T 0 PETER J. DE SMET Peter J. De Smet came to St. Louis from Belgium in 1823. After completing his theological training he began his life as a Jesuit missionary in America. His apos- tolic enthusiasm and missionary spirit led him to establish missions and schools from St. Louis to the far Pacific Northwest and he became one of the most influential missionaries in Mid America. Father De- Smet's name and his motives were held in deep respect by his many Indian friends and associates and his influence in the historical and cultural development of the West has been honored by the United States Government. It is the life, the spirit, and the works of Father De Smet that are memorialized in the name De Smet Jesuit High School. We proudly and happily dedicate our first yearbook to him. Q
