They were a great help in serving crew banquets. Agriculture played an impor- tant part in the freshmen boys' first year on board. Spanish, speech, manual train- ing and general science were other subjects taken by freshmen. Their first entertainment- was their Christms party held during a class meeting. Larry Guinn was chosen class presidentg Chuck Johnson, vice- presidentg and Arlene Jennings, secretary treasurer. In General Science, the sophomores learned the principles of nature to help make their sailing go more smoothly. The Seamen also studied the history of the world so that they might better understand the people at the many docks where they dropped anchor. ln the agriculture department they learned to camp on shore and raise the food necessary for the ship's cook on the long voy- age ahead. At the same time the home economics students assisted the cook in serving the crew. They have helped a great deal in the deck entertainment by taking part in mixed chorus, glee clubs, band ensembles, speech, and debate.
