All the world waits for my coming. All the earth watches with interest to see what I shall become. Civilization hangs in the balance, For what I am, the world of tomorrow will be.” Mamie Gene Cole To the Class of June, 1973: You have been “talked to” by parents, teachers, administrators and various groups of adults all your lives. These “talks,” I’m sure, have occurred with your best interests in mind. 1 make this point to illustrate that I’m not really sure what “words of wisdom” I should attempt to impart on this occasion. If I were inclined to give advice, it would have to be the following words found in a church located in Baltimore and dated 1692: Go placidly amid the noise and haste. W ithout surrender he on good terms with all persons. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Observe the virtue and goodness that surround you; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Take kindly the counsel of years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are lx rn of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, he gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its shame, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. On behalf of the staff and the administration, our most sincere congratulations to each of you upon your graduation from Dearborn High School. Len Mazur Class of Seventy-Three Exist. Be. As incoming sophomores the first major project requiring group participation was the construction of a Homecoming float. With the slogan “Stock It To ’Em,” a second place standing was captured. To increase the treasury, a successful candy sale was then held. The class went on to easily win the Christinas hall decorating contest—a “first” for a sophomore class at DHS. Attempts were made to furnish a sophomore lounge, but after considerable research, the lack of suf- ficient funds brought the matter to a close. In February Spirit Week took place providing not only fun, but a second place victory for the sophomores. Another “first” occurred when 5(1 students from the class helped beautify Dearborn by undertaking a clean-up Outer Drive campaign. The I'gly Man collection gave the Class of’73 their last chance to work together as sophomores. And although they lost to the seniors by a mere fifty cents, a substantial amount was added to their treasury. Progressing to juniors, the class liegan by winning the Homecoming float com- petition with their entry, “Beat The Bell Out Of Belleville.” Through Imgel sales and other money-making projects, the treasury increased. As Christmas approached, the class began constructing decorations for their hall which again took first place honors. At the onset of the new year, the class made a monetary donation to the organization, “Hearing Aide.” During the week of the State Swim Meet, the enthusiastic juniors claimed first place in Spirit Week competi- tion. Once again the Ugly Man collection proved highly competitive as the class was handed a second place finish by the first-place seniors. Spring approached and several picnics were held to unite the class in an activity of good, clean fun. With the arrival of May, the Class Officers had the Junior Prom, “Colour My World,” well under way. A successful turnout emerged from this final junior class activity. Last September, the Class of ’73 finally became the “mighty seniors.” The year began with another “first”—the Fall Camping Trip. Next, the hard work of many seniors produced a Homecoming float, “Junk The Jaguars,” which the judges awarded first place. Closely following Halloween, a senior costume hall party was held. Hail decorating was undertaken next in the class’ traditional library hall. And although many hard hours of work was spent, a narrow victory was captured by the juniors. Semester break produced a highly memorable week- end for those attending the Senior Ski Trip. To inflate funds, senior selling continued, as well as bagel and candy sales. Due to the efforts of the senior girls, a successful Sponge Dance, “Saturday In The Park,” was held in March. Through the Class Officer’s effort, furniture was purchased by the Student Co- alition for the Senior Lounge, which coordinated with the class colors, blue and gold. As the year continued, the annual Ugly Man competition took place, fol- lowed by the Senior Prom, Senior Camping Trip, Graduation, and the final gather- ing of the class, the Senior Party. Throughout the three years. Miss Carol Valasek, class sponsor, offered her advice and invaluable service when it was needed. The competitive achievements are proof of the great spirit that the Senior Class of ’73 possesses. But these are not the only contributions the class has made. F.ach individual has somehow made an impact on the school, and the diverse interests and ambitions of all should lead to future success. June 1973 marks the graduation of 546 seniors from a class that has set a per- manent mark of achievement at DHS and will continue to do so in the years ahead. UNDERCLASS Now I’ve been happy lately, thinking about the good things to come, and I believe it could be something good has begun.” Cat Stevens Class of Seventy-Four ANNE KNISELY PRESIDENT ANN GROFSOREAN VICE-PRESIDENT This year’s junior class got an early start off to a good year by spon- soring a summer car wash. The funds raised, in addition to previous earn- ings, helped to buy materials used for their second place Homecoming float, “Tan Their Hides.’’ Then, the juniors proceeded to hold a dance with the theme “Junior Discoteque.” For a diversion from typical money- making projects, a ten-speed bicycle was raffled. With the arrival of December, Christmas spirit flourished as many juniors helped decorate a hall that took first place in competition with the other classes. 1-ater in the year, the juniors participated in Spirit Week activities and sponsored a suc- cessful Junior Prom. During the year the class’ sponsor, Ms. Candy Beu- tell, offered her service and advice. 62 Jt MORS MARY MOCF.RI TREASURER Brian Ackerman Debbie Adcock Carter Agee Chris Akers David Anderzak Elisabeth the sophomore class entered Deartorn High last September, they wasted no time in starting class activities. After the election of class officers, the sopho- mores immediately began work on their Homecoming float, “Is It Soup Vet?” To increase their treasury, a car wash and a bagel sale were held. The class then or- ganized a collection of various wrappers for the “Medical Ship Hope. As Christ- mas neared, the spirited sophomores color- fully decorated tlieir hall. After the new year, more money-making projects were undertaken to add to the class' funds. The sophomores also competed in Spirit Week and Ugly Man Competition with the juniors and seniors. Class sponsor Mr. Tom Muldowney, who is a toys' gym teacher at DHS, was not satisfied with toing liked “just by the guys.” As the Class of Seventy-Five’s sponsor, he has gained the friendship of many students, male and female, as well as an opportunity to provide advice and sendee when it was needed. -JIM JELAS1C TREASURER Mary Abele Danny Aboud Brad Ackermann Karen Agin Daniel Allison Bruce Ames All your dreams are on their way, See how they shine. If you need a friend, I’m sailing right behind.” Paul Simon The radiant queen, Janet Schad, and her escort, Tom Schriefer. The Class of '73 took first place again this year with their winning entry, “Junk the Jaguars!” The climax of weeks of planning and Half-time Festivities 88 ACTIVITIES preparation finally arrived on Homecoming Day, Oct, 13. Parents, students, and alumni filled the Pioneer stands to witness the tradi- tional half-time crowning of the queen. This year, the student body chose Janet Schad as the most beautiful girl in the senior class. Half-time also produced another win- ner, as the senior class captured first place in the float competition. Over 250 couples enjoyed the sounds of EPIC, as the DHS Redwood Room was Highlight transformed into San Francisco for the annual dance. After the fortune cookie crumbs were swept away, many found that they had “left their hearts in San Fran- cisco.” Below: Jubilation as the Pioneers score their only touchdown of the game. Student Coalition Executive Board Every student in DHS is a member of the Stu- dent Coalition. The Executive Board’s main purpose is to act as a body that students can work through. The Coalition continued to sponsor the forum program which was started last spring. Among the speakers at the forums were: a Dearborn policeman, a member of the Viet Nam Veterans Against the War, and the new superintendent of Dearborn Schools, Dr. Anthony Witham. The Homecoming dance and half-time activi- ties were organized by the Coalition. A record- breaking 250 couples attended the dance. Dearborn High has adopted a new orphan this year, a young girl from South America. Dur- ing Orphan Week, Dec. 4-8, more than SloO was collected through cookie sales and donations. New furniture was bought for the Senior Lounge for the benefit of future senior classes, as well as the class of ’73. Below: Secretary Richard Copp (1.) and treasurer Sue Shields r.). Flaying everything from the '20’s to the ’70’s, the Jazz Band performed at two Jazz Shows. In March the Jazz Band went into a new venture as they performed on WXYZ TV. Appearing with the band were the jazz dancers and the majorettes. The Jazz Band was also a guest performance group at the Detroit Player’s Guild. Giving a fine showing along with the Jazz Band was the Symphony Band. The Symphony appeared at both Jazz Shows in addition to giving three seasonal concerts. Each year the advisor appoints the chief editors, who usually have had previous experience working on the yearbook. They, in turn, select their staff. Under the supervision of the advisor, the chief editors direct and assist each section editor. The main elements included in constructing the yearbook are: collecting information, plan- ning layouts, writing copy, and pasting up pages. All sections have set deadlines and if these are met, prompt completion of the book is guaran- teed. Only through the dedication of the entire staff can this be achieved. Five Days of High School Madness Fastest mouth in the west, Dan Wakeman, winner of the Cake- Eating Contest. Gobbling their fastest, the other contestants couldn’t out-eat Wakeman. The seniors make apple-passing look fun. DHS’s third annual Spirit Week was held this year, March 12-16, to stir interest in the State Swim Meet held that week end. Starting off was Monday’s Cake-Eating Con- test. Junior Dan Wakeman took first place, with sophomore Bob Knoop and senior John Wolford running a close second and third. Tuesday brought the Slave Auction where members of the swim team. Coalition Executive Board, and other school-wide “celebrities” were auctioned off. All day Wednesday slaves paraded about, dressed hideously by their unbending masters. Slaves’ foolish antics amused students through- out the day, especially at lunch time. Bathtub Stuffing also took place on Wednesday. For the second year in a row, the Class of ’73 proved their togetherness as they stuffed 26 people in the tub to win the contest. The juniors came in second with 24 people while the sophomores only squeezed in 18. On Thursday, fair skies sent everyone out- side for the class games. Apple passing was won by the seniors with the sophomores coming in second. Three legging-it, sophomores Bob Knoop and Dale Wimmer came in first while seniors Pat McCaskey and Tim Sullivan pulled in second. In third place was the junior class duo of Marty Hofmeister and Rick VanVelzor. The last event was the wheelbarrow race, won by seniors Pat McCaskey and Ray Tidman. The JV team also went undefeated, winning the Redford Union JV Invitational Meet as well as the City and League JV races. After losing the first few games by such a small margin, the fans wondered if the cagers would ever get a break. But the Pioneers had an aggressive spirit and hung tough all the way. The great victory of the season came next in the District playoffs. The Pioneers put it all together and walked away with a brilliant victory over Fordson.
