M.A. Dearborn High's language department offers four languages: French. German, Spanish, and Latin. Students learn not only to speak the languages offered, but they also learn many foreign customs and beliefs from their readings. Each language is taught for two years, or longer if demanded. Through competative sports the participants are taught sportsmanship, honesty, and co-operation. They, in turn, develop good character and citizenship. Mrs. Russell, the head of the girls' physical education department, directs a program which stresses both physical exercise and personal hygiene. During the fall, field hockey and track make up the program. The winter schedule con- sists of basketball. volley ball, and mass games. The spring program has softball, bowling. shuffleboard, and court sports. Through the whole year dan- cing and calisthenics supplement the regular schedule. Boys' physical education classes are designed to promote physical and moral health. Touch football is the, major fall sport, and basketball, soccer. and mass games make up the winter schedule. These groups often provide entertainment for school assemblies, football games, and other outside activities. The chief purpose of the department is to teach music apprec- iation and group participation. The art department at Dearborn offers classes in both art and crafts. Art stu- dents learn to work with different materials and the more talented artists of his group do work for the PIONEER. Craft students learn to work with wood, stone, leather, and clay. Both classes display their handiwork in the showcases of the main lobby. These elective courses count a half credit per semester. Pictured on the left is Mr. Smith who is conducting his gir1's Glee Club. Mr. Ferguson's craft class, which is or the right, is busy at work. A
