Dearborn High's social science department offers courses in six subjects: world history, American history, civics. economics, sociology, and psychology. To graduate, a student must have one years credit in American history and one half year's credit in civics. Econ- omics, psychology. and sociology are electives, which are a semester in length and worth one half credit. Aims of the social science department are to encourage comprehensive read- ing, analytical thinking, and systematic note taking. Through the achievement of these aims. the department hopes to develop the student's understanding of social. political, and economic problems and to help him appreciate his democratic heritage. A special effort is made to relate past history to present day problems. as a historical perspective is needed to understand modern pol- itical developments. All of the social science courses place special emphasis on the necessity of accepting the responsibilities and privileges of a democracy. HA. M.A. B A. M.A. -i 5 .
