We especially want to acknowledge the help and en- couragement of our sponsor, Mr. Thornberry, during the past year. Without his sincere desire to make our class a suc- cessful one neither this annual nor any of the class's projects would have been possible. So we hereby extend our gratitude and wish him all the very best that life can offer. 4 ,J Jn. if 5 . Q MaybeZlene Mr. and Mrs. Rankin led the parade of floats driving Mick Smith's car. Coach Byfield Crowned Joann Purdue as Queen while her attendants: Janice Mudd, Jackie Miller, Carolyn Burnside and Reba Smith looked on. The G.A.A. came out with the theme of Greenwood over the fallrf' Marsha Miller and Judy Demmery are on the float. Old King Cole had several loyal subjects from Greenwood. Ed Bryan represented the king for Hi- Y and Sunshine Society. Homecoming - A Homecoming was held October 14. A dinner was served by the wrestlers in the cafe- teria. Before the game, the floats were presen- ted and the band led them in. At the half, the band paraded and the queen was crowned . It was also announced that the senior class float had won first place. The seniors really made an impressive sight. Seven cars, with letters on them, spell- ing out SENIOR led the float onto the field. On them were seven senior girls: Margaret Duvall, Barbara Dillon, Lois Paddock, Linda Wfilliams, Deloris Dunn, Jean Davis, and Pat Price representing bridesmaids. The team came through by winning the game 12 to 0. A dance was held after the game sponsor- ed by the G. A. A. The High School Dance Band provided the music. It was a night to be remembered for a long time by all the students of D. C. H. S. I0 I Deruffzr Tube Thee Greerzufood' was the theme of the senior class float which won first place. On the float are Larry Kugelman and Janet Eller. Memorable Event Decatur Cenrral's Hawks came through with their first win of the season. The vic- tory, offsetting the Homecoming activities, was scored as an upset over favored Greenwood. Greenwood won the toss and elected to receive. On Greenwood's second down, Larry McGill knocked down an important pass. The first quarter was scoreless, but Greenwood gained 101 yards to Decatur's 60. Decatur outmarched them in the second quarter by 90 to 25 but since there was no score in that quarter either, the score stood at the half at 0 to O. Paul Larrison took the ball for Decatur to start the second half and returned it for ll yards. The Hawk's moved 70 yards for their first touchdown with Larrison and Richard Clarkson alternating at carrying the ball. The score came on a 30 yard run by Larrison. The running try for the extra point was stopped. Paul Larrison scored again in the fourth quarter. The point was blocked. Final Score: Decatur 12 Greenwood 0 Decatur Win-D Game was the title of the junior class float which took second place. On the float are Clair Freeman and Karen Eller. We chopped the Woodmerz d0u'r2. The sophomore class depicted the scene on their float. The freshman wore whatever the seniors told him to wear. The regular ceremonies were held on the football field. Several stunts were partici- pated in by the freshies as well as their main job of cleaning all the senior's cars. The stunts were organized by a committee appointed by the senior class, in co-operation with the student council. All the freshmen were very good sports, and the day was a lot of fun for everybody. l. Get Mick's car clean, boys-Mick Smith's lux- ury liner gained popularity this year as Maybellene. 2. The startled look on the rwo boy's faces comes from tasting what was supposed to be whipped cream, only to find that it was shaving cream. 3. Paul Larrison and jim Harless fight to the end in a very fair game called, Moriority, Are You There? 4. Edward Bryan wanted to make sure the motor of his Jaguar was clean. - - - Freshman lmtuatlon Some of the stunts were: a tug of war, seniors against freshmeng wheel-barrow racesg relay racesg the boys climbed greased goal postsg the shovel races, and at the end of the ceremony the freshmen bowed to the seniors as a salute to them. The senior class thought the fresh- men were pretty swell themselves. Dale Williams, Margaret Duvall, and Mr. Rankin acted as directors. Dale represented the Student Council and Margaret, the class. Twenty-seven seniors showed up with their cars, so the freshmen had a busy time. Some of the girls experienced wearing onions around their necks for the first time. Good luck to all future seniors and fresh- men on their inititions. 5. This was the first year that the front steps were cleaned with tooth brushes. The kids did a pretty good job, too - it was a mess! 6. Find your shoes and socks, kids. Aren't seniors mean? But it was all in fun. 7. Ennis Pyle seemed unable to find his shoes. He wasn't the only one. 8. Have you ever tried the great dish of melted baking chocolate marshmallows. These kids have, and blindfolded at that! To help with the constant demand for more classrooms, another addition was made to the recently completed West Newton Grade School. Other improvements include the building of the high school track field, which should be completed in the near future. We, the senior class of 1956, would like to thank Mr. Butler, Mr. Haverstick, Mr. Mills and Mr. Card for the part they have played in giving us such a wonderful school in which to learn ADVISORY BOARD William Haverstick Howard Mills Lionel Card FRED W. They assist Mr. Rankin in choosing the convocations for the entire student body. This year's president was Dale Williams, a senior representative. 52 The council also, oversees the initiation of the freshmen at the first of the school year. We would like to thank this group of students for the fine group of programs they have arranged for us. Teachers--of the Future Fin! Future Teachers of America The F.T.A. was organized to help stu- dents, who have ambitions to be teachers, gain some knowledge and experience in that field. The club met every month and discussed their field trips and their scholarship fund. Each year a member of the society receives twenty-five dollars toward his college expenses. The members operated the coat check at the home basketball games. Several of the members had the opportun- ity to student teach at Stephen Decatur and West Newton Grade Schools. The National Honor Society is one of the most important organizations at Decatur. It limits its membership according to scholastic standings. At the end of the first semester every year, the top ten per cent of the junior class are ad- mitted. At the same time, in addition to the seniors who have been admitted the year be- fore, the top twenty-five per cent of the senior class is admitted. Mr. Holeman is the sponsor of the so- ciety this year. 54 Each spring, members of the organization spend a week-end at Clifty Falls State Park at Madison, Indiana. In January of 1955, the ten per cent of the junior class were initiated. They were: j im Albrecht, joan Auble, Phyllis Baker, Carol Carlisle, Denny Cummings, Margaret Duvall, Amos Mills, and Judy Repogle. They all repeated the membership pledge and Mr. jackson and the officers read the pur- pose and ideals of the club to them Top Twentg-Six Students -Q. Pictures, Words, Work Make A Hawkeye K Mr. Whitaker, our advisor, seems pleased with the prog- ress shown as group pictures are taken. The Hawkeye Staff was chosen by the senior class. Under the capable leadership of co-editors, Janet Eller and Margaret Duvall, the annual was planned with a progress theme. They were assisted by Mary Ann Edwards, Deloris Dunn, Jean Davis, and Sue Schutte. The financial work was efficient- ly completed by business managers, Edward Bryan and Larry Kugelman. In addition to the advertis- ing, money was raised by a school dance. Mr. Whitaker was the advisor. Janet and Margaret were sent to the High School journalism Institute in July to learn the make-up on a good yearbook. They believe they brought back some very new ideas. The Sunshine Society is a society of girls from the four grades of high school, devoted to the task of promoting good cheer and sunshine. In November, a committee headed by Sue Schutte made and distributed several baskets of fruit to elderly and invalid people. This act was deeply appreciated as indicated by the several thank-you letters we received. Each summer, the officers-elect are sent to camp Tecum- seh at Delphi, Indiana. The society has shown films, sponsored dances and a talent show in the past few years to raise the needed money. Decatur Central always makes one of the largest contributions. Senior High Safetg Patrol The members of the safety patrol have certainly been a help this year to the student body. There are several boys who served as parking directors for our football and basketball games. Other members served as bus captains for the bus drivers. Each year the patrol sponsors a roller skating patry, which is always en- joyed by all the members. Also, the members take a field trip to an interesting place in Indiana. In past years, they have made trips to the Boys' School at Plainfield, The Masonic Home at Franklin, and several other places of notable importance. Margaret Duvall was the only senior in the patrol. She served as the secretary and treasurer for three years. Mr. McCory has been the sponsor of the organization for the past several years. He has done a wonderful job of re-organizing the group and making it a very successful safety patrol. Each summer the Lion's Club sponsors a township fair at the school. At that time the members exhibit their finished products for which they receive township ribbons. The fair is always enjoyed by everyone. Mrs. Baker heads the girls' clubs. She is assisted by several adult leaders and junior leaders. Mr. Adamson heads the boys' clubs. He is assisted by several former 4-H members who now farm in our community. The junior leaders attend county meetings at the Purdue Marrott Center in Indianapolis. The meetings are held monthly and there is fun for all. We certainly are proud of our 4-H clubs here at Decatur Township. M kk ...Ak ...,. in .. .wm..,.. S .. X- A ... Q gy we-sea-A M V - f .. Denny Cummings, Darrell Underwood and Larry Kugelman attended the Fall Re- treat Hi-Y Camp at Flatrock. This year's officers were: President - Denny Cummings, Vice President - Ray Stan- ley, Treasurer - Amos Mills, Secretary - Ed Bryan, Sergeant-at arms - Larry Kugelman, Chaplain - Jim Newsom. Each spring the organization sends re- presentatives to the Model United Nations, At Christmas, several of the boys helped to set up the decorations at Decatur and West Newton Grade School. At West Newton, they fixed an outdoor movie screen, and the story of Christmas was automatically shown every night for people passing by in their cars. Mr. Jackson is the sponsor and we believe that the boys really derive a great deal of good out of this club. D. C. H. S. They learn to use the school's projector and slide machine. They take the responsibility for seeing that the films are mailed out also. They take turns showing the Current News Films which are sent to us every month by an Indianapolis newspaper. They are en- joyed by all the faculty and student body.
