We took the English of Allain and Wall And to make things worse, that wasn't all- There was Civics and Science, Math and Latin. We studied till callouses formed where we sat in. But we came through with banners tall. No longer were we the Freshmen lowly But Sophomores, ruling this one class solely, For yet were above us our haters: The Juniors and Seniors, our ohly dictators: However, we ruled the Freshmen boldly. The subjects we took were much the same As we had before, but only in name, There was Latin and History. Biology, Math And all of the things that English Two hath, Yet we Hnished year two, then our third year came. We were Juniors then with no lament The Junior-Senior was our main event, And we put it over, as all have said 'Tis the best Decatur has ever had. This is a fact, not just a hint. We passed Culver's Plane Geometry With the Square on the Hypotenuse as our fee, There was Miss Culver's English, Badgett's History Some Non-coms. feared their grades in Chemistry, But we still had hopes that Seniors we'd be. Bald-headed row, we've now arrived For three years these classes we have survived. We've reached the goal we hoped to attain But in doing so we've crammed our poor brains, Till some of us may never be revived. Mr. Huie has tried to defeat our purpose To have failed in Trigonometry would really have hurt us. Miss Crawford's English of Chaucer and Shakespeare Is really not as hard as most of you fear. Say, are you kidding? should go here. As the travelogues in the movies say We now look back on each happy day, Though we had thoughts of College and jobs We will end up as doughboys and gobs, For our Country's at war, and the enemies must pay! After 10 long years in the army we have received our first Eur- lough. So what do we do but head back to dear old Decatur to see some of our old boyhood haunts. As we got off the train, we called a cab, and who should be driving but Jack Adams, who runs his own company now-Adams Autogyro Air Cab Company. After alighting in front of the Candler Hotel, which, by the way is now owned by Virgil Cantrell, we immediately headed for good old D. B. H. On the way we stopped at Hicks' Horticultural House to buy Pinky English, the Freshman English teacher, a flower to present as a peace offering to certain lady teachers. As we sauntered up the walk, who should greet us but Alonzo Buckler, principal of the school. He asked us to walk to the shops with him to see his new janitor, Scotty Candler. Passing through the school, we saw Robert Ledbetter, the Trig teacher, still trying to pound some math in the head of his prize pupil, Harold Hudgins. We strolled into the C1lee Club room where Arthur Kirkman and Billy Boyd were teaching music to some of the song-birds. At the doors of Chapel we paused to listen a moment to a talk by Dr. Mark Gutzke, a great evangelist, and Harlan Brown, now America's greatest orator and recently crowned King of the Ether Waves. Lt. Bobby Graves, our P. M. S. 29' T., was busy trying to get Sgt. Instructor, Ed. Wilson, to do some work. We left the school after paying our respects to the football coach, Rich- ard Plampin, who had played on the same championship team as Jim Richard- son, Charlie Rey, and Jim Tuggle. On the street we passed Billy Anderson pushing a baby carriage with his twins, Billy and Patsy. We continued on up to the Denton Photographers, where Dick was taking pictures of those two stars of screen and radio, Jack Dunn and Billy Hodges. Coming out we saw that Casanova of all Casanovas, John Glover, going to have his picture taken to give it to another one of his many girls. Going into the court house we saw Sheriff Billy Smith and Judge John Weitnauer, who as usual, were doing nothing but talking to the Chief-of-Police, Frank Staley. We turned on the radio and heard that great swing band of Schlirf and Hollis, who are still looking for their long- lost drummer, Billy Hipkins. We walked over to the Ranch, now operated by Ranchman I-Iames, and ordered some drinks from soda-jerks Haskell Reese and Chester Harmistead. On the way over to the city newspaper office, we observed Walter Austin and Joe Martin raising the flag on the Court Square, their only job now. We didn't stay long at the newspaper office because Editor Ravenel was blessing out Russell Whaley, the gossip columnist, for not bringing in the scoop on the latest escapade of Mack Freeman, Decatur's man of many experiences. Leav- 14. The Caveat Emptor PROPHECY ing, we saw Billy Henry, as usual, whistling at the girls as they pass. Passing the Dekalb Theater we saw Robert Guerard chasing one of his snakes while Manager Jack Edwards and the singing ushers, Buddy Chambers, Jack Collins, Charles Chapman, and Lamar Ferrell were up a telephone pole. We called the World's Greatest Vetinarians, Dr. Kite and Dr. Kracke, to treat one of Charles Richardson's dogs for snake-bite, but Grady Wilson brought his patent med- icine around first and the dog died immediately. All the way around town we were hounded by Bob Amsler, who was looking for ads for the Siwash U. yearbook. Passing a book store run by Hopkins Kidd, we noticed a spelling book written by Bobby Tiller, who revised Mark Twain's old saying I wouldn't give a deuce for a man who couldn't spell a word more than one way. Alan Shelton and David Scott rushed up to us, trying to sell an automobile and demonstrating the technique they learned in Mr. Badgett's salesmanship class. Bobby Lee, Ed Leslie, Owen Lindsey, and Stanley Manahan just got back from a peace conference in London, where they saw Preston Rose and George Whiting running their own laundry, We stopped to get some gas at the Cooper, Cross, and Fountain De Luxe Filling Station, and saw Allen Day and Bill Doucher who were back from a job of coaching basketball at a northern college. They had just seen a big league baseball game in which George Williams, Ernest Smith, and Julian Athon starred for the Hendon Horrors. We stopped in to see Milburn Easley and Frank Jolly, who now run a store for ladies' ready-to-wear, Fred Amsler and Sammy Dyer are managers of their own grocery stores, and Robert Hall, owner of his own meat market. Dewey Scarboro. King of the Ivories, was just on a vacation in Cuba, where he saw Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Breen, Jr., dwelling in a romantic little cottage in Havana. Guy Summerour and Bill Young are with the army teaching WAACS, Billy Merritt and Bobby Paine are still trying to learn Gray's Elegy for their English IV teacher, Prof. Stokes QHang-over from Miss Crawford, who retired 5 years agoj. The Pierce and Pounds Poultry and Produce store is next door to Sharian's Turkish Bath House. The Charles Glass Incorporated Printers Company is in competition with the Walker's Writers for the publishing of the 1953 Caveat Emptor. Bobby Fannon and Jack Scott put on a great tennis exhibition for the governor of Georgia, the Hon. Dennis F. Jones, after which Letson White, nationally-known golfer, demonstrated his technique, aided by his caddy, Mickey Baker. Last of all we went over to see Dr. Norman Gardner, noted baby specialist, who was conducting a class in how to pin diapers on the wiggling youngsters.
