operations as Head, Joint Plans Section, Logistics Plans Division. Commander ALLEN took command of USS DECATUR during ceremonies at sea on September 19, 1968. He is married to the former Carolyn Milton of Martin, Tennessee, daughter of Mrs. O. O. Milton. They have three sons, Paul, Christy and Wesley. Commander ALLEN is presently attending the Naval War College in Washing- ton, D. C. LIEUTENANT COMMANDER GORDON L. THORPE USN EXECUTIVE OFFICER Lieutenant Commander Gordon L. THORPE commenced his Navy career in October 1956, graduating that year from Officer Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island, Class Twenty Eight. He served in USS INFLICT CMSO1456J from 1956 to 1958 as First Lieutenant and Operations Officer. From 1958 to 1960 he was Officer in Charge of the Inshore Minesweeper CAPE CMSI-233 from 1960 to 1962 he was Engineer Officer in USS SHELTON CDD-7905. He was then assigned to the NROTC Unit, University of Michigan as Assistant Professor of Naval Science instructing in Operations, Engineering, and Leadership curriculum. From 1964 to 1966 he assumed command of USS ELKHORN CAOG-73. LCDR THORPE was then assigned as a student at the' Naval War College command and staff course for one year. From 1968 to 1970 he was assigned as Aide and Flag Secretary on the staff of Commander Sixth Fleet. In 1971 he was assigned as Executive Officer USS DECATUR CDDG-311. He is currently in receipt of orders to the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, Strategic Plans Division COP-605. LCDR THORPE was born on 11 September 1934 in Chicago, Illinois. His wife Sandra and two boys Christopher and Russell reside in Tustin, California.
