Future Teachers of America The F.T.A. was organized to help stu- dents, who have ambitions to be teachers, gain some knowledge and experience in that field. The club met every month and discussed their field trips and their scholarship fund. Each year a member of the society receives twenty-five dollars toward his college expenses. The members operated the coat check at the home basketball games. Several of the members had the opportun- ity to student teach at Stephen Decatur and West Newton Grade Schools.

Our student council at Decatur is com- posed of a girl and a boy from each of the four grades. They assist Mr. Rankin in choosing the convocations for the entire student body. This year's president was Dale Williams, a senior representative. 52 The council also, oversees the initiation of the freshmen at the first of the school year. We would like to thank this group of students for the fine group of programs they have arranged for us.

Second Row: Richard Catt, Dorothy Allender, Carolyn Bertram, Jim Newsom, Russell Day, Sue Butler, Helena Shipley, Sue Schutte, Valeria Stillings. The National Honor Society is one of the most important organizations at Decatur. It limits its membership according to scholastic standings. At the end of the first semester every year, the top ten per cent of the junior class are ad- mitted. At the same time, in addition to the seniors who have been admitted the year be- fore, the top twenty-five per cent of the senior class is admitted. Mr. Holeman is the sponsor of the so- ciety this year. 54 Each spring, members of the organization spend a week-end at Clifty Falls State Park at Madison, Indiana. In January of 1955, the ten per cent of the junior class were initiated. They were: j im Albrecht, joan Auble, Phyllis Baker, Carol Carlisle, Denny Cummings, Margaret Duvall, Amos Mills, and Judy Repogle. They all repeated the membership pledge and Mr. jackson and the officers read the pur- pose and ideals of the club to them
