Text from Pages 1 - 216 of the 1977 volume:

“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood. And sorry 1 could not' travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, And having perhaps Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden blaek Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way. I doubted if 1 should ever come back. at Dearborn High, may never have given a second thought to the importance of our three administrators. They are the key people in charge of our “scheduled journey” in school. They make sure our trip is free from interruptions and stumbling blocks. They keep us “on the right track” headed toward our chosen goals. If we “slow down” or “stop” once in awhile, they patrol our destinations and routes making sure that we keep going even though it might get tough at times. They’re always “there” urging us not to run out of gas especially when we get around the “3-year” curve. Mr. Len Mazur, our primary tour guide, and Mr. Bill Lavey and Mr. Bill Hill assist in making our trip at Dearborn High an enjoyable and rewarding experience. When we finally come to the end of our journey, the “big 3” are there ready to help us embark on another journey which really never ends... Dearborn High's Principal-Len Mazur Assistant Principal-Bill Hill 42 Office, Maintenance and Cafeteria Staffs No organization or institution runs by itself. Yet we sometimes fail to fully appreciate those who are con- stantly there to help keep things running smoothly at D.H.S. The office staff efficiently handles the difficult tasks of keeping attendance records, preparing daily bulletins, and filing grade cards. The cafeteria workers provide a well-balanced meal day after day for students and teachers while the maintenance staff makes sure we haave a clean school each morning. Without these “behind the scenes” workers, DHS would not be able to function nearly as well, so to them we again say, “thank you!” Back Row ( . to r.): Mrs. Giles, Mrs. Konon, Ms. Gail Morgan Front Row: Mrs. Wickham, Mrs. Bayer, Mrs. Jackson. There’s an Eye-in-the-Sky! Watch out for Smokey the Bear! Get any Brown Bottles, Bottle Popper??? Good buddy! Get your ears on??? Negatory! Rolling Road Block! Drop the hammer!” Grammar, speech, mass commu- nication has taken on a new look with the introduction of the “CB.” Traveling anywhere with a “CB” requires knowledge of the new lingo of CB communication. A course in “CB” may become something of a future necessity in the English Department. With out such basic courses as, Reading, Composition and Commu- nications, the student would have to pull off the highway onto a pretty rocky and impassable trail. There’s a lot of distance to travel through in these years of high school. The choice of which English route to take depends upon one’s destination, in- terests and needs. Courses are phased (1-5) (not students!) accord- ing to degree of difficulty and learning level. There are a variety of steps from Self-Directed study, Basic Communications and Composition, Theater, Film Making, Contempor- ary and Interpretive Reading, Litera- ture (World and English), Journal- ism, Creative Writing to American Novels, Short Stories, Poetry, Drama, Mythology and Epic, Debate, Forensics, Humor and alas, Shakespeare’s To Be or Not to Be.” The blinking signals warn the driver that “speaking, listening, writing and reading” are important skills in refueling for survival on life’s road. Park at any course! It doesn’t cost much - and the time allowance is plenty. When you’re finished, you’ll be squealing your tires for another English course. And who knows.. .you may learn to under- stand - “Truck ’Em Easy”.... 1. Linda Bassett and Gary Lesinski “battle it out in Forensics. 2. Mr. Bator gives advice to his student Ann Peraino. 3. Mr. Carter and President Ford represented by students dressed and made up to resemble the two candidates, appeared before the government classes in a mock election. Although the winner at Dearborn was not the national winner, the experience of voting was “real” and “meaningful.” The Social Studies Department had 200 “miles” of history to lean on during ’76. The required U.S. His- tory classes in Culture, Foreign Policy and Perspective, gave stu- dents a sense of direction as to where our country was and is going. Sociological approaches to prob- lems and solutions of making man’s journey in life better, were “mapped” out by the students. 1. Cathy Rucker gives a big smile. 2. Mr. Ryan-‘‘Say what?! 3. Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Conservation all await around the bend. Whether it’s atoms and ions or cells and protoplasms that excite the imagination, there is something for everyone en-route through science. A student might be found dissecting an earthworm or perhaps weighing some unkown substance, but what- ever the task, it is assured that the student is acquiring further knowledge. Through various exper- iments, students really get involved with the subject they’re learning. So “Good Luck” to all those students who are embarking into the world of science. 1. In a Chemistry experiment teamwork pays off. 2. Sophomore Shelly Don carries equipment to her desk. 3. Tim Bridges seems intent on whatever it is he’s watching! I 1. Mathematics: Constructions Computers, Calculators, and The “Kilometers” we read on the “winding road” signs, as we head out of town, can only have meaning through knowledge and understanding. The conversion of our measuring system into the metric system has brought new responsibilities upon us and our math instructors. The department’s philosophy is to develop and promote an appreciation of and a facility with, mathematics at ALL levels. Courses are offered in the basics, algebra, geometry, algebra-trig, advanced math and consumer math. A recent development has been the introduc- tion and extension of our computer program. The “inroads” we make through math inevitably lead us to many creative and challenging careers in today’s technology. The opportuni- ties along the “math” road are endless for they take us into valleys of the unkown as well as over hills of discovery and grandeur. 1. Seniors labor over a test in Advanced Math. 2. Junior Chris Nowak explains a math problem. 3. Mr. Nastase's class seems interested14. Senior Molly Thayer studies A I- Trig. Industrial Arts: The Basics 60 INDUSTRIAL ARTS If you follow the “yellow line” on the highway, you know it will guide you cautiously and safely to the end of the road, no matter what the weather is. Along with this, how- ever, a car must be in good mechanical condition with a driver who has the skill and knowledge to drive his mechanical “genius.” The Industrial Arts Department offers “avenues” to prepare the student in understanding the mechanics of the automobile. Other roadways” lead to Draft- ing, Architectural Drawing, Elec- tronics, machine Shop, Graphic Arts, Printing and Woodwork which are directly aimed at future careers. You’ll find a lot of “heavy traffic in this department because it is popular and very much in demand. Because of their relevancy, students are really “tooting their horns to get in... 1. Senior Tom Lunblad shows off his work in wood shop 2. Seniors Erin McPhee Rod Golec discuss the printing of the ‘Cabaret.'' 3. Richard Pitenski gives a smile from the drafting room. 4. 5. Students working hard in their industrial classes. 61 Business: Developing Skills for Future Use Business Education is an “an ever-winding road” that touches upon many avenues of potential careers and future independence. The first “STOP” is “Introduction to Business” in which a student elects to prepare for careers in business. The course helps the student to find out more about career opportunities before making a choice. There are many “curves” along the business road that may take the student into specialized areas of Bookkeeping, typing, retailing, shorthand, busi- ness law, data processing, and fun- damentals of computer program- ing. There are also “YIELD” signs that provide the student with exper- iences and training in office, retail- ing or industrial work. “Merging,” all the students' training comes into “gear” under the title of D.O.T. (Diversified Office Training) which is a block program for senior students offering them simulated office work and continua- tion of skill development in clerical and stenographic areas. Some stu- dents make a “right turn” into Media Practicum and Community Service which offers the student basic reference skills, career explor- ation and volunteer work in school, hospitals and the community. There is never a “dead end” on the winding road into the business world... 1. Senior Barb Munan works with Miss May in data processing. 2. Linda Groves learns the key-punch methods. 3. Junior Lona Lockhart waits on senior Theresa Bloom in the First Stop. 4. Typing eagerly at work. 1. Senior Jackie Winfree works the adding machine 63 The Language Home Ec Candy Beutell Rose Lyons Carol Valasek Saralee Ward Janet Bodenmiller Karen Clements Margaret Reilly 64 Art Music Departments Dick Jones Tom Hire Jack Martin Phil Mark Anthony Russo 65 Language: The Key to Foreign Lands One need not travel to a foreign country to experience its culture, customs, and history. An alternative path is to take a language course. DHS students learn that the best way to perfect one’s knowledge of a language is to actively put it into use. One method they use to accomplish this is to perform humorous skits for their classmates. Language students also have fun celebrating customary holidays of the nations they are studying. Some that they observe are the French Mardi Gras, the German Oktoberfest, and the Spanish Pinata. Various activities planned for this year include a trip by French students to see “Le Petit Prince while Spanish students play to see Jose Greco, the Spanish Flamenco dancer. Language students, at their own expense, also have the opportunity to go to the country whose language they are studying travelling to either Spain, France, or Germany chaperoned by their teachers. In the Language Department, Mrs. Ward stresses that the class- room is merely a take-off point for what is yet to come in a student’s journey on the the road of life. 1. Steve Picard and Sally Newburg share a laugh in their language class. 2. A represen- tative of the Spanish class? 3. Tina Terrazas and her friend the mouse. 4. Senior Elissa Tabbey shows her class the God's eye she made. 5. Ann Shewchuck. Lori Lynch; and Sue Bemardi pose after their skit. Home Ec: A Necessity for Better Living The “way” to better living is through the Home Economics de- partment. Anyone whose “route” in life leads to marrying and raising a family, or learning to cook, sew, and manage a home, should consider the many courses offered in this pro- gram. The highlights of this most impor- tant journey to “self-survival” for both women and men in today’s society, includes experiences in Homemaking I and II, Clothing I and II. Emphasis is placed on consumer problems, merging careers in Home Ec, expanding skills in clothes construction. Different stations will refuel the student with knowledge about Child Development, Interior Decoration, Occupational Foods and Meal Management. Boys will find many of these courses helpful if they dicided to “move” toward the field of Commercial Food Managment. 10-4”... 1. See? Even washing dishes can be fun. 2. Some people just can't wait to get started. 3. This girl better be careful not to sew that to her top! 4. Students leam to save money by making their own clothes. 5. Ironing - a chore every mother loves. Art: Show Your Inner Emotions There’s an ART in driving along the scenic highway. One cannot help but slow down to a speed that allows a good critical look at what the Art Department offers at Dearborn High. Art I and II, Advanced Art exposes the student to different materials and encourages explora- tion of one’s own creative ideas. Art and design principles are used as a framework for the course. Emphasis on material is often the point at which a student begins. The student must stop on the highway’s paved shoulder to consi- der the miles of opportunities in the Art field, such as. Commercial and Advanced Art which offers experi- ences in the use of design, lettering, illustration with a view to advertis- ing, promotion and packaging. Turn- ing off the ignition is a necessity when it comes to Crafts, such as, macrame, batik, ceramics. These courses introduce the student in working in clay with construction of slab, coil and pot methods, glazing, decorating techniques, concentra- ting on the potter’s wheel with further individual study in hand-built ware. Beginning sculpturing will really put your car in gear, ready to take off toward an area of creativity, self-ex- pression and enrichment. ■ 1. Cardin Mason displays this scene of nature. 2. Dearborn High offers the gifted as well as the average music student countless opportunities to become a part of the musical world under the guidance of the well-known talents of TONY RUSSO and choirmaster, PHIL MARK. Under Vocal Music, one can sing in Chorus I, II and the Concert Choir. The student can then accelerate to the crest of the hill in a select Vocal Ensemble together with Music Theory which will give the student direction in college and future musi- cal study. Just around the next curve, the musician can get into high gear in either the Jazz, Pop, Symphony Band or the String, Symphony, Pops, Theatre Orchestra. Time, dedication and love of music are the three important requirements that make this particular trip smooth, enjoyable and rewarding. Many outstanding passengers in the music community have travelled through Dearborn High’s Music Department-sparked through the genius and talents of the management. I. From “conditioning” to individual sport activities to team sports, opportunities are offered to develop skills for leisure time activi- ties, and organic strength for full enjoyment of life as one journeys through the years. Coed classes under TITLE IX are beginning to make “inroads” but space problems to accomodate both need some solutions. Before reaching a destination, both PE student and coach or PE teacher must travel over rocky, stumbling trails. Eventually smooth, trails paved through effort, practice, and “folowing the road rules”, reward those who are actively in- volved. And at Dearborn, the P.E. routes are numerous, challenging and fun. The preparation for the festivities began many weeks before with each putting long hard hours into what they hoped would the winning float. For the class of 1977 this hope became reality. For the second year in a row, the senior class float took first place. The doors of the float opened to have Reeniop move out and knock the Panther Cuckoo-apparently impressing the judges for the 1st place decision was unanimous. Halftime ceremonies were led by the D.H.S. marching band. Besides forming the traditional block “D”, the band added a cupid heart-shape this year to set the homecoming mood. There was no doubt as to whether or not the players would be happy that night. The team played impressively. Norm Lockwood scored two touch- downs, and each offensive back, Chuck Baughman, Eric Tarpinian and Kevin Gotts, added to the scoring to make the final score a proud 47-0. That evening a good-sized crowd of people rSS2£r inatoumc naummchmatounicljma dfitmt Masquerade lasted into the night and was followed by dining at a fine restaurant. 1st place float - Class of 1977 Knock'em Cuckoo JAZZ SHOW On November 19th the winding road of Outer Drive that rolls in front of the school was crammed with traffic with a lot of it stopping and turning in at D.H.S. for the fall Jazz Show With a sell-out audience and the largest number of band and orches- tra performers that have been in a single concert at D.H.S., it turned out to be a real hand-clapper for everbody in the crowd, young and old alike. Some of the real show-stoppers were the symphony and concert bands, the symphony pops orchestra and the jazz band. The “final touches” were provided by jazz show dancers dancing to music played by the jazz band. Two other special events to take place that night were the raffling off of 5 turkeys and the dance that took place in the Redwood Room after the jazz show itself. The big thrillers for the per- formers was the letter of congrat- ulations from Dr. Lund, the super- intendent of Dearborn Public Schools, and the money they made for scholarships to music camps. 80 81 IN UNIFORM VOICES OF CHOIR 83 Front Row: John Swick, Gary Lesinski, Gib Nichols, Kurt Meyers, Ralph Bauer The debate team had an outstand- ing year in competition, the finest since 1969. Directed by Mr. Bator, two of the varsity debaters, seniors Carol Wildt and Sara Hoover, won two tournaments, and placed within the top eight teams in most of the season’s tournaments. Out of fifteen teams in their league, debaters Sara and Carol along with seniors Janel Brehob and Ross Thornburg, and junior Marty Klein finished third with a record of 20-4. In the district debates Carol, Sara, Janel, Marty, and Ross compiled a 5-1 record which allowed the team to compete in the varsity state finals. At state, Carol and Sara advanced to the final round and finished second among all the teams in Michigan. At the National Forensic League competi- tion, the debaters once again finish- ed second. The topic this year was: “Resolved: That a comprehensive program of penal reform should be adopted throughout the United States.” A fine novice team added to the overall success of the Dearborn debate team. The novices, juniors Craig McKee, Joanne Wagner, and Dana Karibian, and Seniors Patti Porte and Vince Shy among others, had an excellent season which included winning the Edsel Ford tournament. Although they did not qualify for the novice state finals, the team compiled an admirable 5-3 record in the preliminaries. Each night is designed to give students a better outlook for the years after graduation. This is achieved by two methods. The first is to present a college night. Although directed at seniors, juniors and sophs, are encouraged to attend. Each student is allowed three choices of colleges for the night. After attending a short orientation meeting in the auditorium, the students go to the assigned rooms to hear a college spokesman talk about the school they’ve chosen. Literature is handed out by all colleges to help students with the important step of selecting a college. The other road to be explored after graduation is a career. Career night attempts to clear up questions concerning the popular careers. This is achieved by bringing in local residents from many fields in the working world who try to help the student understand all aspects of his career choice. Both events were well attended this year and should continue to be because these nights have an educa- tional valve that’s endless. 87 THESPIANS 1st. Row : I. to r. Not since 1954 has a Pioneer football squad achieved such an impressive record as the '76 team with its 8-1 won-lost record. This was the first time since Dearborn was admitted to the Subur- ban 8 athletic league that an Orange and Black squad took a turn sitting on the top at seasons end. Dearborn, however, had to share its title with Edsel Ford when the T-Birds tied the Pioneers for the championship with a 6-1 league record. Coach Frye’s team had the edge on the champion- ship because they had beaten the Thunderbirds 20-14 on a great but controversial catch by Grant Delbecq from Dennis Scala in overtime. The fifth place finish in the league standings was also a new low for Dearborn High. There was, however, a bright spot in the otherwise dismal season. He was sophomore sensation Tim Rauh. Rauh finshed 17th in the regionals as he was the only Dearborn harrier to advance to state competition. In the state meet he finished a very respectable 45th place with a time of 16:16 for the approximately three mile course. Coach Schroeter is optimistic about his runners’ chanced next season with Rauh, and junior co- captains Dave Visscher and John Schriefer returning. 1st Row (I. to r.) Cagers had their most successful season since joining the Suburban Eight and since Coach Jim Vanderhull has coached at Dearborn High. “The 1976-1977 basketball season has been a very successful one as well as very rewarding”, stated the Coach. The Cagers 2nd place finish in the Sub-8 along, with two victories over Edsel Ford highlighted the productive year. A disappointing loss to Detroit Northwestern in the state championships ended the sea- son. In that game Dearborn was blown out in the first half but almost came back to take the contest before bowing out. Senior Bill Stuckey, Who played pivot all season, led the team in scoring and rebounding. He also led the city in rebounding. Stuckey was named an All-League, All-City, and 3rd team All-Metro West player. Defensive ace Jim Heller, senior, was named to the 2nd team All- League team, the 2nd team All-City team, and an Hon. Dan Willenborg, Brian Pinfold, Bob Marx, Mark Williams, Dave Hart, Pat Brady, Paul Sidor Despite a serious injury to senior Ed Frutig and an untimely sickness to sophomore Brian Pinfold, the Dearborn grapplers enjoyed their finest season ever in the Suburban 8 league. Led by Head Coach A1 Harris and Asst. Coach Ed Lanzi, the wrestlers finished second only to Belleville in the race for the title. Even though the second place fin- ish (2nd place league meet and 4 wins, 3 losses) was the best ever for a Dearborn squad in the Sub-8, the coaches put heavy emphasis on the fact the the D.H.S. matmen grappled their way past tough foes in numerous invitationals. Dearborn took first place in their own invita- ional, the first ever held at Dearborn High. It will be an annual event. Coaches Harris and Lanzi both felt that Dearborn could have been league champs had the injuries not set them back. Ed Frutig was lost midway through the season and Brian Pinfold was overcome with hepatitis. Dearborn struggled through the final two matches with- out the two starters but succembed to Edsel Ford and Plymouth Salem. Two wrestlers this season passed the magic 30 victory mark in indivi- dual matches. Marty Boyea and Doug Osterhoff (both seniors) were only the second and third grapplers in Dearborn’s wrestling history to pass the 30 mark. Besides Marty Boyea and Doug Osterhoff, John Rutt, Larry Bird, Pat Brady, Bob Marx, and Paul Sidor were all named on the All-City Wrestling team. Marty Boyea, Pat Brady, and Paul Sidor were all league champs in their respective weight classes. If the school has done a proper job of providing the opportunity for you to acquire an education— and we sincerely hope that we have--only the high school portion of your education is coming to a close. However, education is a life-long endeavor. It was never intended that the process should end with graduation from high school. The fact that we celebrate this point in the educational process with an event called commencement, which means “to begin”, is significant. This, then, is not truly the end of your education but rather the beginning of it. Perhaps, the most important-part of the whole process is about to take place for each of you. Our most sincere wish for you is that you find happiness, fulfillment and satisfaction in you every endeavor; that you discover the true joy of being a contributing member of this great country in which we live. Len Mazur You passed from this world as we know it, Beth Groszko yet your smile and the twinkle in your eye remain. After the tears are dried, we remember your good times, not your pain; your joy for living, not your anger at death. You are gone, still you linger with us.
