was-r KICK-OFF SEASON A SUCCESS The De Smet soccer team finished up its first season with an excellent re- cord of five wins, one tie, and two losses. Much credit is due to our coach Mr. Kelly and his two assistants Mr. Halloran and Mr. O'Keefe who led the Spartans in their victorious debut season. Both Tom Eise and Mike Bow- man did a fine job as team co-captains, although Tom unfortunately was hurt early in the season and saw little action during the remainder of the scheduled games. Contributing much to the team's winning record was the Spartan offense, consisting of Joe Scanlon, Jim Huggins, Mike Bowman, Jim Houska, and Mike MacDonald. Holding the opposing teams to no more than one goal per game was the tight and rugged defense made up of Mark Vinciguerra, Tim Watters, Joe Murray, Steve Elliott, Tim Ryan, Frank Finnegan, Henry Autrey, and Mike Kelly who replaced Rick Meyer as goalie in mid-season and did an outstanding job. The Spartan kickers began the season with a smashing victory, rolling over the Chaminade Flyers, 6-1. Scoring in the game were Jim Huggins, Mike Bowman, Ray Gilliam, Tim Ryan, and Tim Travers. Tim, incidentally, had the distinction of scoring the first goal of the season. De Smet continued its winning way by beating Hanley Jr. High, 4--1 and running over Chaminade again in a 5-1 contest. It was in this game that Jim Huggins showed his scoring skill by heading in three goals, all off cor- ner kicks. After these three games Prep Seminary South handed the Spartan booters their first defeat. Prep South won the game 2-1. But hard-kicking De Smet quickly recovered from this defeat and clobbered St. Louis U. High, 4-1 in what was one of the highlights of the entire season. Ably assisted by his teammates, Joe Scanlon scored all four goals in this game, thus demon- strating once again the scoring ability of the club. In a return match with Prep Seminary South the Spartan footmen avenged their earlier defeat by trouncing their opponents, 3-1. The following game was with Rosary and despite a good show of spirited playing on the part of every man, De Smet lost this one, 3-0. The last game of the season was a real battle. Both the De Smet Spartans and the SLUH Jr. Bills fought hard on a rain-soaked field in Forest Park to win this important game. The rivals from Oakland Avenue managed to hold the Spartans to a 2-2 tie. A well deserved congratulation goes to our coaches Mr. Kelly, Mr. Hallor- an, and Mr. O'Keefe and to the skilled and dedicated players who made our first soccer season such an outstanding success. x w 1 N W E 1 a ga ..1.,' sf is 1 W.
