In Memory of Alumni Who Gave Their Lives for Their Country Rouge Bouquet n In a wood they call the Rouge Bouquet There is a new-made grave to-day, Built by never a spade nor pick Yet covered with earth ten metres thick. There lie many fighting men, Dead in their youthful prime, Never to laugh nor love again Nor taste the Summertime. For Death came flying tyough the air And stopped his flight a the dugout stair, Touched his prey and left them there, Clay to Clay. He had their bodies stealthily In the soil of the land they fought to free And fled away. Now over the grave abrupt and clear Three volleys ringg And perhaps their brave young spirts hear The bugle sing: Go to sleep! Go to sleep! Slumber well where the shell screamed and fell. Let your rifles rest on the muddy' floor, You will not need them any more. Danger's pastg Now at last, Go to sleep! There is on earth no worthier grave To hold the bodies of the brave Than this place of pain and pride, Where they nobly fought and nobly died. From the wood called Rouge Bouquet, A delicate cloud of bugle notes That softly say: Farewell! Farewell! Comrades true, born anew, peace to you! Your souls shall be where the heroes are And your memory shine like the morning star. Brave and dear, Shield us here. Farewell! - ------Joyce Kilmer Z Z .C 4 14 '1 - n 1 4, . SPONSORS GIRLS' SPORTS ' The G.A.A. sponsors all girls' intra- mural sports. Three major sports, hockey, basketball, and softball, constitute the main activities of the club. In the 1951-52 spring season, seniors won the championship for softballp in the 1952-53 fall season, sen- iors again won: and the juniors captured first place in the winter basketball season. Bowling is yearly growing into a major sport, as is swimming. Minor sports, those played on an individual basis, are ping- pong, badminton, and tennis. HIGH STANDARD SET To he eligible for membership, a girl must have proven .herself to be interested in participation in athletics and must have the attitude of good sportsmanship and fair play. Through sports held after school, 115 points in the fall semester or 135 in the spring must be earned before applying for membership. After a girl is initiated, points are earned toward awards by participating in the sports and the club's fu 'ftf' . v T 1 'f INITIA ION SERVICE A formal initiation service is held twice a year. This year because of many transfer students, a special initiation was held in the fall. An award banquet is held usually a week after an initiation in which seniors, new members, and those who have earned awards are honored. An annual Christmas party is held, when mothers of the girls are special guests. Playdays are held with Fordson, in which the girls compete in volleyball and basketball. Numerous playnights of various sports are held throughout the year. POINT SYSTEM USED A sophomore usually earns 350 points, which enables her to receive her class numerals and first stripe. To earn a small D and second stripe, one must have 750, commonly achieved in the junior year. A senior usually has 1200 points for her large D and third stripe. In order to earn the G.A.A. gold pin and fourth stripe, one must have 1600 points. The top award, though rarely obtained, is the goal of every member. SMITH TROPHY AWARD ED The G.A.A. Achievement Trophy lDorothy Dickinson Smith Memorial Tro- phyj is awarded any semester in which three or more seniors have received gold pins. By secret ballot members select one of the candidates who in their opinion has excelled in athletic contests, has shown strong leadership qualities, and has displayed all chlracteristlics per- taining to good sportsmanship, all of which are symbolic of the trophy. Ashley PIONEERS Pioneer cagers with two remaining games in the regular season have not compiled an outstanding record winning seven contests against six losses. Despite the unimpressive season the cagers captured the City Championship by defeating both Fordson and Lowery and have cinched a tie for third place in the T.V.L. Though the Pioneers have had a mediocre season thus far, they are regarded as a threat in the State Regional Tournament by their competitors and in their role as underdog could very easily take the Tournament by storm. CITY CHAMPIONSHIP Pat Utley made good on two free throws after the Hnal buzzer had sounded to give the Pioneers the City Championship and a 41-39 victory over Fordson. He was awarded the free throws because of a foul committed against him in the last remaining second of the game. Utley and Gordon Keiser with 12 points each were the top scorers of the rough and tumble contest that kept the capacity crowd in a frenzy from start to finish.
