PIONEER 1963 Dearborn High School Dearborn, Michigan Dedication To Margaret M. Hess- The Senior Class of 1963, with admiration and affection, dedicates this year- book. Mrs. Hess is terminating her twenty-six years as a teacher in Michigan classrooms, from those in a two-room country school to those of Dearborn High. During this time she has taught students that range from second through twelfth grade. A dedicated teacher, who combines a warm personal interest in her students with a desire for perfection, Mrs. Hess cultivates pride in a job well done and instills the desire for high performance. Table of Contents Administration and Faculty 6 Seniors 14 Underclassmen 44 Boys ' Sports 64 Girls ' Sports 78 Organizations 84 Activities 96 Index 106 The Hands of Time slowly sift a- way the last grains of sand from the beach, the leaves from the trees, the snow from the ground. Quietly, the minutes tick away leaving many memories in .the minds of the graduat- ing Seniors. Fondly, our eyes will see the memories, our lips will whisper them, and our hands will fold in rem- iniscense. Seniors; As you go forth with fresh dreams to serve mankind, some lines from Robert Burns seem appropriate. In the poem entitled, Written In Friars-Carse Hermitage, on Nith Side, he wrote: Life is but a day at most, Sprung from night, in darkness lost. Hope not sunshine ev ' ry hour, Fear not clouds will always lour. As Youth and Love, with sprightly dance. Beneath thy morning star advance. Pleasure with her syrene air May delude the thoughtless pair; Let Prudence bless Enjoyment ' s cup. Then raptur ' d sip, and sip it up. No more eloquently can you be advised: the real pleasures and enjoyments of life can be yours. Don ' t trade them off for sho rt term self-indulgence. You have been an excellent class. Your school is very proud of you. Farewell and good fortune in all things. Robert W. As sophomores, they set their goals high towards becoming the esteemed seniors. Being a small class, about 120, did not handicap them in any way, for during their three years in high school they attained great success. As juniors, they inherited the junior lounge, which gave them a place to call their own. The highlight of their junior year, of course, was the prom, held in the Redwood Room, which was elegantly decorated with deep purple. Finally the senior year arrived. The class elected Bob Hammond as their president, and under his able leadership they began plans for the busy year that was ahead of them. They began to enjoy the many traditional activities of seniors; selling at football and basketball games, enjoying the senior lounge, exchanging senior pictures, and participating in the senior play. The Skin of Our Teeth. The senior year went fast, and soon commencement time was approaching. Plans for announcements, class trip, prom, and graduation exercises were being made by the Senior Council, students, and their parents. Final activities of high school life included a field night, a class trip, cap and gown day, and their own awards assembly. At the prom, held at Lovett Hall, the seniors danced to their class song, The Way You Look Tonight, played by the Jerry Fenby Five. Bob Hammond and Judy Tennant reigned as King and Queen and led the Grand March. Tom Abrams and Bob Hammond gave the final farewell message to Dearborn High. As the band played Pomp and Circumstance, 101 proud seniors received their diplomas, said their good-bye to high school life, and looked forward to the future. TOM ABRAMS WILLIAM L. June Graduates PRESIDENT TOM NORTHRUP VICE-PRESIDENT JIM CIBROWSKI SECRETARY KAY MOON TREASURER SANDRA DRAKE The June Senior Class, led by President, Tom Northrup, has had three memorable years at Dearborn High. These years have been filled with excitement, responsibility, challenge, and opportunity. As sophomores, the goal of becoming a senior seemed far distant. The sophomore fair was the beginning of our organi- zation. We elected Pete Beebe, Pete Mitchell, Kay Moon, Tom Northrup, and Bill Wright to represent us on the Student Council, thereby taking on our first responsibility in the school government. On becoming juniors, there were more activities and responsibilities that we had to assume. With the inheritance of the junior lounge, we then had a place to call our own, to study, chat, or relax between classes. Most of us became active in school organizations and added our contribution to the spirit and character of the school. We held the Junior Prom in the Redwood Room and danced to the theme song, Rhapsody in Blue. At last the long anticipated senior year arrived. This year was certainly the busiest and most rewarding. We elected for our class officers: Tom Northrup, president; Jim Cibrowski, vice-president; Kay Moon, secretary; and Sandy Drake, treasurer. Part of their duties was to preside over the Senior Council, which is composed of one representative from each senior homeroom. To raise money for the prom and our gift to the school, we sold refreshments at athletic events, spon- sored two dances, and had a car wash; we sold book covers and class pins, participated in the senior-faculty basketball game and presented Our Town. The final months were by far the most exciting. The final plans were being made for graduation; we ordered our announcements, were measured for caps and gowns, selected commencement speakers, and prepared for the prom. The prom, which was held at Lovett Hall, was beautifully decorated with the class colors, light blue and white. Our motto was The universe is change; our life is what our thoughts make it. We danced to the music of Warney Ruhl and his band. The finale of high school was commencement. More than 300 students proudly received their diplomas. As we joined with the band for our last tribute to Dearborn High, we sang our Alma Mater . . . ' , PHILIP ABEL V. Tennis, Varsity Club, B.-Cert. BOB ACEY Football, Varsity Club, Chess Club, B-Cert. Football Basketball Wrestling Baseball Track Boys ' Action, skill, strategy— those are the ele- ments of boys ' sports. A crunching tackle, a tricky dribble, or a crucial hit provide un- matched excitement. These ingredients fur- furnish the spectators with thrills and chills. Winning or losing, the Pioneers have shown to the loyal fans action, skill, and strategy. Our capable coaching staff instilled sportsmanship and desire in the Pioneer teams. A sense of fair play and hope al- ways made D.H.S. a difficult team 64 Cross Country Swimming Tennis Golf Sports to beat. On the field or off the field the Pioneers displayed spirit and enthusiasm. D.H.S. competed with vigor and energy in nine varsity sports. Each pioneer team contributed a distinguishing mark to the 1962-1963 season of the Huron Rouge League. League. Memories of this year ' s athletic campaigns will never be forgotten. May the future teams of D.H.S. compete with the same vim and zeal as the teams of 1962-1963. 65 Spirit and Determination First row: Jim Baker, Bill Backensto, John Vennstra, Russ Morgan, Jim Henry, Mike Padgett, Captain; Laird Warner, Chuck Lillie, Jack Radcliffe, Rick Steckley, Norman Schleif. Varsity season was filled with many bright spots. Our record— three wins, four losses, and one tie— is not truly representative of the grid- iron season. Determination jnd spirit highlighted the Pioneers ' efforts. Captain Mike Padgett anchored the D.H.S. de- fense with crunching tackles and all-around good play. Every player contributed a maximum effort in each game, and four Pioneers ' gained All-City recognition. We hope that the future football teams of Dearborn High exhibit the same energy as the 1962 squad displayed. The Varsity Club promotes school spirit and an active interest in sports. By earning a varsity letter in any of the nine recognized sports -football, basketball, swimming, wrestling, cross country, baseball, tennis, golf, and track— and maintaining at least a C average, an athlete may become a member. This group contributes much in keeping the school spirit high and making our school the fine one it is. BOOSTER The Booster Club has succeeded in promoting school spirit this year. Some of the accomplishments of this organization are the making of posters to publicize the games and chartering buses to some of the out-of-town games.
