Moment in Time One's high school years, though filled with many memories, are but a moment in time. Homecoming, Junior Prom, Senior Prom, numerous athletic events. Graduation, memories, are contained within a three year period. Three years, compared with the previous millions, is just the blink of an eye. Keep with you these memories and remember that you and your classmates have lived one of the most special moments in time. — Brian Du Jardin

I i I If I I I I v i » , ■■■■■rni niMiu I LL r a M The 1979 era was disturbingly marred by the taking of 52 American hostages by Iranian students demanding the return of the Shah to their country. This crisis was only the beginning of a revolution which would incidentally end after 1.3 years in captivity. With the release of “Animal House came toga parties and the food fight fad which eventually became commonplace in high school cafeterias. “Animal House vividly described the antics of life at Delta House, a college fraternity. Mork from Ork rose in popularity as did Mr. Bill from Saturday Night Live. Holocaust, an American-made fictional account of Hitler's extermination of six million Jews, aired over network stations causing severe controversial reactions from Jews the world over. The beginning of this new decade introduced new phraseology and brought new trends to the American public. With the 1980 release of John Travolta's “Urban Cowboy came the suddenly pronounced interest in western culture and ideas. Country and western music increased in popularity as did the urge for authentic western garb. Throughout most large metropolitan cities, the mechanical bull-riding craze exploded where ordinary working men and women by day turned into cowboys by night and amazingly displayed their agility and talent on conquering that ferocious, man-made creature. To successfully accommodate the western movement, producers of America's number one television show, Dallas, whose plot outlined the adventures of the oil-hungry Ewing clan, created the imaginary spoof. Who shot J.R.? For weeks on end, millions of faithful American households became hypnotized to the TV screen pondering the accused and impatiently waiting to see if their detective instincts held truth. Kristen did it. Teenage superstar Brooke Shields tantalized commercial addicts with her graceful modeling of Calvin Klein designer blue jeans. With the designer jeans overwhelminghly appeared on the national market. Traditional Levi's became memories in the minds of most consumers as they were adequately replaced by Gloria Vanderbilt, Brittania, Jordache, and Sasson. What skeptics could believe that in a democratic society such as ours, the American citizens would prefer a retired movie star to a peanut farmer in the White House. In the 1980 presidential election. Republican challenger Ronald Reagan ousted incumbent Jimmy Carter and independent John Anderson much to the dismay of national pollsters who prematurely predicted a Democratic victory. Buy American was the dominant slogan during this troubled inflationary period. Foreign products swept the U.S. market as Japanese automobile exports to this country greatly challenged U.S. production. Gasoline prices soared from $.70 per gallon of regular to $1.25 in 1980 as consumers demanded compact, fuel efficient cars. Beatle fans worldwide tearfully reunited to mourn the tragic death of legendary Beatle John Lennon, who was ruthlessly murdered outside his New York City apartment building. The 1981 assassination attempts of two prominent figures. President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II, led to highly publicized outcries from concerned citizens demanding tighter restrictions and enforcement on gun control policies. Loyal Michigan sports fans finally had reason for celebration as University of Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler proudly led his pack of Wolverines westward to Pasadena for the granddaddy of them all — the Rose Bowl. The maize and blue prevailed victorious againt the University of Washington Huskies of the Pacific Coast Conference. However, while Bo was boasting and the Wolverines were collecting their well earned roses, the Detroit Lions were also gaining nationwide recognition with their impressive season record. The financially troubled Pontiac Silverdome came alive with ecstatic patrons dancing in the aisles to Another One Bites The Dust and the rhythmic chanting of Go Billy, Go in reference to Heisman Trophy winner, running back Billy Sims. After 444 days in captivity by Iranian dissidents, 52 American hostages were released to their families amidst an array of symbolic yellow ribbons tied tightly around neighborhood trees. This reflection of patriotism in remembrance of the prisoners fostered unity in America. Nancy Havlena Julie Dalfonsi
