Pmnwn.. meelling. cfzalfeugwi facing fzaaqawzfi waking Me an known Chuck Otis, Class Presid A E E Lv 6 6' 5 f. fy ,K B Mr. Harvey Lowrey, Superintendent of the Dearborn Public Schools, has been supervising this school system since February 15, 1922, and he plans to retire at the close of this term. We of Dearborn High, although we have known him only during the past two years since the consolidation of Districts Seven and Eight, appreciate the work he has done. At this time we offer our congratulations for a job well done and we sincerely hope that Mr. Lowrey will enjoy the rest he so richly deserves. Mr. Lowrey received his A.B. degree from Central Michigan State, and his M.A. from the University of Michigan. Mr. Ray H. Adams, Deputy Superintendent, has charge of hir- ing teachers for the Dearborn Public Schools. Dearborn High regards Mr. Adams as a favorite son, because of his close rela- tionship to this school. Before the two Dearborn school districts consolidated he was Superintendent of Schools in District Seven and had his office in Dearborn High School. He received his A.B. at Western State, and his M.A. from the University of Michigan. BOARD OF EDUCATIO Grant Burns John E. Alexader SeC1'etal'Y Vice-president Fred Beard Francis A. Riley President Treasurer Robert E. Schoens Gefirge E- Brady Trustee Trustee Martin A. wellna Trustee Boards of Education often have been called Bored of Education. The pun would not be applicable to Dear- born'5 Board, however, for this policy-making group is kept busy most of the time formulating new plans and carrying out others in order to maintain Dearborn's high standing as a school system. Dearborn is not only the fifth largest system in the state, ranking only after Detroit, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Flint, but it is also ranked as one of the outstanding systems in the state and in the country. Hiring competent teachers, providing fine buildings, and making sure that each student has every opportunity to receive a sound education is the job of this Board of Education, and these seven men conscientiously Work toward that goal. MEET THE PEOPLE WHO U SCHOOL With great patience and fortitude, Principal Otto H. Olsen directs the course of human events at Dearborn High School. It is Mr. Q1- sen's belief that responsibility goes hand in hand with privilege. He feels that in a demo- cracy everyone should be Willing to do his part. This explains why student government is so important at Dearborn High. Mr. Olsen re- ceived his A. B. from Central Michigan State, and his M. A. from the University of Wiscon- sin. Miss Amy Betts served as Assistant Principal during Mr. Challis' absence, and now holds that position jointly with him. However, most stu- dents are more familiar with Miss Betts in the capacity of an adviser. She has become a local information bureau and her judgment is sought on any question pertaining to enrollment or curriculm. She received her A. B. at Hillsdale, and her M.A. from the University of Michigan. Dean Challis, Assisant Prin- cipal, has just returned to the position which he left in 1943 to serve as a Lieutenant in the navy. He now teaches aeronautics and relieves Mr. 'Olsen of a great deal of work. Mr. Challis received his A. B. from Michigan State Normal, and his M. A. from the Uni- versity of Michigan. Miss Mildred Mitchell, who was Acting Assistant Princi- pal and attendance officer during Mr. Challis' absence, is now devoting all her time to the latter duty. Just how well she excutes her duties is easily seen in Dearborn High Schoolis good atten- dance record. She received her A. B. from the Univer- sity of Kansas, and her M. A. from the University of Michigan. 1 1 1 FACU LT 1 L I' y. l I 1. 1 1. af 11 1. le at nt J1 E. Male Callj' senior girls' sponge dance, chairmaned by Catherine Bowyer, initiated the fall social season and in March the class dance, f'Coonskin Caper,', fea- turing newspaper decorations, door prizes, and entertainment proved to be a tribute to Bob Mil- osch and Bill Lawther's enthusiastic planning. Best Foot Forward, senior class play, with a super cast and Nora Amerman as student direc- tor, was tops in entertainmeint and the class party in the cafeteria following the play was a fitting climax. The senior fountain, which this class estaablished, and the Alumni Reunion of May 17, which this class helped sponsor, were other proofs of Forty Six's leadership in school affairs. First girl president of the Student Council, Mar- guerite Hutchison, and class senator, Martha Moore, begin the list of Leaders in Adminis- trative Circlesf' Forward looking policies of Jim Holbcck, Merle Cable, Maxine Moore, and Don McIntyre, who officered the January class, and of Chuck Ctis, Denzil White, Martha Scheonhals, Maureen Golden, Margaret Eschbach, Victor i. , , .7anuary grad: posing in cap: and gowns for posterity arc: scared, Fred Krafl, Lillian Girlz, Bcity .lane Ratlis, Cliarlrs Hummel, Gloria l'lIannz'ng,' standing Rose Mari: Rallu, Dave Coopcr, and Dorothy Lakes with lzcr bark to tlir camera. Jamiesfn. and Tom Zick were evidence that their class- mates had exercised good judgment at election time. Academically we take special bows to Maxine Moore and Ellrose Eichenlaub of the January class and to Joyce Gould and Joanne Johnson of the June class. In D.H.S. it woul' seem that beauty goes hand in hand with brains. Three letter athlete and Varsity Club President, Bill Grigg, Cross Country Captain Ralph Hargraves, :footballers Bob Potthoff, Allen Aldrich and Earl Danes, Varsity Clubbers Bob Neithamer and Melvin Sartin remind us of games and meets not soon to be forgotten. On the distaff side are Sue Wilcox, G.A.A. president, and some of her cohorts Dolores Lloyd, Doris Boyle, Norma Fukalek, and Pat Nicholson. Cheer Leader Jeannie Loftis kept the student body en- thusiastically yelling for school teams. Dramatically speaking, we think of Betty Jo McGuire' talented performances, of George Peppard's professionally rendered ad libs, of Johnny Schuh's enthusiastic contri- butions to school plays, and of Aaron Schrader's unforget- table characterizations. Musical talent was plentiful .... Jeanne Metelski excelled as a pianistg Charlotte Parham, and Margie Trost provided vocal entertainment, Jack Hunsicker represented the clas in the school band. Journalist Ben Riddle edited a newsy OBSERVER and alon with Faye Caughey and Maureen Golden was rewarde by being chosen for membership in Quill and Scroll. Artistic Lillian St. Dennis, Virginia Hollingsworth Shirli Symonds, and Allen Jay were responsble for some of th outstanding displays in the lobby show cases and for arf istic contributions to the PIONEERf Honored for scientific achievement were David Cooper Oliver Boss, Chuck Otis, Joanne John ' Briggs and Ralph Vogler. Between Yogi I-loedl's famous DHYUGS, MGT- ny Holbeck's athletic prowess, and Bill Her- sey returning to DHS after moving to lowa, the class has had one adventurous happening after another, Concluding the list of who's who in '47 ---- There's Glenn-Myers, trackster Varsity Clubber, better known as the Lord Byron of Wetz's sixth hour geometry classg Louise Rutledge, author of The Fighting Fivei'---a tribute to the Re- gional Basketball Championsg the movie star- rish doubles---those Morton Twinsg and athletic big wigs LeClair, Tiseo, Sebring, Nieman, Of- ferman, and Schlunt. They seem to have blossomed forth with limitless talent. Earning their track letters were Clarence f'Bud', Smith, Dick Henson, and Wayne Timm. Last, but not least, Tommy Wil- lemstein was awarded a D for managing the basketball champs. Representing the Finer Arts are Helen Mitchell, who is remembered for her piano rendition of Star Dust , Dolores Rivard, a versatile painterg and Dick Hall. who has advertised many activi- ties with his posters. Club-minded are Loretta Baron, Junior Girl Re- serve prexy g Wayne Timm, Sharon Murphy, Jack Boyd, Tom Fidge, Dick Welkenbach, and Clara Davis, who are Senators on the Student Councilg Jeanne Walters and Lee Beard, ACUV1' ty Board members. Seen everywhere at any time are Allen Baugh- man, behind the wheel of his fire-red automo- bile g the Mutt and Jeff team, George Gil- fillan and Albert Bifanog and of course, nobody misses a cheer for the team when Helen Mac- Pherson and Lois Fehlig are doing the leading. These are but a few of the social celebs that belong to the class. The School Board has seriously considered pay- ing Clyde McGuffie for the valuable things he's been teaching his teachers. Also, a vote of appre- ciation is due Paul Guimaraes who keeps the school well supplied with photos. The class's feature activity for the year was Blue Rain Rhythm, a skirt and sweather dance, which was presented under the guiding hand of Mr. Reincke, their class sponsor. THE CLASS OF 1949 NEVITABLY this class will be known as Forty Niners , for January and June of 1949 mark their respective graduations. But a distinctive name is not their only claim to fame for already these underclassmen have made themselves known by their activities and achievments. Looking down the class roll, an onlooker is im- pressed by the many familiar names listed there. It seems that this class is completely made up of the brothers and sisters of the mem- bers of the class of '46, To begin with there is Amy Jickling, Bobby Hutchison, Albert Fletke, Lucille Gamber, Donna Nicholson, Bill Beers, and Amorette Miller. Personifying the Three Musketeers are those inseparables--Don Warren, Bob McCartney, and Joe Anderson. To cause hearts to beat faster as they stroll down the halls are Harry Birchard, Bill Hengy, Ann Mara, and Joan Garrison. In the scholastic Hall of Fame we see such names as Ruth Thon, Fred Chadwick, Dave Shute, Mary Jean Foley, Barbara Shaw, Bob Siegel, Evelyn Jacobson, Tecla Sund, Frank Yesh, and Norman Gibson. And at the Atomic Shuffle the 9A's, under the sponsorship of their Grade Adviser, Miss Hainline, showed even the knowing upperclass- men how to put on a top notch party. fey. Its trials and tribulations have been many, but due to co-operation it has become a substantial, stationary governing body. Each year as Spring rolls around there is a mad scramble to make posters for political parties, which are backing candidates for office. Elected in the last all-school election were: Marguerite Hutchison, sen- ior, as president, and Jack McFeggan, junior, as vice-president. Betty Taepke was appointed sec- retary. Each class voted to elect its senators. The Senate includes committees which regulate hall traffic. initiationg into clubs, and social functions. There are usually three members of the senior class on the Supreme Court, the other two being from the Junior class. The Court takes charge of the electons in the late spring of the year for the next school year. During the year they take care ofthe QB senators' election. This year's board includes ---- Student rep- resentatives: One from each class Cyou can see them aboveb---Faculty representatives: Mr. Gwin- nell, Mr. Bartlett and Miss Mitchell ----- Administrative representative: Mr. Olsen. The Board was first established in 1939. Since then its members have given Dearborn High students a well rounded activity program. H. S. thinks highly of their policy---to give more activities to more students at a smaller cost per person. RDER and neatness in the halls are maintained by the hall monitors, captains, and The Halls Com- mittee. This activity is pursued by some 100 capable and willing students each semester as a service to the school, to visitors, and to many bewildered new students. The Halls Committee, which is composed this year of Joanne Johnson-Chairman, Ken Wolfe- Wayne Timm, and Ruth Thon, is appointed from and is responsible to the Student Council. The most important duties of the committee are to 'select the Captains and hall monitors from the many applicants, and to constantly remind the captains monitors, and students of their duties as a citizen of D. H. S. The first semester captains were: P. Harrison, C. Otis, I. Slebodnik, E. R. Eichenlaub, R. Norberg, W. Timm, and S. Murphy. The captains this semester are: L. Rutledge, J. Bianco, R. Its members are Juniors and Seniors selected on the basis of Service, Scholarship, Character, and Leadership. Students chosen are initiated at the honor assembly held at the end of each semester. Membership is not only a reward for past achievments, but it carries with it the responsibility for serving the school as a student leader. The gold pin worn by those selected signifies that the person is a well-balanced, capable individual, interested in maintaining the high standards of the school. HE highest honor to be won in the field of high school dramatics is membership in the National Thespian Dramatic Honor Society for High Schools. Dearborn High received its charter in April, 1944, when twenty-one students were initiated as charter members. Miss Jessie Church is troupe sponsor. Invitations to membership are given to those who have participated with merit in high school dramatic activities, both acting and production. The society is honorary only in that students are honored for having met certain requirements which indicates that they are ready to assume greater responsibilities in dramatic work. , Thespians First Row: M. VEN though the team was seriously slowed up Eby the loss of several players, Dearborn High came out on top in her football schedule for 1945. The Pioneers' opener with Berkley startled them a bit as the latter handed them a 6-0 shut-- out. Dearborn, however, turned around and won her next five games with Melvindale first on list 17-23. Next was Birmingham with the more en- couraging tally of 24-0. Again she was victor, this time over Ecorse C15-65, then over Lincoln Park with the still better score of40-6. The Adrian game marked the last Dearborn victory C26-75. It was a sorry day that the Dearborn lads rode out to meet the Wayne HFour Flying Horsemeni' for they dished out a 46-0 shutout Cincidentally, Wayne went through her whole season undefeated and most of their shutouts were much worse than Dearborn's lossb. Rouge also defeated the home- town boys 27-6 and finally the Fordson Tractors took the city crown, 20-6 Ca heartbreakerj. Dear- born scored 118 points in her regular schedule and had 100 points scored against her Calmost half of these were Wayne'sJ. It was remarkable that even Dearbornls well co- ordinated teamwork could pull them out of the rut caused by the absence of three of her star players. All three, Jim Holbeck, Merle Cable, and Wendy Bowyer did a remarkable job while with the squad. Both Cable and Holbeck were unable to play because of injuries gained at the begining of the season and so they finished by doing a great job coaching the reserve squad. Bowyer reached the age limit on athletic competition in high and was unable to finish the season. As a final climax to the season's struggl annual Football Bust was held at the De Inn in honor of the squad and the good work by them in the past season. Jack Rabe, head of the Pioneers, Rex Anderson, assistant and Frank McIntyre, 'B' team coach were all cial and honored guests. Bill Grigg, chosen by team as most valuable player, was given the wanis Most Valuable Player Award for his out standing support of the team C-Grigg had the high est gaining total of anyone on the team and man: of the touchdowns scored by him were made afte runs of 75 yards and morej. As special speaker 0 the banquet, Cecil Isbell, head coach of Purdug University, made a big hit along with Johnn. Greene and Bob VVestfall, Detroit Lions stars. 1 major letter awards were given plus numero minor letters. - g Many of the boys will not be with the team neil season either because they will graduate, hav graduated or are in the service. They are Bly Grigg, Chuck Otis, Vic Jamieson, George Peppar Denzil White, Al Aldrich, Jim Holbeck and Mer Cable CJanuary gradsb, and Bob Potthoff. As 0 may easily see this is a great loss to the team. The Fighting Five were victors in 12 of the 15 games played in their regular season schedule and seven out of eight regional contests played. They copped Winning honors over De LaSalle, Grosse Pionte, and Royal Oak. All told she finished the the newly named Twin Valley Conference League championship and the first Class A regional that she ever won. Coach Frank McIntyre had a great deal to be proud of when hs cagers, who were a short team to begin with, beat so many of the taller teams in the league. They were further handicapped by having but one regular, Bill Grigg who was also captain and high scorer for the season, back ,. ,,., 1 . . ,, ,,. ,. from the preceding year. The team was the smallest that Dearborn had had for the past six years and yet her aveerage was more admirable than in as long a time. The Pioneers scored a total of 450 points in their regularly scheduled games and 109 points in the regional playoffs. This gave them an average of 23 points per game in scheduled con- tests and 14 points per game in the regionals. Grigg was high scorer with 127 points and the others trailed not too far behind. Complications arose when two of Dearborn's regular players, Jim Holbeck and Merle Cable, graduated in January of '46. Their positions were easily filled but again in '47 21 loss will be felt as both Grigg and Don Seward will grad- uate at the June commencement.
