THE PIONEER ★ ★ ★ YEARBOOK OF DEARBORN HIGH SCHOOL DEARBORN, MICHIGAN PRINTED BY THE DEARBORN HIGH SCHOOL PRESS Superintendent Ray H. Adams Principal Otto H. Olsen BOARD OF EDUCATION Paul D. Caliow Roy D. Renton George W. Bird Guy E. Christian John L. Carey President Secretary T reasurer . Trustee Trustee Board in session. (Right) SCHOOL DAYS consist of pleasant associations and friendships and only occasionally do world and national affairs penetrate the consciousness of the student. The Pioneer has reflected these attitudes in former years. However in the issue of 1942, it recognizes the fact that the nation is involved in a gigantic conflict. Defense vocational classes have been organized to enable adults to learn the essentials of various mechanical trades. First aid is taught to a large number of pupils and teachers. Air raid drills are held to insure the safety of everyone. A Jr. Red Cross Council has been started which has already contributed many articles such as knitted goods and scrapbooks to the American Red Cross. Moreover, these new activities are all carried out in addition to the normal, routine work. This phase of school life justly deserves an important place in the 1942 Pioneer. ri The academic and practical side of vocational education are shown in these pictures of night defense classes. Boys in the machine shop manip- ulate machines skilfully. (Right) Hammer and saw are often in use in the woodshop classes. (Below) STOP Red Cross knitting and air raid drills make up two of the school’s defense activities. These are the pro- motors of the Buy a Bomber campaign. (Above) Several times a week defense stamps are sold in the main lobby. (Above) Miss Betts takes care of the school’s enrollment problems. (Right) Front columns of the building shadow the library and home ec rooms. (Above) Student leader commands attention in this I history class. (Left) Huge furnaces need a building by themselves. (Below) Mrs. Ives, the school nurse, is supersaturated with healthful in- formation. (Left) Hard playing and good competi- tion provide exciting pastimes. (Above) 11  1 1 that line!
