The dream-like goal that in the past seemed so far into the future is here. It is now! What will come after this point in time? What will the future hold for you? No person will attempt to answer questions of this nature for you. I would suggest some generalizations for you to consider in answering these questions for yourself, questions which will help measure the degree of success you have achieved from your high school experience. Have you acquired a saleable skill—a skill for which an employer is willing to pay? Have you acquired the diligence to see a job through to its conclusion? Have you sought wisdom, not just knowledge; understanding, not just facts and figures? Have you tried to relate the past with what is presently happening and to what may happen in the future? Have you learned to be flexible and adaptable? Nothing is more constant than change. Have you developed a wholesome sense of curiosity about people and your environment-the “why and how” of the workings of these? Have you developed a genuine respect for human beings, including yourself? If you are able to answer “yes” to these questions, I would predict success in your future—success in terms of happiness, and a full, meaningful, rewarding life. May the good Lord be with you every day of your life. Len Mazur Illi 1. Bruce Singley 2. Amy Bowers 3. Michele Birch 4. Bill Knopp Marilyn Dohonue 5. Sandy Mehl 6. Diane Yura 7. CLASS Dave Stucky President Sue Sulisz Secretary OFFICERS Bill Luetzow Vice-President The junior class has been busy gaining experience and preparing for the responsibilities they will en- counter in their Senior Year. A junior sponsored dance and junior Prom are the main activities traditionally put on by the Junior class. These two activities accur in the Spring, making it necessary to raise money in the fall and winter. Besides raising money for these events through sausage roll sales, a hayride and a second place float have kept them busy. 40 Melissa Gregory Treasurer Richard Albert Adeiia Al-Saadi Andrew Alley Amy The buildings are larger, the classrooms modern, the school population greater. The number and variety of courses offered have increased tremendously, and the faculty has grown accordingly. The admin- istration no longer consists of only one principal but rather of three, since the job cannot be done by just one person. Our administration can attest to this fact. Together they put in long hours, often under great pressure, to assure the smooth operation of all aspects of what is called the comprehensive high school. Daily they try to meet our needs to prepare us for the complex world we are entering. We salute these admin- istrators for their efforts, understanding and dedication. Their payment, their reward is our choosing the right direc- tion to travel when we leave Dearborn High. To Mr. Len Mazur, our principal, who must make all the “tough” de- cisions, to Assist Principal Bill Hill, who puts us right when we go astray, and to Assistant Principal Bill Lavey who graciously supports us and lifts our morale, we humbly say “thank you” for a job well done. 78 Mr. Bill Hill Assistant Principal Margaret Banks Ann Bayer Mary Macek Ilene Giles Gail Morgan Lottie Konon Mae Wickham THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT George Arrick Donald Beesley Phyllis Braathen Russ Gibb Joe Hallissey Donald O’Hagan Ted Lowry Marie Mitchell 80 81 Eugene Snell Dorothy Wolfe ENGLISH AND SHAKESPEARE TOO 1. Communicating our thoughts and experiences about these past twelve years have been made possible through our ability to read, to speak and to write. For those of us who absorbed the most from our education, these competencies will open doors to dif- ferent careers and opportunities to lead fuller lives. In composition classes, we can see the changes in our vocabu- laries just as we have seen changes in our technology. We still study literature of the past, but we also study modern lit- erature and have not noted the differing structures and styles of today’s writers. Many of the basic truths of today's rapidly changing society are reflected there for us to ponder and wonder about. Whatever vocation or profession we choose, we’ll find the basics a real “must if we are to survive in an increasingly competitive world. Howe well we can read, write, speak and listen will affect how well we do in our pursuits. IS PROLOGUE The political and historical issues of our time have made Social Studies one of the most challenging subjects for thought and inquiry by the students at Dearborn High. In Government, students participated in real-life simulations of nominating candidates for office by utilizing the latest competitive methods in cam- paigning. The entire project culmin- ated in a gala, memoralbe Inaugural Ball. The direct involvement, role- playing method made our political system more meaningful, relevant and significant to the student. The required Social Studies classes contributed richly to our lives by giving us a deeper under- standing of the many issues that will directly affect us, now and in the future. What we learned will undoubtly be reflected in our be- havior and actions in the years ahead. We have been taught to question, to listen, to observe and to speak out on the issues. Thanks to the dynamic Social Studies De- partment, we should emerge as better informed, better involved and better prepared citizens in the changing political, social, economic, and ecological climate of the 80’s. 1. SCIENCE These were '.heyears when the DNA molecule became a controversial as well as a ‘‘household” debate in our biology classes. Recombinant DNA Research,”- should it be encour- aged, discouraged or permitted to proceed since it will have a greater impact on the human race than the unleashing of the atom? In Concerva- tion Class, we studied the effects of pollution on our health and the future of our survival. We asked why must the Pigion River be destroyed in order to supplement our needs for gas and oil? There is no doubt that our science classes, Biology. Chemistry, Physics, and Conservation, stirred our curios- ity as well as our emotions.the sciences introduced us to the reality of what is happening to us, to the biolog- ical nature of life, to our complex biosphere and to our own capabilities of altering it. There is a real need for all of us, scientists or nonscientists, to keep abrest of what is going on so that we can participate in making decisions about which direction science and technology will take. Ultimately we will be the recipients of the results of these decisions. 1. Mr. Pearson teaching his algebra class “new concepts2. Junior Caroline Keyes listening attentively to Mr. Keyser. 3. I X i NOT JUST NUMBERS This is the age of the computer, much different from yesteryear, un- heard of during the high school years of our parents. In our math courses we were introduced to Computer Math I and II which gave us the basic concepts of computer programing and computer language. We have witness- ed how the computer has affected our lives by storing information, balanc- ing checkbooks, scheduling our classes, marking our report cards and even doing our homework. In other courses such as Consumer Math, we can leam about more soph- isticated ways to live. Most of us know, as did our parents, the impor- tance of basic mathematical skills. But never before has our rapidly-changing society demanded so much of us. For many of us, upon graduation, math will become a part of a new technological career, perhaps in Bus- iness, Engineering, Health or one of many other fields which depend upon some mathematical skill. THE INDUSTRIAL ARTS AND Ron Brown Rob Dietzler Jim Hathaway Art Klisch Leon Kurczynski Carl Lohr Ron Oswalt Ray Smith Robert Suda 96 BUSINESS EDUCATION DEPARTMENTS Lucille Auxier George Chodoroff Mary Clelland Ann Kopp Gerry Kowalski Mary May Jim Monteith 97 INDUSTRIAL ARTS The years of the late 70’s, and the technology that come with them, affected our lives more than any of us realized. We grew up in the space age! We had the comforts and thrills from high-powered cars, CB's, hair blowers as well as princess phones and stereos in our bedroms. When we look back on the 70's, the skills we learned in drafting, printing, woodshop, machine shop, automotive, electronics, architec- ture, homemaking will have been invaluable, because we as humans, need to create, to craft, to feel a sense of control over our technology. The art of working with our hands is very important and very necessary to our mental health. 1. Senior Bill Knoop demonstrates his skill on the linotype machine. 2. Human Robots r ■ Calculators, computers, electric typewriters, dictating machines, col- lators, and key punch are only a few of the machine brains we have learned to operate in school as an introduction to the challenging world of business. Secretaries, clerks, stenographers, accountants, office managers, re- tailers were in demand in our era. A job was virtually guaranteed for those of us who chose to enter the field of business. When we look back, the human element has always been needed. A machine is only as good as its human controller. Our generation inherited a technology that was far ahead of that which our parents knew. And it continues to advance. With the courses and job experi- ences we get in high school, we should be able to keep up. At our 10-year reunion in ‘88, we’ll see where business” will have taken 1. All third and fourth-year classes were taught here: “Veni, vidi, vinci,” came to Dearborn High for the first time in ’77.Students interested in learning Latin came from Fordson and Edsel Ford High for the 8:30 A.M. class. Our language classrooms reflected the art and culture of the three major language areas taught in such things as wall and window paintings of the Eifel Tower in Paris and the Aztec painting of Mexico. In addition to conjugating verbs and learning vocab- ulary in German, French and Spanish, we attended plays, took trips abroad, cooked and heartily ate ethnic foods, creatively expressed our talents through ethnic art projects, such as pinata making, learned customs of different cultures and practically lived the lives of the people whose language we were mastering. Music, Music, Music.... has per- meated the halls and classrooms of Dearborn High ever since the first course in Music Theory was offered. Music, whether it was in the Band, Orchestra or Chorus affected many of us in many different ways. It en- riched our lives, it opened the doors to musical careers and for some, it gave a pleasurable, familiar tune to hum to and reminisce with. Those who were fortunate to have been part of the musical world of Dearborn High, have also had to work with dedication and sacrifice because, in addition to class time, these stu- dents must igve much of their time after school hours. The annual Jazz Show of ’77 was a sell-out filled with parents who were nostalgically hearing music of the 40’s and 50’s. But there were also many currently enrolled stu- dents and former students who know the excellence of and musical or choral performance at Dearborn High. We slaute the Music Depart- ment for its contributions in the past and for today. ...“Thanks for the memory”. ART IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER Expressing oneself through art is a talent some of have either through genetic influence or through an inspiring and gifted teacher. In the art classes at Dearborn High, we are given the freedom to express ourselves through visual and tactile media of our own choosing, each creative impulse is realized by the student through his imagination and expressed through his own hands. The Art department in general provides the student with time for thinking, solving and doing through such classes as Art I and II, Crafts, Ceramics, and Jewelrymaking. For some of us leaning toward artistic expression, jobs are available in Commercial Art, Photography and Industrial Packaging - just to name a few. Teachers assist art students seeking further study by helping them prepare portfolios of their art work. Art can be a way to vent our frustrations, to enrich our leisure time and to make a living! 1. Matt r----------------------------------- The sharing of roles in our society brought more males into such class- es as Occupational Foods and Meal Management. No longer is Home Economics a program for females only. Boys have found Interior Decorating, Food and Family Man- agement helpful in today’s bachelor lifestyle. The child development classes still attract the female stu- dent. However, with the acceptance of the “single” father raising a family, these courses will be found extremely helpful to both female and male students! Food Service is one of the fields that is growing by “leaps and bounds.” All you have to do is look at the franchise restaurants lining the highways. Or look at the “con- venience” pre-packaged food we buy at the grocery. Home Economics then provides an introduction to an industry which will grow because a very large part of our population needs its services. Another innovation added to make courses more relevant to student needs in preparing for life, is the addition of a new class called Contemporary Living offered in the spring of ‘78 for Seniors Only. The important aspects of this course cover job and career opportunities, handling budget, marriage, children and coping with disaster. Three home-ec teachers will conduct this class. Oh, for the days when boys could be boys in the gym... and girls only had to compete with their own! We also learned one important lesson that our parents just began to learn during our generation. And that was the importance of keeping physically fit - not just for fun or competitive purposes, but for better health now and tomorrow. We have much to offer to our own lifestyle and life span because of what we learned through physical education at school. Memories of our sports programs will linger on in the years to come, especially for those who played a major part - the dedicated coaches, the athletes and especially us - who were there to cheer our athletes on to victory. This year, Tracy Glass, last year's Homecoming Queen, returned to crown this year's Queen, Kelly Latendresse, as Senior Steve Smoke presented her with the Queen's bouquet. There is an opportunity for everyone to participate in the Homecoming activities. The band and majorettes provided half-time entertainment under the direction of Mr. Russo, while the cheerleaders, along with the overwhelming help from the crowd, cheered the Pioneers on to their 41-26 victory over Trenton. The Senior Sellers provided popcorn and candy, and cold pop for the thirsty spectators. Homecoming Queen is chosen through the voting of the Senior class. All Seniors submit three names of the girls who they think are fit to be Queen. Through the tally of the votes, the ten nominees are chosen . A week before Homecoming, the Senior class boys submit one name from the ten nominees. From this tally, the five girls on Homecoming Court are chosen, and the girl with the most votes becomes Homecoming Queen. After the crowning of the Queen, the track was cleared, and the procession of the floats began. Leading the procession were the cheerleaders and the American Field Service. Following closely behind was the Y-Teen Club, as they let their ‘‘spirits fly high” along with the several balloons that were released from their float. Next in line was the Sophomore Class float which stopped in front of the stands and press box. On the count of three, the Sophomores yelled, “Bury ’em!” With that, the Trojan football giant fell back and was replaced by a tombstone reading, “Trojans died Oct. 14, 1977.” Instead of soldiers, orange Reenoips marched from the trap door of the Junior Class’s Trojan horse. Reenoip-faced balloons invaded the sky as the Junior Class proved that the Pioneers will always “reign” over Trenton’s Trojans. It was not only “stew bad” for the Trojans, but also for the Juniors and Sophmores, as the Senior Class placed first in the float competition. When the right temperature of “1978°” was reached, the Trojan head was lowered into the pot and it began to stew. After losing the very successful team of Carol Wildt and Sara Hoover to graduation, the team had only two varsity debaters and relied heavily on novices throughout the season. With the advent of Coach Phyllis Braathen, the debaters did a lot of hard work to compete with more experienced teams. Besides debating in the very tough Metro-Detroit league at Plymouth, they attended numer- ous Saturday tournaments. The trip to the state var- sity debate tournament capped their season. Debaters this year included returning speakers Marty Klein and Dana Karibian, and novices Rosemary For- tuna, Yvonne Gifford, Yayoi Kushida, James Todd and Kathy Weston, all juniors. Here forensics is an extra- curricular public speaking team with a tradition of ex- cellence in all events. Last year’s team swept district and regional competitions and produced 3 state champions. This year was a rebuilding year, with the departure of a number of seniors. However, under new coach Phyllis Braathen, this year’s team has gotten off to an excellent start. Anchored by returning team members, they expect to do well in district competition, to be held here at Dearborn, and also at the annual tournament at Mackinac. 135 N z s 1978 ac If you were just listening, you would swear it was Glen Miller, Benny Goodman or the Dorsey band. With a great amount of team unity and spirit, the netwomen smashed rival teams such as Fordson, Trenton and Plymouth Salem, to achieve an undefeated duo meet record of 9-0. With high hopes of taking the League Champion- ship, the team had to share the Tri-league title with Trenton and Plymouth Salem. But things looked brighter the following week when the girls took first place in the Region, which put them on the road to Kalamazoo for the state championship. Dearborn’s netters were all in final slots in the Regional meet, except for the first and second singles. Winning Regional titles were 4th singles, Jody Klask; 1st doubles Barb Smith and Debbie Gary; and 3rd doubles, Laura Little and Kelly Korte. The team had a potent offense and a very strong zone defence. The girls did a good job and should be as proud of themselves as we are of them. They showed a steady improve- ment throughout the season. Next fall they will begin with ten returning letterwomen, but will sadly lose two graduating seniors, Jenny Palazeti and Carol Oliver. It was a good year - six wins to three losses. For the past three years the Pioneers have been the highest scoring team in the Metro West averaging in ’77 30 points to their opponents 14. Some momentous wins were over Trenton and Belleville. Losing to Bedford Union knocked the Pioneers' chance to be one of the top teams in the state. The Pioneer spirit continues to be very much alive. Although Dearborn's harriers took a frustrating fourth place in the city meet and fifth place in league, junior co-captain Tim Rauh provided a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season. Rauh took an overwhelming first in the city and a fifth place in league competition. This qualified him for state where he proved that Dearborn has one of the top fifty high school harriers in Michigan. Even though the team is losing three of its top runners, co- captain John Schriefer, Dave Visscher, and Brian Marx, Coach Herb Schroeter is optimistic about his runner’s chances next sea- son with the return of Tim Rauh and several promising sopho- mores, Tom Kessler, Mark Morrison, and Marcos Resto. 5th place League Front row (1. to r.) After eight years of service as head coach, Jim “Chief” Vanderhull was giving it up. He worked with this year’s Varsity and announced after the first game that he was retiring. The players said that it was a total shock to them, and they would have to go a day at a time. It is to play under a new coach during the season. Mr. Gene Snell took the head coaching job and had only four returning players from last year to help him. Although we only won eight and lost twelve, we will be ready next year with six returning Varsity players and two players from the J.V. The J.V. team, coached by Barry Copeland, will be turning out a lot of height and talent next season. Mr. Snell's hope for next year is of course to be number 1, but more realistically he hopes to improve and get a winning season. Our future looks bright with new talent in our Juniors and Sopho- mores. Everyone look our next season because the Pioneers are coming. GOOD LUCK PIONEERS!!!!!!! Although the season lacked dual meet victories, with only three, the Pioneers placed high in invitational competition. They strived to grab second at the Dearborn High hosted tournament, and won a respectable third at the Novi Invitational. Overall in the Suburban Eight League, the Pioneer wrestlers placed fifth. It is unfortunate Dearborn will lose its two top scorers, graduating seniors and Co-captains Tom Boyea and Paul Sidor.
