This goal is achieved X If ' t xi K ll only by concentrated study under the able faculty devoted to directing young lives. To be good losers as well as winners is tau ht on the football and baseball fields, J X N Q l X basketball court, wrestling mats and track, Parties during the four years are culminated I with the annual junior-senior prom attended by upper classmen only. l The one goal of every freshman as he enters these halls in September is to hold in his hand four years later the coveted diploma signifying that he has succeeded in these goals. Now he is ready to put to use these many lessons he has learned. And so we, the staff of the l958 Hawkeye, give you a pictorial composite of the life of the students here at Decatur. However, learning at Decatur is not entirely confined to text books. Our wood and machine shops offer us many opportunities in manual training, The Decatur student also realizes that the oppor- tunities gained in public speaking classes help in what- ever vocation he may choose. WE TREASURE SPECIAL To the Decatur student, the annual freshmen initiation symbolizes the Decatur spirit. The day is given to friendly rivalry between the senior and freshmen classes. At the close of the day every freshman knows that he's one of us now. Realizing that all work makes Jack a dull boy, the informal dances at Decatur have be- come a tradition. informally called sock hops, Decatur students leave shoes on the bleachers and spend a few hours dancing to the latest hit tunes in the gymnasium. Each fall the Sunshine Society, a high school girls organization, initiates new members at o candlelight ceremony, lt is the pride of each initiate to be able to wear the yellow seal bear- ing the letters S. CLASS HISTORY We, the class of l958, have come a long way since entering high school four years ago. We have seen many new fads, ideas and inventions come and ga during these years. The fall of i954 saw us, the freshmen, initiated into high school routine. It was real torture during those first few weeks trying to discover what room to go with what subject, but we soon had this confusion under control. A great discovery by Dr. Jonas Salk was tested for the first time during this year. We have seen the Salk Polio Vaccine become accepted and used extensively. As sophomores we anticipated the many activities of our junior year. New to our school that year was the inter- communications system given us by the P.T.A. A big thrill came when we received our class rings with the outstanding feature of the symbolic Hawk in the center. One of the most difficult obstacles of that year was our research papers. Many long hours were spent in gathering information at the public libraries. Jay Atkinson set a good example for the juniors of the future with 72 pages on the subject of mythology. In order to raise the funds for the Junior-Senior Prom, we sold magazine subscriptions. Best salesman was Fred Schellenberg. The theme for the prom at Indiana University Medical Center was Lilac Time . Joe Spencer and his band provided the dance music. THE SENIOR CLASS JOE KEEN Transfer Ben Davis 25 Track 2-35 Choir 2-3. CLASS HISTORY The years have come and gone and suddenly we are seniors. At last it's time to initiate the in- coming freshmenl We had a good time and we hope that they did too, they were wonderful sports. This year a new car was born-the l958 Edsel -presented by the Ford Motor Company. Sputnik! That's what they called the Russian Satellite that traveled in its orbit around the earth. Rock 'N Roll and Elvis Presley had their day. The big sports event of every year is Home- coming. Nancy Ross, senior, was queen for l957. The senior class float won the prize for having the most originality. Terry Neher was chosen as the most valuable football player of the year l957. A lot of work, but it was funl was among the comments heard as members of the senior class presented the play. Nancy Murphy Nancy Murphy, senior, was selected to serve as a member of Ayres' Fashion Board this year. She was chosen to represent Decatur by the personnel and fashion directors of the store. Nancy attended a breakfast meet- ing the first Saturday of each month. Here fashions and fads were discussed. In her spare time, Nancy modeled in Ayres' Tea Room. FASHION BOARD MEMBERS A position on Block's Fashion Board for senior Betty Tolen required mod- eling, column writing and weekly meetings. Betty represented Decatur along with sixty other girls from the various high schools of Indianapolis. Her meetings were on Wednesday and her column appeared in the CIothesline , Blocks' publication. Betty Tolen l Y me DRAMA AT DECATUR Behind scenes duties include make-up artists busy with last minute touches necessary to make a member of the cast look convincingly like the character he is portraying. Drama at Decatur is at its peak in the spring when the annual senior class play is presented. First comes the excitement of tryouts and finally the cast members are announced. Lines to be learned, sets to be made, props to be supplied, programs to be printed and tickets to be sold all keep seniors busy in the days before the two big nights of performance. Curtain time tenseness comes and goes as the play gets underway. All the many hours of work are climaxed when the words A tremendous performance are heard. Last year's play, The Perfect ldiot , was under the direction of Mrs. Jeannine McGowan and Mrs. Betty Van Campen. An intense situation from The Perfect ldiot arouses action from mem- bers of the cast. l I nb ' a .nl 43 g CH SECTION 1' I , .W W I J, 7 .
