The extraordi- nary decorations and good food and music mode for o very special night for all who attended. The extended hours of FUTURAMA , until 5:00 a.m.. proved o success and gave the graduates more rime to enjoy the last moments of rheir high school lives. The night was spent dancing, ear- ing, playing video games, orjust talk- ing and reminiscing with friends. As the party drew to a close, most were hesitant to leave. Teary-eyed good-byes and good-lucks were ex- changed as the reality set in that the rime has come to face new chal- lenges, make new decisions and tackle new goals. There ore three moin people that moke up the administration ot Dearborn High School. Mr. Horry Faull, the principal, hos been at DHS for o total of seven years. He was once Assistant Principal here for five years, ond then left for another position. Two years ago, he returned to DHS, os principal. Mr. Faull is held responsible for everything that goes on in the school, including the teacher's curriculum. Mr. Dill Hill, one of two Assistant Principals, has been on staff for twenty-two years. He has been in administration for sixteen years, nine in discipline ond seven in scheduling. Mr. Hill moinly handles curriculum, resting and schedul- ing. Mr. Jock Samples is the other Assistant Princi- pal and hos been with us for two years os a disciplinarian. Mr. Samples is moinly in charge of attendance, discipline, ond activities. Mrs. Barbara Eubonks, rhe receptionist, was transferred ro another school. She will be surely missed. The secretaries ore rhe backbone in administration. They work hard in keeping every- thing in working order and run- ning as efficiently as possible. They handle everything from answering telephones ro filing paperwork to typing letters and memorandums. Berry Bourgeau and Bob Stick- ler hove been doing their best in keeping rhe students in order, and enforcing rules. They help out in rhe office as much as possi- ble. Both Betty and Bob hove been here at DHS. for a few years now. and they really enjoy their work. Now, a rorol of rhree closses moy use rhe services of the library comforta- bly. The library has gained two thousand five hundred square feer from rooms rhar were rarely used. Study carrels, new desks and choirs, and more book shelves were purch- ased. Most of rhe remodeling done was for rhe purpose of lowering sound volume. The acoustical riles, bought for lowering rhe ceiling, ond rhe new corpering hove served rheir purpose in doing jusr rhor. Ninety-two thousand dollars was spent on rhe changes in rhe library, but rhe changes hove been very be- neficial. There is now more space, better references, more books, ond o lor less noise. A R T Making it Happen in Art Dearborn High Art Department is headed by Mrs. Criner. It offers classes in art such as ceramics 1 2. art and advanced art. These classes teach students the basics in each depart- ment. Art classes experiment with a wide variety of different materials and techniques in art work. It pro- vides enjoyment for the student that is “very intense in the arts and for the student just in for the fun and exper- ince. Students in ceramics deal with hand positions on the wheel and work for their own outlines. Mrs. Criner and Don Boughner discussing art terms. 40-Academics Ann Marcus puts on the final touches. The Home Economics closses cover such areas os contemporary living, interior decorating, clothing, foods, child development ond home crofts. These dosses teach the students typ- ing, record keeping, and working with computers. These skills will aid students throughout their college years, or in their personal endeavors. Here or Dearborn High, we offer three different languages; French I - VIII, Spanish I - VIII, and German I - VI. In rhe classes, stu- dents hove a chance to learn dif- ferent traditions and celebrate holidays in rhe custom of rhe country. Acodemics 49 Special Education Special Education Helps Students From The Dearborn High Special Educa- tion proqram has qrown since last year. Many of the program's srudenrs come from school districts other than Dearborn. With Dearborn High's ex- tremely qualified people reaching them, they ore receiving the educa- tion to fit their needs, needs. The Hearing Impaired program hos also expanded since the lost school year. There ore several new teachers on the staff helping these srudenrs. Many of the students ore functioning very well in dosses with other srudenrs. Whether it’s o health, hearing, speech or social problem. Dearborn High is always willing to reach out and help. Acodemics 51 Industrial Arts Teach Skills For The Future I N D U S T R I A L A R T S The Industrial Arts Department at Dearborn High has many classes to offer all students. There ore six diffe- rent areas to choose from, such as, graphic arts, drafting, electronics, au- romorives, woodworking, and machine metals. Students can rake six semesters of each except for au- romorives which is four semesters. Each doss extends valuable skills which help the students in future careers. Besides the course offerings at Dearborn, FORTRAN a computer class, was taught at Edsel Ford in the morning. Scores in the mathematics de- partment have increased over the last few years. Freshman and sophomore gym clas- ses consist of the students taking part in a wide variety of sports. They had a carnarion sale, and helped with rhe Hot Lunch Jam , a mulri-dub sponsored dance, ro set rhemselves financially. With rhe money earned, rhey par- ricipared in a hayride, a club Christ- mas party. and a pot-luck dinner with rhe AFS Club from Edsel Ford High School. SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA The 1983 Dearborn High School Symphony Orchestra went to rhe District Festival this year. The day of Dearborn High School s an- nual homecoming started off with o floor building meeting in the D.H.S. parking lor. All the dosses worked hard putting the final touches on their floors for the celebration rhor would begin or one o'clock. As the afternoon crawled upon the day, the school events began with the homecoming football gome against Southeastern. They started off rhe season with o very good game against perennial power Brother Bice in rhe Silver- dome, losing 17 ro 14 in overtime. The Pioneers came back rhe follow- ing week by defeating Wyandotte, and then by bearing league-rival Trenton in double-overtime. The fol- lowing week spelled trouble for D. H. S., os the Pioneers dropped their contest ro city-rival Edsel Ford. Their next four weeks were victorious. One of rhe Pioneers' best games was against Ann Arbor Huron, shutting- out the River Rats 37-0. The final game against Lincoln Park was a dis- appointing loss. The Pioneer offense was sparked by rhe superb running of senior rail- back Michael Gass who rushed for 772 yards, and caught passes for 303 yards. There were also quite a few Pioneer players, induding Gass, that were nomed ro rhe All-City and All- Area reams. In general, it was another success- ful year for rhe Orange and Black. Scott Mason wos the most valuable player on the team. John DeMorais was the most valuable lineman and Robert Bullis was the most valuable bock. The Pioneer Freshmen had an outstanding year, finishing the sea- son with a perfect 8 wins and 0 loss record. The Freshmen ream was coached by Chuck Baughman and John Nichols, and averaged 40 points per game. They also accumu- lated 4 shut-outs. Two ream leaders were Ken Pola- dian and Eric Monson. Poladian rushed for 712 yards, and scored 11 touchdowns. Monson caught passes for 474 yards. The Freshmen ream had a potent offense, with these two players leading the way. The Pioneer defense was led by Monson, also. He had 57 tackles and 2 interceptions. The defense allowed a mere 74 points scored against them. All bur two of the gomes the ream lost, were lost by three goals or less. Coach Paul Coombs, though, nor extremely pleased with the win-loss record, was impressed by the steady im- provement of the reom, and he looks forward to next years season. Junior, Pick Desmir suffered on injury during the season that hurt the reom somewhat, bur they went on to win a gome after that. The 1982 cross country ream hod expected to do better than they did. Although they lost only one dual meet, the injury to the leg of Robert Hellie ployed o large port in the fairly poor performance by the Pioneers in their invitational meets, with one ex- ception in the Redford Union J. V. invi- tational where the Pioneers placed second. Despite the convincing sec- ond place effort in the league meet, the Pioneers fell short of making it to the store meet os o ream with their fifth oloce finish in the reaional meet. Yet two runners, Co-Caprs. Shannon Archer and Don McHugh, were to represent the Pioneers ot the store meet. The ream won rhe League meer and title. They also qualified as a ream for Regionals and nine girls qualified individually. The nine were Lori Bonaccinie, Bon- nie Buell, Miriam Carew, Kris Ceder- quisr, Darlene Dull, Carrie Fawk, Sue Isern, Wendy Morawa and LeAnn Tomes. The DHS girls rrock ream had on awesome” season this year. They were undefeated in dual meets, and finished respectively in the relay and invitational meets. All the girls tried hard and worked smoothly as a team. Together they worked hard and the pay-off came when they won city and league. They ended the season by sending eight girls to the state meet. What an accomplishment! The team was a young team. The majority of girls were sopho- mores and freshmen. Things are really looking good for the years to come.
