This crisis was only the beginning of a revolution which would incidentally end after 1.3 years in captivity. With the release of “Animal House came toga parties and the food fight fad which eventually became commonplace in high school cafeterias. “Animal House vividly described the antics of life at Delta House, a college fraternity. Mork from Ork rose in popularity as did Mr. Bill from Saturday Night Live. Holocaust, an American-made fictional account of Hitler's extermination of six million Jews, aired over network stations causing severe controversial reactions from Jews the world over. The beginning of this new decade introduced new phraseology and brought new trends to the American public. With the 1980 release of John Travolta's “Urban Cowboy came the suddenly pronounced interest in western culture and ideas. Country and western music increased in popularity as did the urge for authentic western garb. Throughout most large metropolitan cities, the mechanical bull-riding craze exploded where ordinary working men and women by day turned into cowboys by night and amazingly displayed their agility and talent on conquering that ferocious, man-made creature. To successfully accommodate the western movement, producers of America's number one television show, Dallas, whose plot outlined the adventures of the oil-hungry Ewing clan, created the imaginary spoof. Who shot J.R.? For weeks on end, millions of faithful American households became hypnotized to the TV screen pondering the accused and impatiently waiting to see if their detective instincts held truth. Kristen did it. Teenage superstar Brooke Shields tantalized commercial addicts with her graceful modeling of Calvin Klein designer blue jeans. With the designer jeans overwhelminghly appeared on the national market. Traditional Levi's became memories in the minds of most consumers as they were adequately replaced by Gloria Vanderbilt, Brittania, Jordache, and Sasson. What skeptics could believe that in a democratic society such as ours, the American citizens would prefer a retired movie star to a peanut farmer in the White House. In the 1980 presidential election. Republican challenger Ronald Reagan ousted incumbent Jimmy Carter and independent John Anderson much to the dismay of national pollsters who prematurely predicted a Democratic victory. Buy American was the dominant slogan during this troubled inflationary period. Foreign products swept the U.S. market as Japanese automobile exports to this country greatly challenged U.S. production. Gasoline prices soared from $.70 per gallon of regular to $1.25 in 1980 as consumers demanded compact, fuel efficient cars. Beatle fans worldwide tearfully reunited to mourn the tragic death of legendary Beatle John Lennon, who was ruthlessly murdered outside his New York City apartment building. The 1981 assassination attempts of two prominent figures. President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II, led to highly publicized outcries from concerned citizens demanding tighter restrictions and enforcement on gun control policies. Loyal Michigan sports fans finally had reason for celebration as University of Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler proudly led his pack of Wolverines westward to Pasadena for the granddaddy of them all — the Rose Bowl. The maize and blue prevailed victorious againt the University of Washington Huskies of the Pacific Coast Conference. However, while Bo was boasting and the Wolverines were collecting their well earned roses, the Detroit Lions were also gaining nationwide recognition with their impressive season record. The financially troubled Pontiac Silverdome came alive with ecstatic patrons dancing in the aisles to Another One Bites The Dust and the rhythmic chanting of Go Billy, Go in reference to Heisman Trophy winner, running back Billy Sims. After 444 days in captivity by Iranian dissidents, 52 American hostages were released to their families amidst an array of symbolic yellow ribbons tied tightly around neighborhood trees. This reflection of patriotism in remembrance of the prisoners fostered unity in America. Nancy Havlena Julie Dalfonsi Moment in Time One's high school years, though filled with many memories, are but a moment in time. Homecoming, Junior Prom, Senior Prom, numerous athletic events. Graduation, memories, are contained within a three year period. Three years, compared with the previous millions, is just the blink of an eye. It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the person who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives again and again; who knows the greatest enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause; who at best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement; and who at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly; so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. As you prepare for whatever the future might hold, my wish for each of you is that you dare greatly; that you experience both victory and defeat for each offer valuable lessons; and finally, that you experience the exhilaration of high achievement. The chickens were thrown on the Edsel Ford Thunderchickens field. • You ran the halls in gym. The mighty seniors built the Kegger float. • You said, When I'm a senior I'm going to ... You went to sophomore orientation and Mr. Mazur said, 'The next three years will pass by so quickly, and in no time you'll be back sitting here listening to someone explain the commencement procedures. • Everyone informed you not to purchase the elevator keys. • Cole Chambers said, I'll never get my hair cut for the swim team! • You skipped class for the first time. You visited Mr. Hill for the first time. You cruised down to Hines for the first time. • The flu epidemic hit and we only needed 27 more students absent for the school to close. You had a crush on someone and you went out of your way to see him her each day. There was a food fight almost every day in the Redwood Room. The hall monitors were hired. You tasted DHS's cafeteria food for the first time. You signed up for MOIS in the 10th grade to miss your favorite class. You cleaned out your locker. Boy's basketball became the Sub-8 League champs for the first time in 19 years. Daisy the Duck hatched a brood. Mr. Hill, Russ, and Mr. Letshe wore bunny outfits. Boy's swimming took the Sub-8 League. Nern's togas. Lauri Chamblin 79 r 9 Dearborn High presented its annual Jazz Show on Friday, May 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Valentine Auditorium. The show featured the Symphony Band, Symphony Pops Orchestra and the Jazz Band. Throughout the evening they played such numbers as In the Mood, Pressure Cooker, South Rampart Street Parade, and the Big Band Polka. 86 Sold! was the cry from senior auctioneer Tom Nern during the Spirit Week—Slave Auction Wednesday, May 13. The auction was just one of the many high points in Spirit Week, which lasted from Monday, May 11 to Friday, May 15. Events ranging from a pie-eating contest to a car-stuffing event that took place. Monday's events included eating whipped cream and then blowing a bubble with gum. Senior Barb Gilbert captured the bubble blowing race for the seniors with a time of 54.0 seconds. The marsh-mellow stuffing contest was interrupted and haulted when junior Bob Butler started to choke after stuffing 27 marshmellows. Car stuffing and the pie-eating contests were on the agenda for Tuesday. The sophomores shoved the most bodies into Tom Nern's Vega with 17. Seniors used 16, and the juniors finished last with 15. Pie-eating champ senior Bob Simmons ate his apple pie in 2:12. Some observers said that Simmons still could not compete with former senior Jamie Montgomery. who was the pie-eating champ three years in a row. Spirit Week The slave auction was Wednesday's only event. The lowest price paid was for Gary Olkowski and Dan Moore with a bid of $6. The highest priced slave was bought for $51, she was Tessa Lennis. Thursday was supposed to bring about a peanut-butter-cracker-then-whistle contest. This involves a contestant eating a peanut-butter covered cracker and then puckering up and whistling. The event was not held because of the lack of peanut butter. A cracker fight soon erupted. Slave day was Friday. Each slave had to do whatever the “master” wished them to do. Published once a year. Muse is filled with poems, short stories and pictures which are created by students currently attending Dearborn High. This years staff was small but determined. This year the First Stop had many different activities starting with the 'Guess the weight of the Pumpkin Contest' in October. The next month they had the Turkey Shoot. During the Christmas season they had the First Stop decorated well. Later on in the year they gave the students a chance to get their picture taken with Bunny Hill, Russ Rabbit, or Bunny Letche. The travelers were Dave Ossenmacher, Ernie Van bergeijk, Carolyn Koester, and Jim Elsenheimer. The campaign for AFS candidates interested in representing DHS as foreign exchange students began during the 1980 fall semester when forms were distributed and completed by all applicants seeking nomination. These students in turn were directed to the regional AFS chapter where personal interviews with members of the board were granted. Final choice selections were made, and the foursome were notified of their acceptance. 107 WHO KILLED FRED MERTZ????!! Fred Mertz, a prosperous young landlord was recently run down in front of his beloved alma mater. A respected member of both the National Honor Society and the Pretentious Club (the first social organization to officially recognize), he was loved by many. Always ready to take time out of his busy schedule to help anyone who asked, he got many school activities rolling — even producing the 1st ANNUAL GRAND TALENT SHOW (no small deal!). His generous donations of both time and money contributed, to a great extent, to the foundation of both PreCo. International and Twentieth Century Wombat, a company which produces many major events annually. Mourned by many but respected by few, the late Mr. Mertz's untimely death MUST be avenged! Although the name of the murderer ok murderess) is not yet known, he or she is believed to be in this snapshot taken, at great personal risk, at the scene of the crime. Marguerite Houston. Not only a regular poker partner but an old flame as well. It is rumored that she now has her eyes on enfant terrible. 7) Gregory Fitzsimmons. Possibly the slipperiest one of the bunch due to his consistant incosistancy. An incorrigeable youth, he is wanted in 13 colonies for grand theft auto. 8) Bubba Brownnoser', an obsequious, imprudent young lad who manages to make a fool of himself every time he opens his mouth. 9) Frankie You need a haircut Fettochini, the butler. Inherited his wealth from the estate of his late wife Janice Lafuze. 10) The stately Miss Cecily Fairchild, a staunch supporter of Fred from the beginning, now she stands in the way of her brother-in-law. 11) Gerald Fairchild. An indominatable chess player and pizza fanatic, as well as a former close friend of Mr. Mertz. Upon being arrested for indecent exposure, he was heard to proclaim, Love you all. Really! 12) Tony 'Bob' Luciano, known to be a bit eccentric, is a good hit-man and a suspected mafia contact. Perhaps best known for the famed 'computer killings' of 1976, he 'never misses'. Tony, zoned out at the moment, is in one of his more perspicacious states. 13) Another enfant terrible, Butch Fitzsimmons. Although he is the muscle of the two, he is a hopeless tranquilizer addict due to his brother's extremely radical driving habits. 14) The Quiggly brothers, Elmer and 15) Tim, Inc. As the caretakers of the estate these two are in charge of the general neat-and-cleanness of the grounds and property. 16) Last, but not least, the unfortunate late, great, and HIFHLY idealistic Fred Mertz. Spirited off to deepest, darkest Africa, his autopsy was performed in Dr. Quackenbush's private laboratory. • Note: Also worth mentioning is the Knife — a Wilkenson Sword X-Calibre special ($95.95 at most good sporting outlets). And there is also the Car — a custom Rolls Royce four-door hardtop touring coup limousine with an indash radio ($95.95 at many fine collectors everywhere). 108 Belonging to the Ski Club gives one a good opportunity to socialize both in and out of school in a healthy atmosphere. The goals of the club is safety and to improve one's skiing ability. The motto of the club is 'The better you ski, the more fun you will have. The station brought televised up to the minute news to the students by broadcasting on various days of the week. Several T.V. sets were placed in the main halls and lunch room for student viewing and enjoyment. 110 I WDHS News was on the spot time and time again for various school functions and activities. They covered such events as elections, plays, and sporting events. These informative programs were presented during lunch hours on Thursday. WDHS conducted many in depth interviews, such as election candidates, teachers, and don't forget Mr. Bill Banana. Ill THE OBSERVER During the 1980-81 year. The Observer kept Dearborn High informed of its current news events in 26 published issues. The issues published included an excellent variety of news features, student surveys, interviews, editorials, and sport news. Many awards have been achieved this year, including first place in the National Scholastic Press Association and second place in the Columbia Press Association. Seven of the staff reporters have been named to Quill and Scroll, a national honor award for high school journalist, including editor Liz Haynes, co-editor Nancy Havlena, Julie Dalfonsi, Jon Erickson, Patti Hagen, Mark Meyer, and Craig Otten. National Honor 5ociety The National Honor Societ worked hard again this year to benefit our school and our community. At Open House in the fall they guided parents to classrooms. I do have to admit that we have had some fun, but then again we've had quite a few set backs. Our first set back was the lack of a yearbook advisor until second semester. After that just about every section has had its own little catastrophe, such as: The disappearance of 800 underclassmen photos; Getting ink smeared across the front of pictures; Financial problems with the Senior color section; Difficulties with getting game scores for the sports section and all sorts of other miscellaneous little problems. Nonetheless, right now all that matters to any of us on yearbook is to get this 192 page book put together by the deadline. We only ask one thing. This was good enough for a third place finish in League, right behind Trenton and Edsel Ford. The team had many individual stand-outs. Scott Mills set a brand new rushing record of 1,108 yards. Three of the team players made the City First All-League Team, they were seniors Harold Moore, Stu Terrell and junior Dave Mifsud, as kicker, defense tackle and wide receiver, respectively. 143 J.V. Football team grab 3rd place in League competition. They were defeated only by Trenton and cross-town rival, Edsel Ford. With the potential that these players displayed, the coaches are looking forward to a very successful varsity season next year. Not only did they win all of their dual meets, but they also placed very well in their invitationals, picking up five 1st place trophies. Their greatest achievement came at State. Here they placed 2nd in the Class A State Championship, a feat never accomplished by any other cross-country team in the city of Dearborn. This year's Tri-Captains were Bill Courtney, Doug Swancutt and Mark White. They along with the other graduating Seniors, wish Coach Spain and next year's team all of their luck in continuing on this year's successful record. Jack Dunworth, had a superb season. After beating their first opponent. Grosse Pointe North, the team took off on a winning streak. They won all of their meets and captured the League crown 60 points ahead of their nearest competitor. Full of talent, and putting forth every effort to win, the state-qualifiers shaved their heads in order to better their times. Although they didn't hit the top five as they had hoped, they made the top ten and completed an outstanding season which will not soon be forgotten in the history of Dearborn High swimming. 151 1. Coach Flegle and team were hoping to place first in the League. Despite their fine, but disappointing second place finish, the team still had a successful season. The team also placed 5th in the regionals, missing fourth place by just half a point. In the city meet Bill Monteith and Jon Thomas tied for 3rd, while Steve Sedgwick and Mark Stevens picked up honorable mentions. Monteith and Thomas also earned All-League honors. 1. Of the seven divisions, they collected medals in six. The team earned its way to the state competition in Kalamazoo where they did quite well, 14th out of 50 teams. They were coached by Lou Stehlik and assisting her was Sharon Williams. •Ml 168 J.V. Tennis The girls' Junior Varsity Tennis team was coached by Sharon Williams. The team had many returning players and they were joined by a few new players. Even with the shortage of schools with Junior Varsity Tennis teams the girls managed to play in quite a few matches, and win quite a few of them too. 1. Although there were only seven girls on the squad the willingness to learn and accomplish something was constantly in the atmosphere, even though scrimmaging was almost impossible. The girls' Junior Varsity Volleyball team finished it's season in first place league victory, losing only 2 games in the season. The team was coached by Ann Hutchins and the season started out shaky when girls dropped out and the team was left with 8 players. But, despite the loss the team used it as an advantage for more court time and less bench time. The team had no major problems during the season. The players all got along well and played well together on the court, as the results show. The girls' Swimming team, under the direction of Jack and Shannon Dunworth and manager Jeannie Lukow, started off with many swimmers. Soon after, many girls quit and the team diminished into a handfull of very productive swimmers. Through their hard work, they overcame the obstacles and fared well throughout the entire season. The peak of the season came at the zi i meet. Here, the team consisting of 5 swimmers, Allyson Brown, Kelly Buck, Patty Sabo and co-captains, Dianne Hudak and Brigid Muldowney, along with one diver, Carla Barbour, took the 9th place state title. The 400 free-relay team took 12th. Sabo placed 3rd in the 200 free and 500 free. Muldowney took 2nd in the 100 breast. Brigid Muldowney received M.V.P. Pioneer Gymnasts The girls' Gymnastics team, coached by Shirley Heydrick, had a very eventful season this year. The team had few returning juniors and seniors, yet they made up for that with the sophomores who did join the team this year. The team won every one of its competitions and Lynn Bonaccinie qualified for state competition where she placed 26th. In the Dearborn Invitational the girls took 7th, they swept the floor with 1st place in league and an 8th place in the regionals. Overall the girls had a pretty good season. 1.
