These new faces were welcomed by every student, for in no time they were a part of us. They chose as their class officers: president, Derry Bishopg vice-president, Evan Moody and secretary and treasurer, Jim Miesner. They have done well to carry on successful class meetings. Their spon- sors are Mrs. Gertrude Railsback and Mr. Lloyd Moody. Many of the freshmen have gone out for sports, even though they are too small to play. With determination and growth they will someday make the first team. The girls have been taking a wide in- terest in home economics. They have sewed, cooked and even served at various banquets. Agriculture seems to be a favorite of the freshmen boys. Other subjects that claimed freshmen were world history, algebra, general science, Spanish and speech. A big event of the year was the fresh- men party which was held at the shelter house in honor of one of their classmates, Barbara Edwards, who was leaving for California. 6 ff' f 5-E ' xi 'if A' 1. 12. The reason we call them versatile is because so many of them take part in athletics, music activities, agricultural contests and some even entered the speech contest. Then we remember one of the class meetings we looked in on. We found that the class as awhole was very interested in their stu- dent-arranged program. Class officers are president--Neil Votapka, vice-president--Phyllis Anderson. and secretary-treas- urer--Janet Wurm. The subjects which a sopho- more may enroll in include home economics, English, Spanish, agricultural, world history, gen- eral science, algebra, geometry, constitution, and manual training. Classes plus activities fill their time. Eleanor Burg and Waldo Anderson made first team in debate. The juniors claim a high percentage of the glee clubs and mixed chorus, and twenty juniors are in band. They were very prominent in This Is It, the January variety show. Two girls, Charolette Urling and Marcillerl-Iolmberg were voted by the student body and will go to Girls' State this summer. Dick Barrett and Waldo Anderson will go to Boys' State. The officers of the junior class this year were president-Dick Barrettg vice- president-Marcille Holmbergg and sec- retary-treasurer-Beverly Cozad. Spon- sors were Miss Madelyn Ableson, Mr. Jack Fields, and Mr. Luther Colyer. When October rolled around the juniors staged a three-act comedy, The Little Dog Laughed. In April came the junior-senior prom and banquet with its problems of theme, program, decoration, and entertainment. Many juniors have proved skill and talent which they have showed to fellow students and others through- out the year of 1952-53. 7 School spirit ran exceptionally high this year. Throughout the entire year our student body, led by their four cheerleaders, supported all teams with the utmost enthusiasm. The task of keeping school pep high was capably handled by the cheerleaders, who in conjunction with the pep committee planned all pep stunts, meetings, speeches, and rallies. This they did for the boys who did the actual work on the field, mat, court, and track. The D-Club, made up of the lettermen, opened the year with initiation of new members and election of officers. Lee Fortin, Gary Quinn, and Wayne Bosler were elected president, vice-president, and secretary treasurer, respectively. The year was brought to a close by the annual Athletic Banquet, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Their speaker for the year of 1953 was Mr. Keith Lambert, assistant basketball coach from Kansas State College at Manhattan. ll wf...f.t.f..1-74 w ...ff cf1....,.. 5TH ROW: Moody, Carver, Addleman, Vernon, Kyte, Jeffus. The honor was bestowed upon Joanne DeMay who, with her attendants, reigned over the Smith Center game after being crowned that afternoon in an assembly. Queen DeMay's attendants were Lynne Gaumer, Charolette Urling, Leila Raulston, and Elna Shaw. To celebrate the occasion a dance was held in the gymnasium after the game. Following the annual tradition the Oberlin students held the Halloween Clean-up on October 30. Catering to elderly people, the students raked over Z5 lawns and Z6 truck loads of leaves were carried away. Much was accom- plished in carrying out the origi- nal plan instituted in 1926. 13 ,il - -if'-sf J 5 an ..,.. .6 ,f ,, f r, , A f i ii. STATE TOURNEY BOUND STATE CHAMP '52 red Although the winter winds blew and the snow often drifted high, almost every night one could see Charlie Lyons' wrestling boys run- ning their outdoor conditioning course. This is an example of the spirit and determination that the 1952-'53 wrestlers maintained throughout the entire season. Six lettermen, returning from the 1951-'52 championship team, and some twenty-five other hope- ful candidates opened the season as soon as the fall footballs were put away. Of the seven dual matches scheduled, the Red Devils won three and placed fifth in both the league and regional tournies. Four boys, Dee Fortin, Jerry Marietta, Phil Erickson, and David Brainard qualified for the state meet. Coach Lyons awarded letters to eight boys at the season's end and Dee Fortin was elected the team captain. No championship was won, but all the fellows who par- ticipated profited bythe experience in sportrnanship and competition. B -SQUAD AT WORK DR. Z1 lelafe s PQQC an l'6ll'l'la Dear Diar , Early in Sgpt. --This month was full of many activities as ten students joined together in Mrs. Railsback's room to start preparing for the debate season. We found the ques-tion for this year one of high interest as it concerned our foreign policy in Resolved: That the Atlantic Pact Nations should form a Federal Union. Dec. 6--Today, the Oberlin debate team won their first tourney as they swept through their own invitational undefeated with Phil- lipsburg and Osborne following with one loss each. Ian. 24--Well, dear diary, today will be one of happy memories for all the debaters and D. C. H. S. as well as they were pro- claimed Northwest Kansas Debate Champions by winning the Northwest Kansas Debate Tourney at Hays. The trophy is certainly a beautiful piece of hardware. Ian. 31'-W6 journeyed to Lawrence today, dear Diary, to participate in the state debate tournament. We didn't place, but we had the satisfaction of being one of the top six teams in the state. Mar. 28--Well, the debate season is over and speech is now in the limelight. Today, we journeyed to Hays to participate in the District Speech and Drama Festival. We received a total of six l's which entitle us to return to Fort Hays State College in three weeks for the State Festival. April I8--Two carloads of speech and drama students journeyed to Hays today to compete with the best talent found in this half of the state. We received high ratings of which the speech students can be proud. gen fu red t-Q21 X' J ist r ' ' - ,Q 4 ' r K We-ty 1,5 In the spring these young men's fancies turned to thoughts 7 t . Jack Fields, the new band director, Y probably had a few doubts as to whether or not he would ever get any band harmony out of the troupe by the end of the year. The music wing is still a noisy place during- fourth hour, but as the weeks rolled by one began to hear a sound resembling a melody. Under the direction of Mr. Fields the band has participated at the football and basketball games, band concert, pre -festival concert and the District Festival where they obtained a I rating. One of the highlights of the school year for the band was the annual band ban- quet held in the 4-H building. In the remaining weeks of school the band tookpart in the out-door concert and commencement. Dear Diary, This year we followed the direction of a new teacher, Miss Nancy Lehman, in Mixed Chorus. Sixty-eight of us meet twice a week, every Monday and Thurs- day and more often before contest and special programs. Taking part in the Christmas program, we sang the Night Before Christmas. Working hard, we presented You'll Never Walk Alone, and In Thy Holy Pres- sence for the pre-festival concert and at the music festival. Dear Diary, we were very proud of ourselves at contestg we received a I! At the beginning of the year we voted for officers which are president, Lynne Gaumerg secretary and treasurer, Bobby King. Librarians are Bobby Brown and Stanley Chapin. Some of us have spent twelve years together, preparing ourselves for adulthood. But working together was fun ----- who could possibly forget the class play, Arsenic and Old Lace ? Or the final senior assembly with its fun and frolic as we said good-bye? When graduation drew near, we were so busy we didn't have time to feel sad. Baccalaureate Service with its helpful suggestions lent a thought- ful note to our last week together. Then came senior breakfast, when we met to begin our last day together.
