The scarlet cross, edged in gold, represents Richard DE WERT,s service as a Hospitalman with the U.S. Marine Corps. The anchor and globe are adapted from the marine corps emblem, and also symbolize the worldwide mission of the ship. The taeguk superimposed thereon denotes DE WERT's service in Korea, where he gave his life. THE CREST The Crest commemorates Richard DE WERT's conspicuous gallantry, for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor, represented by the reversed light blue star. The four rays, for hope, represent the four times DE WERT courageously exposed himself to enemy fire to save his wounded shipmates. The small stars represent valorg the sprigs of oak, strength. The ship's motto f'Daring, Dauntless, Defiantl' expresses the courageous sacrifice of DE WERT, and serves as an inspiration to the men who man the warship named in his honor. USS DEWERT it 5

Commander Richard David Uyak United States Navy Commander Uyak, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, graduated from the university of Akron in 1976 and was commissioned through Officer Candidate School in 1977. His initial assignment was to USS NIMITZ CCVN 685 in the Deck Department, deploying twice to the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean. In 1981, Commander Uyak joined the precommissioning crew of USS CALLAGHAN CDDG 9945 and served as Navigator following commissioning until November 1982. Commander Uyak attended the Naval postgraduate School in Monterey, California, majoring in Weapons Engineering and graduated in 1985 with a degree of Master of Science in Physics. Following Department Head School in 1986, he served as Combat Systems Officer in USS COMTE DE GRASSE CDD 9745, deploying to the Mediterranean Sea. In February 1988, he relieved as Assistant Chief of Staff for Communications on the staff of Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group EIGHT, serving until April 1990. During this tour, he deployed with the Theodore Roosevelt battle group to the Mediterranean Sea. Commander Uyak was Executive Officer in USS CONOLLY CDD 9795 from June 1990 to November 1991. Ashore, Commander Uyak served on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in the Surface Warfare Division CN 865. In addition to various service and expeditionary medals, Commander Uyak has earned the following personal awards: the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal Ctwo awards5, and the Navy Achievement Medal. He is married to the former Brenda Stuart Tierney of Virginia Beach, Virginia. They have three children: Brian, Kelly, and Kathleen. USS DEWERT it 7
