1981 BULLDOG DE SMET HIGH SCHOOL DE SMET, S. DAK. THE ROAD NOT TAKEN Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. 3 — Robert Erost Laura Timp Connie Jo Harris Jerry Wallin Kyle Lee Joni Zell Dan Currier Paula Smidt Tony Coughlin Sheila Coughlin Todd Cavanaugh Ryan Petersen Denise Widman W'r.sS ir s Evie Weerts Dick Carlson Darla Rydbom Pam Johnson Gutzmer Andy Larson Brenda Spader Rich Neu Susan Stewart Cathie McDonald Jill McFerran Lisa Maguire 9 Peggy Palmer Bryan Bronson Caryn Gehm Bob Garry Denise Doyle Margaret Johnson John Doyle Mike Albrecht Mitch Pratt Noel Martens Nancy Jones Mary Alice Mundhenke Brad Geyer Seniors Sheila Coughlin Tony Coughlin Dan Currier 9 11 Nancy Jones Norman Koehlmoos Steve Kretchmer Andy Larson Kyle Lee Noel Martens Cathie McDonald Jill McFerran 12 13 Darla Rydbom Paula Smidt Rita Siebelts Brenda Spader Susan Stewart 14 Jerome Wallin Denise Widman Joni Zell Evie Weerts 15 Senior class officers: Laura Timp, Pres.; Rich Neu, V. GRADUATION DAY Today we’ll start a new life And we’ll say our last goodbyes To all the friends we’ve grown to love With whom we’ve laughed and cried. Remembering the fun and laughter. The problems and the fears. And watching all our memories grow Throughout the high school years. The memories of the dances And the new friends that we’ve met. Vacations, teachers, talking And exams we’d rather forget. Yes, high school days are precious but brief Share all your dreams come true; It is not the end, but the beginning Of a life we’ll start anew. 16 Joyce Shefstad Graduates Graduation Day Senior Class Graduation Chorus 18 Bob Garry receives his diploma from Dr. Verlon Vallery “Out Here On My Own’’ Music written by Micheal Gore Lyrics written by Dean Pitchford Sometimes I wonder where I’ve been Who I am; do I fit in. Make believin’, is hard alone; Out here on my own. We’re always provin’ who we are Always reaching for that rising star. To guide me far, and shine me home. Out here on my own. When I’m down and feeling blue, I close my eyes so I can be with you. Oh, baby be strong for me; baby belong to me. Help me through; Help me need you. Until the mornin sun appears; Making light of all my fears. I dry the tears I’ve never shown. Out here on my own. When I’m down and feeling blue I close my eyes so I can be with you. Oh, baby be strong for me; baby belong to me. Help me through; help me need you. Sometimes I wonder where I’ve been. Who I am; do I fit in; I may not win. But I can’t be thrown Out here on my own. Out here on my own. 19 Football Football Players: Back row I to r-C. Sundberg, T. Martens, G. Cavanaugh, J. Gruenhagen, F. Timp, T. Coughlin, R. Zell, C. Anderson, B. Timp. She spoke about the customs, educa- tion, climate, animals, and homes of Indoneis. The fifth grade social studies classes studied the election process. Each child made a poster cam- paigning for a favorite presidential candidate. On Election Day, voting booths made of cardboard boxes, were set up and all fifth graders voted by secret ballot. The election results for the fifth grade were similar to national results. We had three parties this year, Halloween, Christ- mas, and Valentines. May first, the fifth graders went to the Good Sa- maritan Home and presented each resident with a May Basket made in art class and a cupcake. They sang two songs for the residents. The fifth grade social studies classes toured Pioneer Village in Madison on May 21. They had been studying about the pioneers and settlement of the United States. Matt Johnson and Gretchen Gross represented the fifth grade. Melinda Johnson was alternate. Our English classes wrote pen pal let- ters to fifth grade students in Salina, Kansas, who were interested in Laura Ingalls Wilder. We also wrote letters of recommendation for a US postage stamp in honor of Mrs. Wilder. We visited the De Smet Library to get some experience in using the card catologue. Career education is stressed in all classes and the importance of whole num- bers, fractions and decimals in math, parts of speech, good writing and speak- ing techniques in English and reading skills, poetry, weekly readers, and lis- tening in reading. It may be sixteen or seventeen years. Or may be one or two, But will you, till I call for him, Take care of him for me? I cannot promise he will stay Since all from earth return. But there are lessons taught down There, I want this child to learn. I've looked the wide world over For teachers kind and true, And from the throng that crowds Life's lanes, I have selected you. Now will you give him all your love, Nor think the labor vain, Nor hate me when I come. To call him back again? I fancy that I heard them say Dear Lord, Thy will be done. For all the joy will bring The risk of grief we'll run. We'll shelter him with tenderness, We'll love him while we may, And for the happiness we've known. Forever grateful stay. But should the angels call for him, Much sooner than we've planned. We'll brave the bitter grief that comes And try to understand. Edgar Guest (Adapted for the Bohns by Jerry Harmon) Dear student body, Shocked silence! For there are no words to express what was felt by the student body and faculty on Monday, January 26, 1981. Two victorious basketball games in Custer and Rapid City were over, but they were no longer signifi- cant. The dark pall of mourning and grief hung heavily in halls and classrooms. Tear-stained faces met the eyes of grief stricken teachers. Yes, Doug was gone. Death is not easy to accept at any age and silence seemed to be the only way to control the raw edges of sorrow. Carefully averting their eyes, students passed the empty desk in each class and numbly took their places. Yes, Doug was gone, but the joys they had shared with him pervaded the atmosphere. His love for golf and basketball-that finely-tuned sense of humor—the card games-passing the time at Ed's Standard-those trips to Milwaukee and Chicago with Dan, Bob, Mark, Fred and Randy, to New York with Randy, Jennie, Ron and Julie-his attempts at impersonations-singing with Todd in the locker rooms-the determination to have the last word (preferably a wise crack)-playing touch football in a motel hall-the State B's - Sincerely, Friends and faculty 3 Juniors Tim Aanenson Todd Albrecht Charles Anderson Douglas Bohn Terry Bronson Cheryl Brown Curt Buchanan Kevin Ganje Brenda Geiman Jeff Gilbertson Charles Gronewold Karmen Johnson Lyndon Johnson Dawn Klinkel Gretchen Knobloch Lonny Kruger Ann Long David McDonald Todd Monroe Dan Olson 74 One More Step!
