Practical experience is acquired by actual work on various projects. Students of the wood shop learn to operate the lathe, drill press, and mec- hanical saws, while machine shop pupils use cutting tools. The electricity shop specializes in the operation of electrically driven machines. Members of the gen- eral shop choose the medium with which they work. Mechanical drawing is another course which is offered by the vocational de- partment. This course includes construction work which necessitates pictorial drawing, shading, dimensioning, measuring. and lettering. The students must be able to apply basic mathematic skill in their drawings. This course also ac- quaints them with the process of blueprint making. Print shop is a course which lasts for three hours. It gives the students an opportunity to learn the basic principles of the printing trade. They print most of the printed material used by DHS, such as the school paper, advertisements, and copy for the PIONEER. ...AndThoseWhnWork BehindTheScenes Miss Whipple and Mrs. Rogers, the school librar- ians, attempt to bring literature to the students here, at DHS. They also conduct an elective class of lib- rary practice, for all interested students. Mrs. Nulf, the school nurse. takes care of school emergencies, helps with personal and community health problems, and conducts programs which check the individual student's health. Mrs. Metzler, the speech correctionist, helps all students who have defective speech so that this defect will not hamper their social and academic pro- gress. Dearborn High's office staff consists of six girls who have the job of keeping the school's records, and who are responsible for student recommendations and placements. Attendance, assemblies, scheduling, and the distribution of working papers and school supplies are but a few of the many things taken care of by this competent and essential part of the school. Nine women on the cafeteria staff prepare about 200 plate lunches a day. Each woman has a special job to do. These jobs consist of a general cook and assistant, a pastry cook, one who prepares the de- serts, one who makes all salads, one who takes care of the malt machine. and one general manager who helps wherever she is needed. Janitors and janitresses are the ones that keep our school looking neat and clean. The DHS staff is com- posed of twenty-two of them, six men and sixteen women. Each janitor and janitress is assigned to a particular post as are the cafeteria women. Row li Klzilguirct .lnrlvrr-on. Ruth fliirgvss, Stella Rushing llolwcs Laiirlfh.
